Scraphappy, I like it just the way it is! Nobody ever said quilts have to be symmetrical! Maybe you could applique your cute curly vine in the narrow borders, too - no flowers, that would be too much.

I like it 'unbalanced'. With the flowers appliquéd, it looks like you meant to do it that way.

If you were going to change it, I would put a couple of borders on the other two in the different colors. And I had just typed 'green and pink is what I would do' and I hadn't even read the rest of the post, OR looked at the picture closely. So yeah, if you were going to change it, that's what I would do.

If you hadn't said, I would have thought that was the way it was supposed to be. Recently in a couple of quilting magazines, there were quilts that were set off center just for something different and they looked great.

It looks lovely to me just the way it is, but you are the one that will have to like its look. Would you feel better about putting a smaller vine in the smaller border? I think even adding those two other borders would also look nice. Now, that is your very own design!

Sharon, I like the quirky look of off-center too but I also understand how it would bother you too. I have an idea but it may be more trouble than you'd want to mess with. I notice you have a blank area at the ends of both large borders that have no applique. I was thinking you could take off the two smaller borders plus a couple of inches off the other two borders. Then using the blue fabric from them plus the pink and green fabrics and throw in a yellow. You could strip cut all those to either make a piano key border on the two sides plus a little on the other two up to the applique or do 9 or 4 patches incorporating all those fabrics. Is this clear as mud? It would look like you did it all on purpose. Just a strange little idea for you to ponder.

I vote to leave it as it is-just put the flowers on the one side, and just the vine on the narrower side. I think it looks really neat this way!

Frankly, I love the off-center look. I think I'd run an applique vine all around as she said and putting lots of flowers on only the two fatter sides to balance it. It would look like a pattern you bought to do just that. Very nice colors.

I like it as is and would bind it, no one other than you and those you have told differenly will know that this is not what the pattern called for.

Another option if the two blank borders are bothering you is to flip the flowered side the other direction so it appears that it's the top and you could applique a few leaves and single petals on the other two borders to give the appearance that they have fallen off the vine.

First let me say, I LOVE that applique! WOW, those are too cool!

Now, I'm going to have to dissent from the group here -- I'd rather see it balanced but that's definitely how I am -- I like things very symmetrical, so if you don't agree, don't give my opinion a second thought.

I wonder if you could use a darker navy blue fabric for the left and top border -- create an "attic window" affect?

Also -- what is that blue fabric? Do you know the name? It looks like it *might* be something I have in my stash. Probably not, but I figured I'd ask.

Still pondering this - thanks for all the suggestions!! I think it helps just to have taken a picture of it to really look at the overall effect. When I figure it all out, I'll post another picture.

I agree with what Marti from MO said. If the vine and flowers were at the top, then a narrow vine and a few petals would be nice for the bottom. It would look like they fell off. Either way it's a very pretty quilt.

If there are enough appliqued flowers, I think it'll look balanced.

I'm another one that likes things balanced. I think some marching 4-patch blocks on point or some flying geese in the colors used in the blocks would look great. You could even vary the size of the flying geese to have a section of larger then a section of smaller. I'd make them "turn the corner" and go across the top also.

Second idea: If you have enough of the light blue, you could add on some light blue borders to the left side and top, and then add some vines and flowers on those. Or, applique a bird house on the left side with a vine and flowers trailing up the bird house. Then on the top, applique some birds, butterflies, and bees.

I really like it as is, too. But I also think it would look great with contrasting strips on top and left.

I agree that running the vine on the smaller borders would make it look more balanced. I love the way you corrdinated the blocks.
My suggestion is to use it on a bed that is pushed against the wall. With the left side and head of the bed against the wall, when you walked into the room you would only see the right side and the foot where the flowers are.
Then you can say you made it that why on purpose!!
My son's bed sits like that in his room and I am always fighting to tuck the quilt down against the wall. I just may try it if I make him another one.

What a gorgeous top. Being the fan of "Liberated Quiltmaking" that I am, I'd say leave as is. Everything doesn't have to be perfectly balanced and planned. In fact some randomness makes it all the more interesting, in my opinion.

I like things to balance. If it were my quilt, I'd probably (1) use straight pieces of the pink and green to make the borders all the same width, or (2) make some sort of fancy geometrical patterned border using the pink and green and possibly blue (If it looked complicated enough, no one would think that you hadn't designed it that way on purpose!), or (3) remove the narrow blue and make a green border on the left side and the top, the same width as the blue that already has the appliques, and then applique yellow and pink flowers on it to match the ones already there on the other sides. In that case, I suppose you'd have to have either grey or blue vines and leaves, though.

I vote to leave it. You are seeing more and more off-centered quilts in the magazines. who's to say it was not meant to be this way.

I like it & didn't notice right off, but I like things balanced too & if it were mine it would bother me. I think I'd take the rounded flower look & make a row of half-flowers across the other two sides. Like prairie points but flowers to tie in with your applique, which is gorgeous!

Teresa, I like the flying geese idea! I'm also thinking of taking the narrower blue fabric borders off completely, putting maybe the green on instead, in the wider width, and adding a few appliqued flowers up in the upper left corner. Sure have lots of ideas to work from! I only have about half the flowers appliqued on, so maybe I'll finish that part up, and look at it again, though. Thanks, all!

I like things balanced and symetrical, too...something I am trying to change. I wonder how it would look to continue the applique just around the corners, maybe to the mid point of the first block. That would give those sides some visual weight and might make it look a little more balanced. Don't know, just a thought.

Oh, I love it - and I think the vines and flowers do balance it. I think you should finish it as is and put it somewhere safe until I can get to Nebraska and pick it up! LOL - I crack myself up.

I think it is a lovly quilt top but if I were to make a suggestion it would be to incorporate multipul colors on the narrow sides to balance the over all design. I like the flying geese idea but that might be too much. Perhaps a candy strip made up of your colors as a binding on the narrow sides with the blue on the wider sides.

I must admit I looked at the picture before I read the post and my first reaction was, "what a lovely idea to add the vine around the corner". It looks just like it was intended to be done that way and I really like it. I think just quilt and use maybe a green binding and it is nicely done.

That's a lovely quilt and what a great way to use up some scraps! I don't have any suggestions to finish it but there are a lot of good suggestions already here.

Beautiful. I love the asymmetry, and would leave it as is. I've seen several quilts in shows that were made similarly, and love the "feel" of them.

I would continue with the flowers and finish it just as it is. I adore the way it is off centered and may use that technique. (I'm just not sure about all that applique.)
My husband and I have this little difference-he likes all things balanced. It is truly a personal preference. Since this one is done and beautiful, even if it isn't your thing, finish it this way. Like Carolyn said "who's to say it is not meant to be this way?"

I guess I am in the minority here, but this particular asymetry would make me schizophrenic....OK, more schizophrenic than I already am. I would take off the skinny blue borders on the other two sides, and put on the same widths as the completed (appliqued sides) in a different color, applique on those sides also.

I really love what the applique is doing for the overall look of the quilt!

Marti, that's actually what I'm thinking of doing - then with the skinny blue borders off, I'll have some blue for the applique on the new borders. This really helped - getting alot of ideas from everyone - some things I hadn't thought of.
