It's time to post some more old family photographs

Surely there are some out there that we haven't seen yet . . . or wouldn't mind seeing again. Please share!

I've just started scanning some pics that my late Aunt Elsie, my mother's sister, sent to me in the early 1980s. I especially love this one of my mom at her elementary school graduation in 1927. She was 13. I'll bet her mother made the dress.

Elsie wrote, "My mother was born in Germany and came to the U.S. when she was one year old. My maternal grandparents were born in Germany. I understand Grandpa Stahl died suddenly when he was accidentally pushed off a trolly car or train coming home from a fishing trip. They had eight children. I remember my mother telling me she was taken out of Grade School and put into long dresses and sent to work. Her first job was picking up pins in a dressmaking shop, where she learned to sew so beautifully."

I have a old one.
This is my Grandmother who I never met since she died when my mother was quite young. My Mother, aunts & uncle are included in the photo.

Wow Susan, is she standing on an area rug on top of snow?

If I spent a long time picking up pins in a dress shop, I'd just get really good at picking up pins. LOL

SARAH: No, Not really.I know I had between 10 and 15 the first of last year, most being Stella D Ore's, Pardon Me, and Little Wart. I use to spend my days looking at pictures of gorgeous daylilies,and wishing I could afford to buy me some of them.Way back then, before my oldest daughter bought me a computer and a "COMPUTERS FOR DUMMIES" book to study and learn how to use a computer,I thought all daylilies was these ditch lilies,and not really pretty.After I learned how to use the pc,and found the forum,I knew they have some real beauties out there, and I use to just daydream of having just a few of them.My dreams came true last year when most of my daylilies was given to me as a gift.I am very thankful for the friends that chose to share theirs with me. RITA: That SPACECOAST STARBURST just sparkles.Its truely a beauty.PEARLFISHER PINK is so delicate looking to me. A very pretty shade of pink.MAYBELINE EYES wa just a tad darker, the eye, just a little bit darker,and that hot sun faded it just a little.Still gorgeous, anyway. MICHELLE: Thank you for such a nice comment.I DO try to take good photos to match every one else here.Every one always has such gorgeous pictures,and I try so hard to get some decent ones, too. Hi ladies, I went to Big Lots today and searched all over for the candle lamps but no luck. They did have some smaller crystal bowls in various shapes that were pretty...I'm still debating on those. I went to Dollar Tree and looked at the chargers again. The size was good but after looking through the pile I only found three that were without imperfections so I didn't buy any but will keep checking in case they get more in. A few days ago I was in a "Dollar Daze" and was impressed with their merchandise. Some of it was craft show quality. They had dishes that was nice but not what I was looking for. I'm just not having a lot of luck lately! In BL they had some cute candle (votive) holders that looked like atulip in soft pastel colors. Would be really cute at Easter at each setting so I'm keeping them in mind. I'm looking at things differently after reading on this forum. At Walmart, I got the last Lotus candle holder so I now have two. That made my day, they are so pretty. sandi, I looked for the green checked napkins but didn't see any. alisande asked in regard to my Phoebe McCoy: "Jemdandy, how did you learn so much about your g-g-grandmother? Interesting! She looks so at peace in that photo." After I inherited her photo, I did some serious research on her. My break-through came when I traveled to the city library of Winchester, TN in the county where her mother eventually arrived with the Franklin(s). I found a well reserched article by another genealogist that gave me the lead on the origin of her parents in NJ. The best information of all was how and when Jemima (mother of Phoebe) met her husband-to-be and his correct name, Hugh McCoy. The story continues below: It was during the Revolutionary War. Hugh McCoy, a Scotsman, was not a military man and had gone to a seaport town to attend to some business when the Brits grabbed him and said, "You are in the Army now". (He was conscripted for war with the American colonies.) Hugh McCoy was shipped across the ocean and placed in Lord Howe's army at New York. Hugh was wounded and his commander took him to the house of Franklin(s) in NJ to recuperate. While there, his term of enlistment expired and he refused to re-enlist. The daughter of John Franklin, Jemima, had caught his eye and captured his heart. He asked for her hand in marriage. [To date, this is the only source I have found for my Scotish lineage. These Franklin(s) had immigrated from Acton, England.] Using land warrants from the War, these Franklin(s) and their married daughter, Jemima (Franklin) and Hugh McCoy, removed to Burke Co., NC where they aquired land. After Hugh and Jemima (Franklin) McCoy had about 6 children, Hugh supposed that he may have had some property comming to him in Scotland. He embarked on a voyage back home. He and the ship disappeared. It was presumed he had been lost at sea. Several years later, these Franklin(s) (and Jemima and Phoebe) voyaged by wagon train through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky and eventually arrived on the Elk River in Franklin Co,, TN about 1808. Jemima had married for the second time and outlied her 2nd husband. She married for the 3rd time and outlived that husband by a couple of years. Jemima and her second husband is buried on the family farm. I was privileged to view their headstones and dates on these stones were very readable. John Brown and Phoebe McCoy married in TN, but I have not been able to find any documentation. I do have the birthdates of their children who were born there by calculation from data in Illinois. Also, strangely enough, I know where and the date of Phoebe's demise but can not find anything about her burial.

My great grandmother, Arminta Ratliff Arminta was born in Pike Co. KY ca 1845. Her father moved the family to Texas Co., MO in about 1855 just before the Civil War broke out. The family was torn apart during the war; Her father divorced her step mother, or the divorce was in process, when the war hit Missouri. He was a conscript in a Company favoring the Confederates. He was captured, sent to the infamous prison at Alton, IL, and died there 3 months later of dysentery. Arminta and a brother was left holding the farm during the war; She was 16, He was 14. Another very young brother, Carroll, was in their care. Carroll had a twin sister who was placed in the care of an older married sister. She soon died. Following the war (1867), the family farm was auctioned off for taxes by a Sheriff's sale on the court house steps. The price was $200. The man who bought the property paid $100 at the time of the sale, and then produced the remaining $100 later. The family farm and possessions were now gone and the children dispersed. Arminta married a Murphy in Iron Co. MO and Carroll became s successful wheat farmer in Oklahoma. Arminta's grandparents are buried in a cemetery in Pike Co., KY with members of the feuding Hatfields and McCoys. I can only guess when this portrait was made. My estimate is about 1870 near her wedding date. My copy is the only known print. It is a print on Photo paper, but there are some curious features about this image. It appears that considerable hand work was done. The hair and blouse seems hand drawn. What I suspect is that an original print was made of the face and considerable retouching done with charcoal and soft pencil. A second photo was taken with a copy camera. If this is true, then the photo could not have been made before prints were available. At the time of the Civil War, both wet plate and dry plate processes were available. Matthew Brady shot the Civil War with wet plates because this was the equipment he had at the time and was familiar with it.

Joann, I never met my maternal grandmother either. She died of a heart attack when she was 48, before I was born.

Jodi, apparently so. I would have thought graduation would take place in June. If that's really snow, my mother must have been awfully cold. It's not a winter dress.....this is rather odd, isn't it?

Two of my sisters, I believe in 1957-58. Notice our lovely old barn on the right side of the picture.

Pretty girls, Oldgardener! Their expressions, the clothes, the car . . . all so evocative of those times. And I love the barn!

Sjerin, I thought of that. I guess it's possible, but a telephone pole seems an odd choice for a background photo. And I don't know about the bottom, where it meets the "floor".....

Alisand, do you know where the picture was taken? It might have been June or close to, and still had snow on the ground! She and the dress are beautiful!

I like the other pictures too.

I hope you will, Hellion. I bought a good photo scanner four years before I actually used it. I was a little paralyzed by the fact that I knew nothing about scanning negatives. The good folks at DPReview, my favorite photography site, persuaded me to just do it, and I did. Of course I was immediately sorry it had taken me so long.

So I hope the pics we post here will inspire others to start digitizing their old family photographs.

Another old family pic. This is from 1905. The woman on the left is my great great grandmother Sinrock Mary, Queen of the Reindeer from Nome, Alaska. Not sure who the other are.

Wow--that's a precious picture, Jodi! Does "Sinrock" refer to a location, or does it have another meaning? I love "Queen of the Reindeer"!

This is another recent find: My stepmother, age 3, with her maternal grandmother in Scotland. The back of the photo says "Marion with Wee Granny." I guess this grandmother wasn't very tall. :-)

Wee Granny's name was Marion Orr Hughes. Her daughter Mary emigrated to America with her new husband shortly after their wedding. They returned with their children--a boy, 4, and a girl, 3--for a visit several years later, but never went back after that. It must have been so hard for the parents in the old country . . . no email, no Skype, no jet travel.

I've often thought the same thing about the parents of American pioneers. To see their grown children and grandchildren venture out in a covered wagon, not knowing what might befall them.

Anyway, here's little Marion and big (or not) Marion.

Susan, I really don't know what Sinrock stands for. I grew up knowing her as Mary of White Mountain. She died five years before I was born. White Mountain is about 65 miles East of Nome.

Jodi, that was fascinating. She was a remarkable woman. I'm sure you've been told your Eskimo lineage is visible in your face.

I wish my "tribe" (or one of them, as I'm quite a mix) included drums in their traditions. Love that sound!

I am loving all these old photos and will have to go see if I can find any to post. Just a note..I googled the word Sinrock and after scrolling through a lot of sites found one about Alaska and apparently Sinrock was a place that MAry lived with her husband...her story is told on the site!

Susan, when I was a kid I was often asked if I was Japanese because of my 'almond' eyes. I don't see it in me anymore though. But, it does explain why I choose to vacation in places like Antarctica and Alaska. And you want to talk about mixed tribes ... mine is Inupiat Eskimo, Castille Spain Puerto Rican, German, Irish. LOL

I knew there must be an answer out there somewhere Ghoghunter, but I just didn't have the time to go through all the sites.
