Thanks for Kelly's article...I had not seen that one. That article will do just fine. The other one I remember was not really an article...it was a website that sold stainless steel sinks and they had an article about the evolution of sinks and why single bowls are better. hmmm. But thanks again for Kelly's article...it's great.

At one point, I felt the same as your clients but I've now come over to the single bowl camp. One of the things that swayed me was the realization that my large fry pans would be able to sit flat in a single bowl sink because there wouldn't be a divider in the way. Another was the aha moment I had that I could use a dish pan inside my single bowl sink for the rare times I needed a double bowl function - for instance, hand washing heirloom china that I'm too chicken to put in the DW.

I am not planning to add a prep sink to my kitchen so I'm considering sinks that will work with grids, baskets and such. In other words, I'm hoping to find a multi-purpose single bowl sink. In white. Not an easy task but oh, well.

I think I saw that! If it's the one I'm thinking about, it was published about six years ago (yes, time flies) in Kitchen & Bath Desing News. I know you know that trade pub, since I sometimes see you quoted in there ;-) It was such a persuasive case that I decided to try a big single, and I've LOVED it!

Actually, my client's husband (whom I spoke with maybe once) just found out they're getting a 27" wide single bowl sink. He called me and was pretty mad about it and said it was unacceptable. All quotes, invoice, renderings and layouts stated a single bowl sink. There's no room for a double now. I tried to convince him how much he will love it. I hope he does and I get paid!

ps. They're getting a 27" wide stainless steel.

Kompy, I just thought I would mention I am one that switched from a 60/40 to a large single and I don't like it. I am always washing out the sink for veggies. We do a lot of greens like kale etc and they need a sink of water.

Went from a double to a single, and will never go back to double! It's my unexpected favorite part of my kitchen. I know the topic of single vs. double sink has been discussed a lot on this forum, but I can say that my DH (like your client's) was against single, and now wouldn't go back to double. Also, he realizes that the drain is much clearer, cause there's only one drain, and it has a disposal. Vs. before, when there were two drains, one didn't have a disposal, and so stuff went down that drain and clogged, or there was a gross soggy drain basket to dump to the other side and clean. No more of that!

P.S. in response to Eandhl's post, I realize people operate differently in the kitchen, but what we do is either rinse fruits/veggies under running water, or fill a bowl with water and swish the veggies around. Easy peasy.

Kompy,I'm trying to make the same decision and have been considering a double with low divide. The options are fewer though. Has you considered that?

If he's not instantly persuaded, buy him a nice stainless dishpan to fit half the sink and ask for your check. :)

Mildly off topic but: I actually designed a corner sink similar to the one the Rachiele company produces. I sketched it out and then assumed SOMEONE must be making it so I went looking for it. They had the closest one I was ever able to find.

In the end, I had my sink custom made but I must admit in the process got totally bugged by that company. It feels like everything they write is snarky and condescending with this linked article being no different. I wouldn't show that to a client who wanted a double bowl sink. As a client I wouldn't appreciate being called stupid. (And that particular article managed to hit me on counter height, cars, double bowl sinks, how I wash my dishes...)

I opted for a single bowl instead of a double after a lot of discussion with my husband. And it's true that it's great for bigg things but awkward in some other ways.

kompy, I think a 27" wide sink is huge. "Plenty" big.
I'm sure a low divide would work too.
Franke tech support told me that the would make for me any shape I want.
Take one of their sinks and modify it.

I can hardly wait to get a single...

morgne, the thread is about single / double sinks so I'll keep it real short; send me an email and I'll respond within a couple days. In general I say stuff meant to be constructive (informative, reassuring, positive, concurring, etc) except when I'm clearly not that (i don't engage in oblique negatives). So if you're not sure what something means, remember that it's a positive.

I have ordered a standard double bowl--maybe a mistake, but that's what I'm used to. Like the author of the first article above, I do handwashing of stuff that doesn't go into dishwasher, including china and crystal and things with touchy finishes. I hand wash a number of kitchen tools and things that cannot wait until the dishwasher is run. Also, I process garden veg by moving things from soak side to prep side of sink. My habits are of long standing.

But...I also ordered a standard single bowl for my new "prep" sink, which I hope will allow awkward cooking items too. My criterion was that it be able to hold a good-sized pumpkin.
