Bill Vincent question

Thank you for all the advice you have given others and I have read closely. Now it's my turn: I love the look of painted tiles - especially Spanish-style designs of blue and yellow -- to use as a backsplash. Are these totally out of style? My new kitchen has white Brookhaven cabinets, Corain countertop in flint, s/s appliances. and a terra cotta floor. What do you recommend?

I know this is a Bill V question but just wanted to jump in and say that I just recently saw those exact tiles used in a kitchen in one of the au courant kitchen magazines. I especially remember that photo of Spanish tiles in blue & yellow because a friend of mine decided to bring those back on a trip to Spain a few years ago. They were beautiful. I think regardless of whether they are in style, if you love them, go for it. I think they would add a lovely interesting touch.

Mary, don't worry about what's in or out, if it's something you really love. Those painted Spanish and Italian tiles really are impressive, and especially with the terracotta floor, would go well.

Well, you could try a steak knife.... :-) (just kidding-- For some reason, Ron White comes to mind!) Either with a wet saw or a score and snap cutter, if you have one.

I'm not bill_v, but we are using Laticrete Silver Shadow based on his recommendations several times in other people's posts on this forum. It is pretty similar to Mapei Warm Gray, I think, but I didn't compare them side by side. I know Bill has a few posts with example pictures of the Silver Shadow that you might be able to use as a guide.

Bill, Thanks for the advice. Very useful as always. Regarding thinsetting the Durock down, the Thermalboard instructions say not to thinset directly to the board because the aluminum coating will not provide a good bond. They were referring to thinsetting the tile I believe and not the backer board. What are my potential problems if we do not thinset the backerboard down? Thinsetting and then screwing I think it going to make it more likely that someone puts a screw through the pex tubing. Thanks again, Martin

Hi Maria-- That sounds to me like a standard modified thinset. Although it COULD be used, I'll tell you right now-- using the 255 would be alot easier, especially for someone DIYing it. It's more expensive, but worth the money.
