Happy craigslist story :)

It's nothing earth-shattering, just a little antidote to the creepy stories we hear so often...

I've had some beautiful vintage stools (clean-lined wrought iron with wicker seats--very minimalist and wonderful but we just didn't have a place for them anymore) up on craigslist for a few weeks, and someone wrote tonight and said she would send her fiance to pick them up this evening with full price cash.

O.K., that's fine, I'm home alone but I'm tough.

So he gets here and he is such a dear heart--starts telling me about his fiancee and that he has moved all her things up from another state and he's so tired and the wedding is soon and about her family and his family's backgrounds and so on and so on--so clearly excited about the future. I am *so glad* they'll be the ones to have the stools, as at least his fiancee seems to "get" them (he said "I'm just following orders--she said to get them so I've come to get them" so I don't know if he necessarily shares her aesthetic sensibility :)), and the price was more than fair--I feel like I got to give a very sweet young couple a wedding present of some great design.

So craigslist isn't all nutcases and noshows :)

just realized: I guess this is an antidote anecdote :)
(I also just realized I am a little heavy on the smiley faces -- being around a happy young fiance will do that to someone, even someone whose back and hips are killing her :))

fly, that's too cute! And guess what, I love your happyfaces and your humour too. Antidote Anectdote hahahah!

It's so nice to see young men especially that are in love, seems they are so often low key about the lovey dovey stuff anymore.

Jackie, Soil steaming is done by using special equipment, a bit like the steam cleaners used for household cleaning but larger. Has to be done by professionals. Soil solarization is done by covering damp soil for an extended period (1 to 3 months) with transparent polyethelene sheets. Again if you want to go that way you should seek local expert advice. Both techniques increase soil temperature enough to sterilize it to adequate depth. The particular bacterium is killed if exposed to a temp of approx 60C/140F for an hour. One can lower this time by using a higher temp or deploy a somewhat lower temp and increase the exposure time. You get the additional benefit of getting rid of weeds for a period. Both these methods are commonly used in commercial cultivation, usually under glass. PS. For a limited area boiled water might do the trick. But I don't know it for a fact and I can't find references. You will need to maintain the heat for some time. Check with a local expert. PS2. All above methods will destroy the roots of plants so if other plants are nearby, much thought must be given before deploying them. Again, seek the advice of a local expert. PS3 People have been known to use charcoal fire heat for soil sterilization. The problem with this is that the intense heat may have permanent effects on soil chemical composition plus the heat might not reach adequate depth. Not recommended. Thanks......All of YOU! My 'Walking/Talking' friends may never quite get my excitement at finding just the right old piece, and the fun of not paying retail.......(I had to pay $500 for this one, really at the Top of my budget!) but you guys always do! And Lynn.........He is so nice about my crazy jaunts up or down the state to go get something that HE doesn't think is needed or necessary. Thanks for the DH complement too. Red

I was afraid to say it but so far my project has gone smoothly, too. The few ripples were dealt with by my carpenter, just as I knew they would be. Isn't it a great relief to be a happy story after reading a few glitches that happened to folks here? I hope I didn't jinx either of us.

By and large, I've also had many positive CL experiences, both buying and selling, though it is always a good thing to be prudent when alone. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Nice to hear a positive story...the past couple weeks I've been dealing with flake after flake trying to sell my sofa. Now I see why some sellers (apparently hardened from their experiences) end their ads with all kinds of warnings about who they don't want to respond!

I've sold a half-dozen or so things on craigslist without problems.

I held a huge yard sale at my MIL's house last weekend, and had posted a couple craigslist ads - they helped bring in a lot of customers.

I love craigslist. I find craislisters more reliable than freecyclers.

Hi y'all -- glad to know the smileys didn't infuriate people :) -- and glad to see other folks confirming the positive c's list experience.

graywings, interesting about your experience with freecyclers vs. craigslisters--I've had the opposite experience, so far.

lobotome, that was my thought too--"young men today" sometimes seem too cool to express such unironicized romantic feelings. So touching to witness it. Restores a bit of hope :)

Nice story. I have had great experiences with CL too. My husband always comes with me to pick up stuff and he is such a people person that we know their life stories by the time the transaction is completed. I have many great CL pieces. Love the re-using part of it all.

So far we have only had excellent experiences on CL. We have sold rockers (went for full price) to a banker and his wife expecing a baby. My red sofa and loveseat which went to a young family for 50$ less that just built a new home and needed formal LR furniture. Then we sold our end and coffee tables that went for full price to a couple expecting a baby because they had more rounded corners. (same reason we bought them) LOL. All super nice people, not creepy. I will say with the rockers I googled the guys name and it came up in several police logs for selling drugs, loitering, soliciting etc. etc. and it had a discription of him as well. When he got here he was clearly a different person than the man in the police logs. Different size, hair color etc. I was a little creeped out though until he came. LOL. Our school also bought a table and chair set on CL for the new preschool they are starting. It went really well and the man delivered them to the school etc. So so far we are 4 for 4!

What a nice story . . . stories! It's good to hear that Craigs List does produce good results.
