SS sink reverberating in quartz countertop!

But not (as far as I know, I forgot to check?) when you put things IN the sink, it happens when I set ceramic dishes down on the COUNTERTOP.

Oy vey! I did not see that coming! I must say, though, that the sink is not fully installed, just resting in it's hole as a dry-fit by the installers.

Will this stop when the sink is all clipped down? Do I need vibration-absorbing somethings or others to stop this from happening? Surprisingly a Google search did not turn up anything useful.

It should be installed with a pure silicone sealant (bead of caulk, smoosh sink down onto it) under the rim; this will dampen vibrations. Do not let them use plumber's putty as it's greasy and will soak into stone.

Right now you have an unfinished setup, so the two hard surfaces are rattling against each other, minus the silicone rubber layer.

Okay, whew! DH said essentially the same thing, in addition to the fact that the sink is a wee bit snug ATM and snug stuff shivers more!

terry, do you mean LG Hi-Macs? Lomac is a drug. Hi-Macs is certainly comparable to Corian at a better price but it sure doesn't have more colors than Corian. Anyway, I'm sorry I can't help you with your sink concerns as I don't have a solid-surface counter. You may want to try searching "integrated sinks". One thing I know about SS sinks is that you need to run the hot water from the faucet before you pour hot liquids into the sink (like draining pasta) because the temperature shock can cause the sink to crack. Other than that, almost everything I've read about solid surface counters and integrated sinks is very positive. Nicole

Noting that we put in granite counters when we reno'd the kitchen, I still have to plug laminate. Our laminate was installed in 1971 and I'm pretty sure it was never actual Formica. It was white. Not only did we do lots of cooking and baking on it, we also used the peninsula for a myriad of arts and crafts projects. All the little dresses and shorts and quilts were made there. I clamped my wood carving project to the counter and chiseled away right there in the kitchen! After 40 years I had exactly 2 tiny chips in 47 sq. ft. of counter and no stains. A little 409 or whatever and a sponge took everything right out: red paint, cranberry juice, tumeric, anything. Right at the end we had a bit of de-lamination on the vertical piece right next to the stove. We also had a couple of edge chips from DW installation (the floor got higher over the years). On the day we ripped it out it was as pristinely white as it was when we moved in in 1974. Talk about a workhorse! We did put in granite and I love it, but I would have no problem installing laminate again. In your case because you have an entire tribe of kiddos who might not be as careful as your are, I would give it real consideration. Granite is good, quartz is good, but it's possible that laminate might be best in your case.

Thanks - and I was planning the white perimeter uppers and lowers with a darker quartz counter top ( i like the darker charcoal -matte finish- on top of the white cabinets)and the light gray island cabinet with marbled quartz top. I do love a dark gray cabinet but I have a small kitchen and worried it may be too dark. We are a family of 5 with three messy kids - although they are getting older and less messy lol. Ill have to look at the stained gray - i just dont like to see the grain of wood in cabinets. This island below has the pendants I will do (I'll do 2 smaller Hicks pendants). I like the look of this island and top and the white cabinets with dark quartz in lower pic what do you think?

Quartz countertops are basically inert, therefore incapable of soaking up anything from plumber's putty. This is not the case with natural stone. I'd use silicone.

Most importantly, the "teeth" on the sink clamps are not to dig directly into quartz. Have your installer hot melt/silicone 1/4" thick strips of wood to the bottom of the top for the teeth to dig into.

Make sure the cut-out has the minimum radii in the corners and while it doesn't have to be polished like an undermount cut-out, it certainly should have all the meanness knocked off the edges.

Thank you Trebuchet1 Since my contractor is me any specific details are much appreciated. I really should be solving my sink issues right now but I had to start i9nstalling fence in addition to my kitchen crap and I amj exhausted.

I said all that to say I have not even cracked open the 9nstallation 9nstructioons for the sink yet.

Oh, and if you have ideas for replacing former copper supply lines to the new faucet we are all thumbs....er, ears. I can share a pic if need be.

Okay, had to come back and re-read this after putting the clamps on the rail under the sink. I totally understand it now, and am glad I re-read. I did wonder how a toothed clamp was going to be stable on stone. I just so happened to pick up some 1/4" trim the other day, good timing!

I hope the silicone does not take long to set. My sink is ready to go in!

The silicone is applied as the sink is being set. As soon as the excess is cleaned up, the sink is ready for use.
