bluebirds!! The first ones ever on this farm. The other day I saw the mom and dad speed by as fast as a bird could go. I hope I didn't bother them with my lawn mowing. Finally today I opened both houses and one had blue eggs. The other one had the same kind of nest only it was empty.

Finally the blue birds beat those nasty sparrows to the house!! I feel like the bluebird of happiness, well sorta.

Doesn't take much for me these days. Grammyhoney will be so proud of me..lol!

Guess I need a lesson on Bluebird keeping.

Yes...what everybody said above. I have great luck with a fall garden and THEN a winter garden. The fall garden consists of pole snap beans planted in early to mid August (harvest until frost), summer squash planted in late July to early August, peppers planted in late June to early July, okra planted in early July, and this year I am going to try winter squash to be planted in late June or early July. I am still working on the right timing for fall tomatoes. I start collards, kale, cabbage,broccoli etc from seed in mid July for planting out in late August. These will all produce through the entire winter. (Broccoli side shoots, of course.) And then, I direct sow turnips, mustard, Asian greens, and carrots in late August. These also produce all winter. During the hottest part of the summer (July and August), plants will live as long as you water, but many of them will stop producing because the blooms fall off or fail to pollinate: tomatoes and beans being the biggest culprits. However, cowpeas,melons, okra, peppers, etc. do great during that time. We can grow and harvest food nearly year round here, but timing is absolutely crucial.

... All the time. I never seem to know when to stop, even with hubby calling out the door "Time to come in now". When it's hot I pin a pillow slip with crushed ice in it around my neck. When it gets dark I turn on the outside lights, but try to come in by 10 PM so the lights don't bother the neighbors. I'd rather be outside than inside any ole' day and gardening gives me an excuse to be there. Incidentally, for insect bites Bob happened to notice that HEB brand antibiotic ointment has a topical pain reliever in it so it stops the itch of mosquito bites very nicely. Maybe other brands have it too. Well, almost time to put the rolls in the oven. My computer is right next to the kitchen so it's easy to take a little rest from cooking in that chair :-) Wishing you all a blessed Easter Sunday ...

Update: Not the only problem (of course...). They fixed the two obvious areas where the wire was nicked. They turned the system on, but there are apparently a few other areas in between those two that are also problematic. So he needs another 2 repair kits. Of course, he doesn't come to work on this problem until the end of the day, so by the time he discovers he needs more repair kits, the store is long closed and I can't order them until the next day (today)! Luckily, they are letting us go down and pick up the repair kits from the warehouse, but the warehouse is an hour and a half away. I'm having my contractor go get them rather than driving down myself, but now feel helpless as I wonder if he's on his way yet or if he's stopping by his other job sites and won't get down there until this afternoon, or what?! So, hopefully he can fix the other broken sites this afternoon. Then they can reinstall the flooring tomorrow. Then cabinets can go in on Monday. I'm just really afraid that there are more breaks because they didn't cover the wires enough and they'll repair the pieces today and it still won't work, we'll have to rip out more floor, and we'll have to delay the cabinets, countertop, the entire kitchen for even longer. Please keep good thoughts that this all gets fixed today! K

Wow, what a great room. I love the hardwoods, wall color, window treatments and bed. I agree a rug would add interest and warm things up a bit and the taller lamp definately looks better. A chaise would be great by that big window, especially with a baby. Here are my 2 cents: Would you consider replacing the nightstands with bigger pieces? Small chests, old sewing machines, or washstands are readily available in our area on craigslsit for little money. Something a little wider, around 36" would be a better scale to the size of the room. Also, it's nice to have the large nightstands to place a lamp, book, eyeglasses, and a glass of water. I agree bigger pieces on the wall. How about several blown up photographs of the kids? If you could store the tv in the armoire, that would be great. Does your DH use a desktop or laptop. If it's a laptop, how about a secretary's desk. Again, those are readily available on craigslist-really nice pieces with leaded glass for $200. Like you have time to antique shop with 4 kids- congrats! We are just 7 months into our new build-it's definately a work in progress.

I feel you joy!! I've got Bluebirds for the 1st time too!!
And talk about aggresive..I've seen Momma whoop a squirrel (he hasn't been back) and several birds! lol

I too about choked I was like huh what...LOL love the title.....I have bluebirds that take a bath in my stream I am going to go out and try and get some pics...trying different sutter speeds etc. on my camera so probably won't post any but I love watching them take baths....Stacy

Since this came back to the top....
I took a peek today, eight days later and those eggs are big babies. I AM SO TICKLED! The mom and dad seem to be feeding those 5 chicks non stop. It won't be long and they will be flying the coop. I just hope my out door cats aren't looking.
I've lived in this house for close to 19 years and these are the only bluebirds I've ever seen in a box on our land.

We found a nest for something in one of rose bushes last night. Three babies just peeping away! They are right under my bedroom window so when I am off on Sunday I will see if I can watch for the parents. Glad all of my cats are indoor critters. I love baby birds!

Toni, it must be something in the air- in the 20 years we've been here this is our first year to have a nesting bluebird couple, too! Don't know how many babies they had, they fledged when we weren't looking, but mom and dad worked feverishly to feed them about every minute during the last couple of days. Woody would mow just to stir up the bugs!

Now I have a Carolina wren in my wall plant, she's sitting on eggies, too! I'm real careful watering it, only small bits of warm water...
