Majic Jack Plus phone service

Do any of you have this?
I ordered it and it came the other day.

We thought we had it all hooked up properly and when I make long distance calls they go through all right. However the number that is displayed on their identi call is not the number that they assigned me. It is another number which appears that imay be Majic Jack's number in Florida. It isn't even the same exchange number. When my friends dial that number, I recieve the call but if they dial the number I was assigned, it does not go through.

There is a 30 day trial period before they access my credit card for the paymenjt. I'm wondering if perhaps the number I was assigned will not show up for that 30 day period. Do any of you know?

I'm mainly interested in it in order to save long distance charges.

Did you contact them? If this is sold thru Radio Shack, did you contact them?

So far I did not find a way to contact them directly. I did not buy it from Radio Shack. I ordered it on line.

. where as the comcast rep I talked with told me a 911 call with their service is more direct to your local authority (if I have that correct). If the homeowner calls 911 on the phone, the call is routed to the appropriate local government emergency dispatch center. If you have telco POTS service, the routing is completely automatic. If you have any form of VoIP, you must make sure your VoIP provider knows what your residence address is. In the case of Comcast, they are both the VoIP and broadband provider, so they know where you are automatically. Then question then becomes, which is more reliable, the telco or Comcast. The telcos have been in the voice game far longer than Comcast and are very experienced with this sort of thing, having had a hand in the development of the 911 system. Comcast is new to voice and has little experience. Their voice calls are routed over the Internet, with contention and delay issues. The telco's voice calls are circuit switched over dedicated lines. They are much more reliable. Excepting sophisticated alarm services not routinely available to or used by the average homeowner, all the alarm monitoring companies do basically the same thing. Upon an alarm indication, they call the residence the alarm came from. If nobody answers, or if someone answers and gives a duress code or doesn't know the all-ok code word, the alarm company then calls the police at the customer provided regular police administrative number. They do not call 911.

"The original owners probably had cell phones instead of a landline, hence no jacks." They had cell phones in the 1890s? WOW! :-) Couple of points. Phone service was going on 20 years old when this home was built, so it's not at all unreasonable to install it, even if you're looking to preserve the character of the house. If you really want to preserve the character, get yourself an original or reproduction candlestick or other old phone. All homes should have at LEAST 1 corded, non-electrical dependent, phone. If you have kids and have a baby sitter in, are you going to leave him/her your cell phone, or hope that he has one? This is an issue because landline phones work with advanced 911 systems to display the address of the home automatically if there's an emergency. Cell phones don't do that. You can easily run the phone line into an area of the house where they're completely unobtrusive.

I guess it all depends on how much you call from home versus away from home or on the road. We use pre-paid cellular. The new phones were free after rebate and my wife and I each spend about $5-$7/month for the STI Mobile/Sprint service. We only make quick 1-2 minute calls for necessary reasons and it works fine anywhere in the country that Sprint covers. Voice mail and text messaging are turned off on both cellular phones. Other cellular providers are now joining the pre-paid game with good deals. We are still stuck with the old telephone company for home and home office lines. I must have the reliability and quality of a landline for my business. I do pay too much for long distance, toll-free, and local service for my business compared to the low rates available today. Bills are typically $35-$50/month for relatively low volume usage. The last time I switched was from MCI to Ameritech(i.e. SBC/AT&T/who knows?) It was a pain to switch, but the new lower rates were good for a year before they went up again. Our home phone line just went up to $22/month for local phone service. It started at $18 several years ago. Pre-paid long distance service is $.025/minute using cards from companies like Cheap Phonecards. The latest cards don't require you to enter the pin every time from home and you can program the 800 access number into speed dial. The long distance cards are great from hotels too. We are seriously considering the switch to broadband phone service, but our local numbers are not yet portable for Vonage or the others. We are just outside of their large markets. Broadband cable internet is $30/month and speed is around 300K or 10 times faster than dial-up. It is fast enough for our needs. Yes, the beeping is from someone calling you when you talking. (call waiting) Some times I get the sound like someone is pressing the buttons, could me my ear or theirs. I love my magic jack plus. Not the phone, I don't have one of those, I'm talking about the service itself.

I bought mine at Walmart...and love it! I can call local and long distance and talk to my heart's content for only $29.95 a YEAR! Several of my friends have bought one and love theirs also.

I think maybe we are getting it straightened out. I did finally get through to them and they certainly have tried everythihng. Apparently someplace some one mispelled my name and for some reason someone got the credit card mixed up. they had 2 different names and 2 different credit card numbers and codes. A real mess. They have cancelled everything and started over fresh to register. They'll send me an email to-morrow and hopefully it will be all straightened out. From the few calls I did make on it, l was well pleased so think it is good to be determined.

I've wondered about something like this, whether it was worth the hassle or not. I make few long distance calls so I just use the cell for those. But an extra number could be convenient for certain things. I take it you have to register a credit card or can you do an online payment or something?

It appears that it is going to be fine. The problem I had was that there was a wrong spelling of my surname. We eventually got it working by registering with the wrong spelling. Yes, you do have to give credit card info and they do not accept American Express. It will save me about $600. a year unless I get another land line and even then I will save, as I do have to make quite a few long distance calls.

If there hadn't been a problem, the registration was very simple and leads you through all the way.
