WM Taylor bench or something similar

Hi All,

We have an off-to-the-side space in our dining area in our open concept house. It's not huge, it's probably not even technically a "space", but I want to do something with it.

I'd love a comfy place right by the big windows to stretch out with my coffee and a book. Or to have a place for sick kiddos to lounge and watch TV when they are home from school (the only other TV in the house is in the family room downstairs and that's a pain since my kids are little).

The overall space is 10' x 13' with a 55" round expandable table in the center. One side of the room leads outside and the other side is where I want a lounge space. The lounge space is about 2' x 6'.

I found a bench at WM that is the perfect dimensions, but I'm not sure about it. Anyone have experience with WM furniture? Or is there another bench/chaise/settee that you can recommend that would be about that size?

I guess another option would be to get a dining bench that could be used at the table as well as for lounging.

Here is a picture of the space. I've since taken up the rug and purchased a round table, which I love! The lounging spot would go where the plants are on the left.

Not sure that I would purchase a bench unless I could sit on it - and perhaps have kids lay down on it if that is going to be part of the use.

I think having the space is a nice idea. Now that you have a round table, would a bench really work with that for seating (or do you have leaves so that the table becomes an oval?).

Have you considered a chaise instead?

Yeah, you're right about testing them out first. Now I just have to get a free day to make the six hour round trip to the nearest WM. Maybe I need to look somewhere closer. :)

I currently use a 48" bench on one side of the table. It works great for two people when we need the seating. And the table does expand to an oval.

Wall to edge of table is 54". That would fit a narrow bench or chaise, and a chair at the table.

And yes, I have considered a chaise. I'd actually prefer that, but I can't find anything that is narrow enough. Any ideas?

Current pics of space. Sorry the lighting is bad, it's so bright in there that it's hard to get a decent pic. (We are also going to be painting the trim white when we replace the windows, and I'm looking for new curtains. The rug on the right will be moved outside on the deck when that gets built.)

Florantha, I think the word you're looking for is "fretwork." I had list similar to yours. I think there is definitely some whimsy in Hollywood Regency, especially in its later incarnations. I think there was a desire to evoke the luxury of exotic locations. It comes through in the chinoiserie, but also I also saw a lot of palm motifs (which I guess could just be Southern California, but has an exotic feel), and I found a banana motif chandy. Then there's the animal prints and animal images. A bit whimsical but also exotic and luxurious.

Mat, yeah I have 2018 and 2019 to write up. I have all my notes. Just have to find time. I checked out Pepiniere casse noisette website. They do not list their rootstocks anywhere that I can find. What rootstocks are your pears, peaches, apricots on? Honestly, a lot of what they are selling, at least in apricots, peach, nectarines seem to me to be VERY marginal for their climate. In many case they mention useful for growing in pots but if that is the case how are they propagating for sale? I don't want to disparage them without information but my impression is they might be reselling . You absolutely need to be buying based upon root-stock. For apples I am not only buying on Bud118 as it has best cold hardiness and is vigorus for our short seasons - Bud9 is just too slow. Train and prune to keep the size you want. Pears on OHxF87 or 97 and prune/train. I have found PAW-PAWs to be marginal in 4b - still 3' tall after 5+ years. Blueberries don't like my soil so Haskasps and Currants are much better. You have better options than Indigo Gem, Aurora is good though. Pink Lemonade is like a zone 5/6 plant, I see little chance of it surviving. Both Whiffletree and vigneschezsoi are good options. Be aware that a 1-2 year old bare root grape vine will bear fruit 1-2 years faster than the same year rooted cuttings you will get from vigneschezsoi. If you are only buying a couple might want to spend a couple extra $$ to get fruit a whole year or 2 earlier. Somerset and Trolhaugen are good. Had a couple Brianna this year, not enough to really say. Get Bluebell as well. I suggest 10-15' between vines. Can go closer but I am of the hack back 90% every year and then let grow. Trollhaugen can put out 12-15' of growth in 1 year alone - plant closer and you have to keep on top of canopy thinning to avoid overgrowth. Apples and pears will benefit from bagging with ziplocs. Grapes I bag with Organza bags when starting to turn color. So far I am loosing 99% of stone fruit (plums) to plum curlico and the rest to birds/racoons (can't bag plums - they rot). All peaches die. Trying apricots but no fruit yet. Don't get too caught up on types of fruit. Buy something disease resistant on a hardy, vigorus rootstock then topwork as you get enough branch structure. You will then be able to test fruit to see what you like or not within 3 years of grafting. My crabapple is now up to 65+ different apples grafted to it.

Well, my experience going up to my wedding site this weekend taught me a few things. It was in the 90's and I wore a short sleeved polyester dress. I've decided to eschew as much polyester as possible, it just doesn't breathe as well and doesn't feel great against my skin. Anything fitted and polyester is out, as well as any type of poly lace against my skin. I am going to try and stick with cotton, rayon or linen or a blend at least, and find something that can be joined with some kind of jacket or shrug or what not if it is cooler. Not even 3/4 sleeves for the actual dress. I also realized I do want something in a light color and lacy at least in some ways, something that does say "wedding" so the darker colors are out. A pale floral mix might not be too bad. I have tried on literally over a dozen dresses, and when doing that online, is kind of a pain with all the returns. It seems like what I want shouldn't be that difficult to find, something nice but practical, natural fibers, light color. But when I do find it, my size is usually sold out, and even one size up. I am size 12, the most common one. Maybe I will have to go with custom made, or "bespoke" as they say in Great Britain.

@Diana Bier I actually do have another sofa in the room. It's a big living/family room and the long arm of the sectional is across the room from an 80" 3 seat leather sofa. The TV is positioned across from the short arm of the sectional. When we are using the room socially, we really like being able to have the two pieces across from one another for conversation. When we are watching the TV the shorter arm of the sectional is great for upright viewing of the TV or we will lay down on either end of the sectional. For us this layout is functioning great and the reason for purchasing a new sectional is that the one we have now has completely worn out. Suspected broken springs and the cushions are compacted and the down encasement has ripped open and is shedding feathers like I have flock of geese in my house. This is the room layout: "Family Room". The countertop does not jut into the family room as it appears. It is flush with the 5ft wall on the left. 190" from Kitchen wall to Master wall (left to right). 235" from top window wall to "Living" wall (which is actually a Dining room). For the actual useable room space, need to subtract 40" for that walkway where it says "smoke alarm" on the bottom end of the Family Room and about 20" to account for the curve in the windows, so this is really more like 175" in usable space. TLDR: 190" (left to right) x 175" (top to bottom) of usable space The TV is mounted on the right wall shared with the Master. There is a sofa that I will not be replacing (because it's a wonderful Hancock & Moore leather sofa) in the curved bay window. The sectional is floated across from the bay window to form a conversation space with the sofa and still have an arm for viewing the TV directly. @Jan Moyer it is a challenge knowing whether the sales person / designer is knowledgeable and helpful or not. That's exactly why I am here trying to learn more. I think intuitively we think that a firm foam cushion would be more durable than a softer foam cushion, but you (and several of the most helpful sales people) have recommended the spring/down blend cushion upgrades for durability in a highly used space, so that is what I am planning to do. If anyone has opinions on King Hickory (in contrast to Taylor King), that would be very welcome to hear. Comparatively the pricing is significantly better on King Hickory, but I've heard more about Taylor King. Thanks!

What about having a small banquette built? Not sure if you've placed your light yet..it might involve moving the table to do this.

Thanks, yayagal. I like the armed ones, but I'm afraid 32 inches would still be too wide. Hmmmm...

olychick, I have thought of that idea too and I really like it. The one thing is that the table wouldn't be centered in the room or the windows, but off to one side. Do you think that would look strange? When the table is extended it would be centered though.

And where would I place the lighting? Centered in the room or over the table or ?? Right now it's not centered on anything anywhere, it's like they just picked a spot at random.

I think it would look terrific in your space and really warm/cozy it up - not odd at all to have it to one end of the space. It would be very kid friendly...you could have TWO sick youngsters in the space. You could do toy (or other) storage in the bases. You could even extend the bench on the long wall closer to the door for more seating in the area and to pull the space all together.

I think I would center the light over the table when it's round and not worry when it's extended - I assume the round is the primary use? You wouldn't want to worry about bumping your head if you centered it in the room but had the table to one end. Or do two smaller light fixtures, one centered over the table and another further toward the door..not low hanging chandeliers but maybe semi-flush? Not necessarily these...but maybe something that hangs like this?
