hardie siding or just repair dry rot

olive

i have several places in the original wood siding that has dry rot and needs to be replaced before the house could be painted. but i was considering that if i need to hire a contractor to just remove the dry rot and replace with new wood siding....it might be better in the long run if i replace the dry rot and then cover with hardie siding. cost-wise would be a little more but more worry free in the long run. another option i am consider is whether painters could fix the dry rot problem for me and then paint without my having to hire extra contractors. what is better??
