any color ideas for this beamed ceiling? pic included

when we moved in everything was orangish trim, very 60's I wanted a cleaner look and pale walls so I could accessorize as seasons change but I wasnt sure I should paint the beams in this family room (which is directly connected to a black and white kitchen with davenport tan and urban looking brick. The floors are dark hardwood. Anyway. I stained the beams really dark but frankly the ceilings just feel too high.
am thinking to gho a speck darker on the ceiling and do a semi gloss or satin on beams. the walls are Benjamin moore Dove wing and trim is white dove. We have pale oak in hallway and dining room Does anyone have a suggestion what to do with the ceiling and beams and what finish? My theme is basically black, white/creme, grays. Thanks for any help before I make my husband wreck his neck and back up there. :)

Maybe something a smidge darker, like BM Smokey Taupe?

I would not put a gloss on the beams. At most, a satin finish.

From what little I can see, I actually like the color. The room seems cheery and bright. Can you take a picture of the whole area?

What a cool idea! We installed a concrete sink in our bathroom, which I really like. Before we decided on the contour version, I was collecting pictures of concrete sinks and countertops with fossils and glass embedded in them. There are lots of companies out there that do this, so you might find someone with more experience. Pictures can be deceiving, but the ones below look like they are smoother than the sample you have. Finally, the architect who made our sink said that the concrete sink manufacturers willingly shared information about the process. So an alternative might be for your guy to talk with someone with more experience. Here are the examples, with the websites, plus our bath sink at the end. Wow! When we bought our house, we had a "problem room" that was long, narrow, and had built-in cabinets. Our rooms are very similar. Weird. The first thing we did was take out the cabinets. My husband used a crow bar and it took him only an hour. It opened up the room and let in tons more light. Then we installed some canned lighting in the ceiling where the cabinets were. Amazing difference. I had a hard time putting your pics together in my mind to create the whole room (not your problem, I'm horrible at that). I think you'd have a lot of luck "breaking up" that room, which is what we did. We used our largest couch as a divider, and it turned out really nice. It also made the space feel bigger, or at least we were getting more function out of the space we had. I'd be happy to send you pics if you're interested in seeing what I'm talking about. I'm also not very good at describing things. There really is a lot of potential there. Good luck to you!

Honestly, I think your house looks great. I wouldn't go overboard with accessorizing. I would suggest leaving the curtains up in the living room as they give some color and interest without being overbearing (the shears alone would make it a bit sterile). Put a nice simple print over the mantle. Wouldn't put anything else on the walls in the living room. Wonder if the upstairs hallway runner would be better served in the foyer. That space could use a larger rug and the hallway will be fine without one. Agree the foyer table should be dressed up more. The wall space above would be great with a small/medium sized decorative mirror and the table top could use a couple decorative items (maybe you have a couple of nice candlesticks for the table). OR, you could put an nice buffet lamp on the table and a greenery arrangement. For the second bedroom, take the desk out and move the bed away from the window (center it more on the wall). Third bedroom, either remove the curtains or change out the quilt to something solid. The patterns compete with each other (although each alone are very nice). You could change out the hardware on the cabinets, but I think buying some plush towels and a bath mat would be good enough. You can get everything you need at Walmart, Target or any store that sells home decor items. You have done a great job!! I would be thrilled to see your house if I were looking in your area.

Have you thought about dying the concrete a sandy color? I think gray could be beachy, too, but it's a thought. I think I'd skip the mosaic tiles and just continue your subways into the niche. I love the look of the seaglass in the jar. Your tiles already seem sea glass inspired, IMO. If you used the sea glass in the backsplash, how do you picture it? Surrounded by a square of mosaic tiles? Free form circle? Other? I'd try drawing it out or laying tiles out to get a really clear picture of your options. The above picture from houzz looks kind of like they filled a glass shadowbox with sea glass and then made a niche for it in the wall. I'm linking to a pintest page with seaglass. I second what Tibbrex says, Smokey Taupe would look great. I think with that tone you won't need to do anything to the beams.

I think it is lovely. No suggestions. I would relish in its beauty but I know how easily we tire of our own surroundings. I am sure whatever you choose it will be appropriately attractive.

We have beams similar to yours - painted our living room a grey, with beams a little darker grey, ceilings white in our 70's house. It lightened up the room, which we sorely needed. Yours are very pretty, though!

I think it looks great as is. However, I think if it were my house I'd leave the ceiling the same color as the walls and paint the beams a little darker variation of the walls/ceiling.

i do agree that the beams are very pretty dark, but our eyes directly go to the beams when we walk in and it makes the room seem less cozy to us. So at this point I wont make ceiling any different and will paint the beams only a satin of a slightly darker shade to see if that helps bring the ceiling down a bit. Hope so any other ideas still appreciated thanks so far! :)

If you paint the beams darker, you're going in the opposite direction of what you say you want. The darker the beams from the ceiling, the more stark the contrast, the more the eye is drawn upward, and the higher the ceiling seems.

If you want the ceiling to see lower, paint it a darker color and close the gap between the color of the beams and ceiling and have less contrast between the two.

I would try leaving the beams alone and painting the rest of the ceiling a darker color, maybe squirrel tail? (Benjamin Moore shows squirrel tail as a color that goes with dove wing). I think that would lessen the contrast between the beams and the ceiling so the beams don't stand out as much and help lower the ceiling visually.

I would really hesitate to paint the beams as they are so lovely as is and it would be very difficult to go back once you have painted them. I would make painting them a last resort.

I also feel they are too dark now , Tibbrix. I am sorry if i confused anyone Never wanted beams darker than they are now. I just wanted them darker than the walls
But maybe the idea of just darker paint on ceiling is the best. since once i would paint the beams it would be ridiculous to go back to stained. Thanks all. Now to just find a complimentary paint for the dove wing. Ill check the smokey taupe. And squirrel tale. :)
