market umbrella? patio umbrella?: difference?

Need to get a new patio umbrella- what is a market umbrella and is that what I need want? I think they did not exist or had an alias when I bought the ones past.

In the past we have had just a regular patio umbrella. Each one lasted several years and what did them in was severe winds. With that said, I am not looking to get the ultimate ($$)in umbrellas.

Market umbrellas tend to be larger than regular patio table umbrellas. They're not going to hold up to high winds, either, so for what you're looking for, a good patio umbrella will work.

Thanks for the explanation. What confuses me is that they seem to use the term market umbrella sort of suggesting it is better and different.... had me wondering how I have lived so long without one.
Also I thought I noticed that the market ones had a slit (for lack of better description) towards the top which made me think it might fare better in wind.
In any case, I guess either type in a color and dollar point that I like, would work for me:)

I watched the Umbrella Video and noticed it didn't show the block of shade cast. So it probably works only at high noon in midsummer and if it's positioned right over the chair or chaise. Not very useful. And when you add in the wind issue (our good 8 ft. umbrella goes over, heavy stand and all, when a good gust comes along), it's not worth the price. I looked at those RV awnings that run down the length of the trailer and had one installed over my deck along the house wall. Pulls out 8 ft. and it's 16 ft. long and very sturdy and stable (more stable than the pullout awnings made for house decks -- go online and look up "RV awnings"). Easier to move your chair to its shade than to crank down the wheels on the umbrellamobile and drag it around. Carol

I haven't used the tilt feature very often but my umbrella is in a table so there isn't much need to tilt it. But if it were standalone then I think it would be more useful. My umbrella has a powder coated metal pole so I don't have to worry about rust,etc. I don't know if a wood pole would be prone to cracking but that's what I would worry about. I'm on my 2nd umbrella and here's what I learned from the first one. Of all the things to consider I never thought about the fabric. Unfortunately that's what ended up biting me in the end. Unless it's Sunbrella or something just like it the color is going to fade badly in the sun. I noticed a neighbor's awning faded from a lovely eggplant shade of purple to lilac. Not pretty. My first umbrella was a very colorful floral but after only a couple seasons under the hot California sun the colors were gone with only an imprint left in a most unattractive pukey yellow. How red and green can fade out to muddy mustard is a mystery to me. But it was so ugly I couldn't stand looking at it, even if the mechanics were still in good working order. I replaced it with a new umbrella. This time my #1 criteria was that it be made with SUNBRELLA fabric. It's been about 4 years now and the blue is still the same beautiful shade of sky blue it was when I bought it. The brand is called "Treasure Garden". I bought it at a patio store, can't remember how much I paid for it though. I couldn't be happier with the quality. Oh, the split fabric is very good to have if the umbrella is left open in windy weather. Both my umbrellas had the crank which I like.

I would imagine the long shaft helps with stability, but since the problem is with the wind getting up and under an umbrella canopy, the real issue is the weight at the bottom. If you close it when not in use, there's really not a whole lot of danger. If you do get a stand like the LLBean, another thing to do is to tighten the screws as tight as you can so that they make very distinct marks/dents on the umbrella pole. Then drill holes in the pole where the dents are so that when screwing in the pins, they actually go inside the umbrella pole which gives more assurance that the umbrella won't be lifted out of the stand itself in a strong gust.

Thanks for the input. I couldn’t find and photos online of something similar so was just wondering if anyone had seen it. I’d been muted tones of the same sunbrella fabric type: cast oasis, cast petal, cast tinsel. I plan on getting beige furniture and don’t plan on getting a lot of pillows and what not for accent pieces. Will just have table and chairs and a couple loungers- not couches and pillows.

We just bought a sunbrella at Costco. It was $99. It has the little slits on top and a tilt top. We also bought a granite stand for it. We had extremely bad winds a few days ago and stood up just fine, though that could be due to the heavy base as much as the unbrella.

Then I saw them listed in the Ballard's catalog for closer to $400. I'm happy with my choice as I could not see spending so much for an umbrella, though mine only came in tan and you got choice of color at Ballards. I also saw some in the new Pottery Barn catalog and they have several there in different colors as well in the $100+ price range.

The difference between a Patio Umbrella and a Market umbrella is, the Market Umbrella has a wind vent at the top and does not have a scalloped valance. The wind vent helps in high winds.
