How Can I Keep Front Porch Rocking Chairs Clean?
Comments (1)You might try hosing them down in the morning. Painting might make them look cleaner, but when it comes to sitting on them they still have to be cleaned. I finally figured out fixing my deck up nicely was just adding another room which has to be cleaned. The only furniture I have on my deck now is one lounge with removable cushions. I keep the cushions just inside the patio door or in the deck box. When I hose down the deck I hose down the lounge frame. Comments (2)If the finish on the rocker is still smooth without a lot of peeling areas, then I personally would just lightly sand it and prime, then paint. I've painted 14 chairs, two night stands, and crackled one dining table and that procedure has worked for me every time. Don't have a digital camera so no pics. You just want to sand enough to "roughen" the existing finish. You could also wash it down with TSP, I think they still make it??, which essentially does the same thing. There is no reason to completely strip the finish off unless it is in really bad shape. I'd say start with 3 ought steel wool or medium grit sand paper. Then, depending, you can prime with Kilz which sticks to everything (brush it on). Or you could use a spray can primer and a spray can paint which is MUCH easier then painting with a brush. Chairs are a pain with a brush. Home Depot and Walmart both have a lovely selection of spray colors and finishes (some shiny some not). The only thing is if you wanted to do some designs or something, then you would have to buy oil based paint for that. You would not be able to use water based paint over the spray paint. Another option would be to rent or purchase a spray paint machine and use that for water based primers and paints... But, don't skip the primer!!...See MorePLEASE Tell Me How To Keep Front Porch Rockers Clean
Comments (3)I bought Martha Stewart Brown wicker look porch furniture. I think it is some type of resin. It still gets dusty, but doesn't show dirt. I wash it down every year, have had it out in partial sun 7 years and it still looks great. The cushions were the problem. I put the furniture out may-October and the cushion fabric faded terribly after about 5 years. I tried to find replacement cushions, but couldn't match the size/shape. Last year I had them redone by an upholsterer in outdoor fabric. Cost am almost as much as the whole set did when new, but I really love the way it looks. Hopefully the new fabric will wear better. Comments (32)That's good idea to consider a vinyl or poly product. I love the look of wood but probably wouldn't be so good about regular maintenance to keep them looking nice. Laughable - ouch re the bentwood rockers! I'll keep that in mind while shopping :) amck - beautiful water view! I don't think I'd ever want to leave your porch. I'm more of a water girl myself, originally coming from the gulf coast, but we had to sacrifice being close to a lake in order to get the amount of acreage the family would like for horses (DD) and privacy/outbuildings (DH). I'll be very happy with the view of our pastures and pond, but think I would be just as thrilled to live on a postage stamp size lot if I had an ocean view or a beautiful lake view like yours! Allison - acreage and a lake view? Sounds like heaven! Love your porch furniture - I could imagine spending all day on the swing bed :) Yours has always been my favorite GW home too. I'm so torn between decorating our new place in the warm, European cottage style similar to your home, which I love and is closer to the warm, rustic tones of our current home, or instead going towards the more crisp farmhouse style with the brighter whites, soapstone, and painted furniture, which might be more suited to our TN farmhouse with its white painted brick and black shutters. Maybe I'll find a way to harmoniously blend the two styles :)...See More2ajsmama
