Sink size for a 36' sink base

Hello GW,

I've been reading a bit today about this Ticor 405D sink that everyone seems to like so much. It's pretty much exactly what we're looking for and $250 shipped is hard to pass up. What I can't find for sure is if it fits in a 36" sink base. I know it says that 36" is the minimum on the website, but I just can't believe it. I'm too used to subtracting inches here and there when it comes to cabinet dimensions. Will it really fit, or should I wait until the cabinets are in to order it?

I am going with a SS farmhouse style sink. I had the same question. I have the 36-inch sink base and was told to go with the 33-inch sink by the KD. If you are planning on having granite installed, then you need to have your sink and faucets available when the installers create the template for the countertops.

I guess it depends on the interior measurements of the sink and your particular sink base as to whether or not you can install a 36" sink in a 36" sink base. I've seen it done with farmhouse sinks here on Garden Web, but I went with the recommendation of the KD, obviously because I didn't want to buy two sinks ;-).

First question: what kind of apron-front sink? Some are meant to sit atop a cabinet that's been cut down to recieve the sink. That'd be like the stainless steel or copper ones, and maybe some fireclay sinks with more regular rectangular shape. There's a thread on here (I think bichonlover started it) where Poorowner and I responded with pictures about our stainless apron front sink installations. Here's a picture of my sink. It's in a same-size cabinet with two dishwasher panels on either side. You could get away with not using the dw panels, but I needed them to deal with a spacing issue, and to cut down on dw noise. Some (and I'm thinking about the handmade Shaw's and other fireclay ones) are meant to go into an apron-front cabinet that's had a cutout in the blank apron front to receive the sink. Thus the cabinet has to be wide enough to hold the sink and still have some space on either side of the sink for the cutout. I think I've seen Shaw's owners with 33" sinks in a 36" cabinet, and the like.

I don't have a Shaw's but rather a Porcher London and a soapstone. The Porcher is 30" in a 33" base and the soapstone is 60" in two 30" bases. Personally, I think I prefer the look of the sink matching the base width. Basically, it is an aesthetic choice. Here is a link that might be useful: my sinks

With all due respect to others, I have a 35-1/8" sink in my 36" sink base w/o any modifications needed to my sink base...that's 35-1/8" exterior width (i.e., it includes a 1" rim all around...so the interior is less.) My sink base does have 1/2" walls, so the opening is 35". If those who are saying 33" is max sink width mean interior sink width, then OK; but, if they mean exterior, then I have to disagree based on my experience. Here are the dimensions of my sink... The newer S405D's are another 1/8" wide...35-1/4" wide. The GTS site says this sink requires a minimum 36" sink base. I have the Ticor S405D and, yes, it does fit in a 36" sink base...that's the size sink base we have.
