Shelf above sink window or Wood Valence to match cabinets
Comments (14)I had planned a pot rack over the sink, myself. But . . . These open-shelf-over-sink pictures are very attractive, and I'm now thinking of choosing a pot rack with a grid such that it can serve as a shelf too, and maybe a wood facing disguising the exposed edge of the rack, so that it will look more like a shelf. Also, the dishrack thread is making me think of a perforated steel shelf that could serve as dish drain/dry rack, above the sink. This, too, could be disguised via wood facing. The dishrack idea would work if the rack/shelf is mounted lower - in front of, rather than over, the window - as shown in some of the pictures. I like that lower mounting because, when the rack is used as shelf, glass vases, mercury glass, etc would glow with backlighting....See Moreimpact windows and doors (yes, I know this is the kitchen forum)
Comments (1)I have not done this, but I am somewhat familiar with Anderson products. I don't see where it would be a problem if you make certain that the screws do not hit the glass and are not so long as to go through to the outside. If I remember correctly the doors are about 1 3/4" thick, which gives you plenty of meat. Because these are expensive doors, and because you're a bit nervous about this application; perhaps you might consider using one of the many custom blind shops that exist all over Florida. It might cost you a bit more, but if they ruin the door, you will have some recourse. Just be certain to tell them your fears and ask them for some assurances. I'm sure they've done this before....See MoreWood 'valance' over kitch. window?
Comments (36)Buehl, I like the openess of your window area. Looks like a lovely view out the window. Love your kitchen, redroze. :) Thank you kitchenaddict. :) My granite is honed and textured Colonial Gold. Needsometips09, my dining light is the Veranda Round Chandelier from Pottery Barn. They do carry a linear version, but not rectangle. Restoration Hardware carries a similar rectangle style in three different sizes, however, it is pricier. Here is a link to the smallest version: http://www.restorationhardware.com/rh/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1154252&navAction=jump&navCount=2 Fallingwaters, my whole house is one room! Ha ha. Well, except the bedrooms and bathrooms, of course. The kitchen from the refrigerator to the back wall and from the window wall to the side French doors (see new photo to see what I am talking about) is approximately 18 1/2' x 13 1/2'. The dining area is approximately 7 1/2' x 21'. Very long, but there is main traffic to the back of the house between the table and the dry bar. The TV room adjacent to the kitchen is smallish at about 12 1/2' x a little over 12'. We plan on doing an addition in the future and this room will nearly double. The living room that is adjacent to the dining area is a nice size at approximately 14 1/2' x 22'. All of the rooms are open to each other, so it really is one giant room. No formal space. I don't mind formal space, but our house is actually only 1538 s.f. and I wanted every inch to be used and it is! Maybe after we do an addition I'll want to put a wall back up, but I doubt it. ;) Here is a picture of that side French door I was talking about: And here is one showing most of the house (except the TV area): Here is a link that might be useful: Pottery Barn Round Veranda Chandelier...See MoreNew Tech Wood Cladding - Yes or No?
Comments (7)I was recently visiting a friend whose apartment was covered with it. In some small places, the nail holes showed the composite (think MDF) underneath. I wondered if exposure to rain under the plasticized coating would be a problem. I didn't think it looked like quality stuff, but a better installation might help. If you do go in that direction, make sure you get some samples, so if yours gets nail holes, you can match the color with paint. Otherwise, you have pale dots in dark "wood"....See Moregrowlery
