please help - choice of sink for 30' cabinet...

Hi, we have committed to a 30" cabinet and want to get the biggest single bowl we can...

We are between three choices, each with their own advantages...

1) Blanco 441024 SS Plus: largest area: 26" widex16" front to back, 9" deep. cons: we prefer the composite materials - mostly b/c they are supposed to be quieter.

2) Blanco 440176 Diamond Single Bowl undermount 22"widex18-1/2 front to back, 10" deep. pros: largest volume, in silgranite. cons: I'm not sure about the slight "d" shape - I think the faucet will need to be offset.

3) Elkay E-Granite Gourmet Single Bowl sink, 22-3/8" wide x 16-3/8 front to back, , 9-1/2" deep. pros: composite material, like the squareish design, depth seems perfect. cons: smallest volume, concern about keeping white (my preferred color) clean.

Any help greatly appreciated!! Contractor and KD waiting somewhat impatiently for our final answer...

Hi Mabies,
We have a 30" base cabinet and a Julien 28" x 16" x 8" undermount sink. The corners are 18mm which is a beautiful radius--easy to clean, but still clean and contemporary looking. It is mounted directly to the soapstone counter without clips. One side actually rests right on the edge of the cabinet, because we have it just slightly off-center to better align it to the window. We are very pleased with our choice. I know many people love a deep sink, but after accounting for the countertop, our 8" sink was over 9" deep and it became uncomfortable to reach to the bottom. We purchased the Julien sink grid after the fact, which helps a little.

With a "D" sink, you often get more depth (front-to-back) than with a traditional rectangular sink. Yes, if you have standard depth counters you probably will have to mount the faucet off to the side (on the curve, probably). However, this has two advantages (speaking of "D" shapes in general):

(1) Gives you a larger volume sink compared to a traditional rectangular sink of the same width

(2) Brings the faucet closer to you so you don't have to reach as far to get to it...especially helpful if you are short or have short arms.

I would keep looking until you find a sink you like in your preferred composition and color. BTW...the exterior dimensions are useful for determining whether the sink will fit in your sink base (recommended 1" or more less than the width of your sink base). The internal dimensions tell you how much sink workspace/volume it has.

As Sandn mentioned, keep in mind that the final working depth (top-to-bottom) of an undermount sink is equal to the depth of the sink + the thickness of your countertop.

A 30" cabinet only fits a standard 25" single bowl sink. There are a few sinks that have come out recently that will work in a 30" cabinet, but they are all single bowl as well. The largest sink that you can have with a 30" cabinet is a 27" sink. You HAVE to leave room to attach the sink properly. Yes, some people crowd a too large sink in by cutting away the walls of the cabinet, and some of those don't even have problems with that. Some do, as their cabinets aren't robust enough to carve away their support and still handle a heavy sink full of heavy water for decades. And some people have damaged sinks and then find it's impossible to replace the sink if they've scooped the sides without either pulling the counter or completely destroying the sink base from the inside out and then reconstructing it. You don't have room for what you want. Settle for what's available. It will actually work better than what you want.

Blanco has a couple of great silgranit sinks with offset drains. One is offset to the middle back, and one is offset to the corner in back. I love silgranit sinks. They never get water spots like stainless. They are quieter than stainless. They don't scratch like cast iron. Do a search at the bottom of the page for granite sinks, or silgranite, or silgranit. They are really fab! Oh, and pretty too with several colors available. The one I'm planning is the Precis with the middle back drain. It has a quilted bottom so water drains easier. I can't remember the name of the other, but if you go to faucet direct.com and use their filter search you should find them both.

We just put in a 30" Sink Base - We bought a 30" Kraus KHU100-30 Sink. We thought we would have to cut the sides of the base cabinet down, but it slides just inside our cabinet - A perfect fit...no trimming

I like Davidro1's answer, which I'm paraphrasing as: "yes it will fit, cabinet flanges will have to rest on sides, but it's not a deal breaker. Yes, if you were ever forced to replace your stainless steel sink in the future, that would be difficult, but that's unlikely." If I'm missing bigger problems with this plan, help me understand what I'm missing. Let me clarify my current situation: -We will be gutting current kitchen and will start fresh with all new cabinets, sink and counter. -I haven't bought or ordered anything yet. -I'm assuming that the interior width of a standard 30" sink cabinet should be around 29". I understand I will have to confirm that assumption with KD. -Exterior Width of the sink bowls for the stainless sink I found = 27.5" -29" interior cabinet width minus 27.5" sink bowl width = 1.5 of clearance between outside of sink bowls and the cabinet sides. -Yes, the sink width with flanges is 29.5, but each stainless flange should be approx 1" deep and those flanges can rest on top of the cabinet sides. If the other info I've read is correct, undermount stainless sinks are typically installed to granite counters by gluing them to the granite counter. If the sink is glued to the counter first, then it will drop right into the cabinet. Yes, if I ever needed to replace the sink in the future after we rebuild the kitchen, it would be difficult to do that after the counter was installed, but the odds that I would be forced to replace a stainless sink are fairly low. Again, if I'm missing something, please help me get it.
