Chapter books for kids, suggestions

DGD just turned 6 and loves to read. She is reading on at least 2nd grade level. Any suggestions? She loves the Magic Bus books. She likes books with adventures. I don't remember the book she was reading but she hated it. It had to do with someone at school. I guess she can't relate since she is home schooled. I don't even know what books kids read now. At her age all we got was Dick and Jane. UGH! I thought I'd look at the thrift stores and load her up on books if I just knew what was appropriate.

Before checking at thrift stores, check places like Target and Kmart first to see what is avaiable. Also ask your friends with children these ages Look at consignment stores and good used book stores. I personally am leary of buying children's books at most thrift shops as I really know who has had them. Also sometimes libraries have books for sale.

My kids liked the "Goosebumps" books. It wasn't long before my youngest was reading the Harry Potter books all by herself. She even used her own money to buy her first Harry Potter book!

My Ds might be the same way (he's only 10, so no parking tickets yet, but forgetting his lunchbox or his homework at school - though never a book!). He is continually reading - even if we're going somewhere - we were taking the kids to a 6pm show at the circus 35-40 minutes away and he had to take a book in the car! I don't know how he can read in the car - I always got motion sickness when I tried. I think he stays up late at night reading and that's why he's so tired in the AM - send him to bed b/t 8:30-9pm, get him up at 7, and he's dragging. When he was about 4 (in preschool, but I forget whether it was PS1 or PS2 - he went for 2 yrs) he explained to his teacher how cell phones worked - he had seen the towers, asked about the antennas, and so I told him the basics. She was impressed - but that's what you get when you have an engineer and a computer geek for parents! He was always asking questions. Now of course he thinks Mom's the dumbest person on earth, always wants Dad to help him with homework - I had to convince him the other night that I really did know how to add fractions! Though by the time he gets to calculus I might need to brush up. DD is just more interested in animals and flowers than technology - and I'm not good at biology/botany so I have a hard time answering her questions.

skatiero, that sounds really great. I wonder if I can find one. I'll have to measure the interior, and write it down on a card to tuck into my wallet. If nothing else, it would mean you could lift off the front row very easily. My mom found that a wooden CD crate holds her paperbacks perfectly, so she puts the front row in them. Then she can pick it up all at once. Of course, paperbacks are a uniform size (mostly--with a couple of variations). Kids' books are all over the place. Once kids get a BIT older, their books become *more* uniform in size, but these are the pre-third-grade books, so they're all over the place. My DH does this: He lays the front row on its side, and he lets it only go about halfway up. Then you can see the books in the back, and it's easy to pick up the single stack in front of whichever book it is you want to read.

books to be read to - I do not have much experience with this, but I know when I read to my friends three year old, he seems to enjoy interactive books and books that he has to find/do things in. But I would think for the little older to be read to's Shel Silversteins poetry collections Where the Side walk Ends and A light in the Attic - the funny poems and illustrations appealed to me at that age (lol and still to this day) books for young readers (6-10 ish) - Ramona Series by Beverly Cleary. These are wonderful books! The next two were harder, as I tried to base them on more modern books. I ended up picking the two that were my nephews favorites that we read and discussed when he was that age. He didnt enjoy reading, but read these two several times. books for young teens - The Thief of Always by Clive Barker. This is a great book for kids who like the horror genre, but arent ready for Stephen King :) I believe the reading age is 10 and up, and I believe we read this when he was around 12. A wonderful story about a boy that is bored with his life and ends up at Mr. Hoods Holiday House, where all the seasons pass in a day and you can do and have everything your heart desires - for a price. books for older teens, young adults - Miracle's Boys by Jacqueline Woodson. This is an amazing book for people of all ages, although it is geared specifically towards YA. It is a great story about the struggles a young man must face with his brothers after his mother dies. Wanted to put a Jack London book on here, but was not sure if that would be considered a childrens book, even though I read it when I was quite young (10 or 12 I think)

Perfect example of the art and frustrations of parsing kids' taste in literature. Oddly, I remember being "forced" to read some books in third grade for a book report, and I really didn't want to. They were biographies and I couldn't imagine how Ralph Bunche and Galileo could have had interesting lives, (I know!). I learned the lesson of stretching myself when it came to reading, and picking "outside the box" books and giving them a chance. Also not judging a book by its cover, since Ralph Bunche in a grey suit didn't convey the amazing achievements of the man, and nothing says, "dead boring old guy" like a painting of Galileo. I became a fan of both men though, after reading the books. I scratch my head when I think of some of my choices back then, I was all over the board. Still am I guess.

Just another thought, my DD hardly ever buys a book, because they go to the library all the time. With summer coming up, check to see if they have some children's programs. My GD's love them.

Checking with your local public library is a WONDERFUL suggestion. My two girls joined their summer reading program, and as a reward, they were allowed to stay in the library overnight at a sleepover party at the library. They still remember it, more than 15 years later!

My DS is in 2nd grade and he LOVES "Junie. B. Jones" books. He started reading them in Kindergarten and just loves them, I'm sure she will too, they are pretty cute!

Oh sososososo many choices! DD's (8 yrs. old, 2nd grade) fav's are:

Harry Potter (book series)
Magic Treehouse (book series)
Warriors (book series)

My DD loved Magic Treehouse at that age too. Just a bit more advanced (and a lot funnier to adult sensibilities, lol) is the "Hank the Cowdog" series.

I feel the same as Marie about kids' books from thrift shops. Children's actions are not always the most sanitary....

I like to buy children's books at Book Closeouts I usually get them for $1 - $2 apiece, brand new.

I can't imagine a book from a thrift store is any worse than a book from a library.

Anyway, how about some oldies like the Little House on the Prairie series or Pippi Longstocking?

Thanks for the suggestions. I just talked to DD and she said Junie B Moon was the one DGD hated.

Casey, you beat me too it. I was about to say the same thing about library books. The ones at the thrift store are probably read by a family not hundreds of kids.

I'll look for some of the ones suggested.

Beverly Cleary books. She wrote many books for that age. My kids loved them even though they were born a couple of decades later.

don't forget some of the classics...anne of green gables series, and bit harder secret garden...
