Ya gotta love a gardener!

GD, 3 1/2 yo, and I spent hours today, planting starters in "her" container gardens. It got hot and we got sweaty and dirty.

We took a break to come in for some air conditioning, some ice water and 'toons, snuggled up on the couch. I told her that I think we probably stink.

"No, Nana, you smell good. You smell like dirt." LOL LOL I don't think I've ever had anything nicer told to me.

The gardening lesson went well. Next lesson....you don't need to pick up the newly planted flowers by their little neck, out of the soil, to smell them.

One day I went to work Monday after gardening all weekend, with dirt under my fingernails. My co-worker noticed and said "You have gardener's hands." Such a nice compliment!

Lantana are one of my favorites both for the sheer mass of blooms and the fact that the gophers leave them alone. I tuck them in everywhere; around roses and leggy shrubs, over open areas that are hot and dry and basically neglected, and they thrive. I just planted a good sized bed of them around the bottle trees that I expect will come into their full glory next year. (IOW, 3 to 4 feet and blooming like there's no tomorrow) I have the solid white, white/yellow center, pink/yellow (reminds me of a birthday party), red/orange (Dallas red), solid orange, pure gold and a bright, lemony yellow without the orange undertones. I also have another variety called "Lucky Peach", which is a dark peachy pink with a yellow center. They're such happy volunteers that I don't see how you can prevent Lantana drupes from sprouting. Seedlings can always be transplanted to other, less colorful corners of the yard, but never near walkways as they do have that slight prickly/thorny habit that can scratch the unwary. I've successfully moved a 3 foot tall blooming plant in July; yes, it wilted something awful, but I kept it watered well and within 4 weeks it was blooming again. Lantana is one tough cookie.

I began putting corn cobs out for the squirrels in my backyard a few years ago. They will take the cobs and strip them of kernels and run around the property burying them in flowerbeds and the lawn for winter feed. Lo and behold, in the spring, we have corn coming up in our flowerbeds, vegetable garden and lawn! I've never planted corn because it's notoriously difficult to grow in our local backyard gardens. But the squirrels are obviously excellent farmers! We always let several stalks grow to full size for decoration and humor. We address the squirrel/bird feeder problem by just keeping a lot of feeders full. They seem to work it out as to who gets filled. If the squirrels are raiding the feeders for sunflower seeds, then the doves are hanging out below to catch all the seeds that fall onto the ground. Always a good show!

LOL Jannie.

I have natural, long fingernails - not like I can pop them off and start over. If I wear gloves, they can last through the "planting season". I try, really hard, to keep them short and clean.

Scrubbing away on the nails one day, my then 6 yo son told me, "God made dirt and dirt don't hurt."

That is a great memory you created, Roco! I too have natural nails, and I get manicures every 2 weeks. Last time I told Debbie it was time for my spring pruning....she laughed and said "Tis the season", she's been doing my nails for 20 years, I guess she knows me!

My 2 year old grandson was helping me plant annuals. He was to hand them to me to plant. After a while I thought, I don't remember buying this many plants. I looked back and he was pulling them up for me to plant again!!! It's funny now but it sure wasn't then.

I know you enjoyed your dirt digging with the little one.

My old dog used to watch me plant annuals in spring, then he'd dig them all up. My current dog is a female and watches me plant but leaves them alone. She does drink out of my fishpond.

Lots o' seeds.

Lots o' dirt.

No ready-made plants (well, only a few onions).

No grandkids to "help".

Actually ... I should be out there, right now ...

... lots! yet to do ...

... not playing on the computer, here at the church (after the old guys' coffee hour).

And during the hoeing, staking, stringing lines, running the cuts and dropping in the seeds (or pushing them down into the dirt) ...

... then watering ...

... I found out that I have a lot more muscles than I'd thought ...

... that I get tired with all of that exercise ...

... and that I'm getting old!

My granddaughter used to spend a lot of time with me in my yard and garden, once when visiting ( she was about age 4) she was given a cookie and went out into the yard, I looked up to see her crumbling her cookies into my flower bed,when I asked her why.. she replied..oh I am just feeding the flowers so they will grow..
