accents and words used

In the GUESS Who ordered a hmbg thread the discussion keeps slipping into How Paula Dean speaks. On behalf of those of us who speak with a southern accent and use words like ya'll. There is nothing wrong with ya'll. The word ya'll in a regional contraction of you all. Really nearly still 2 syllables you without the ou and all spoken quickly. I use the contraction and many Southern (eastern and western) use ya'll. Using the word does not mean anyone is ignorant or improper or classless.

When Paula says the word it comes out as "yaawl". The very heavy 1 syllable sounds the way people from New York City or Newark NJ say it when faking a southern accent. LOL. Much of her accent seems like she learned from a northerner how to speak. When and where and from whom you learn speech patterns is not something in which you have a choice. We can not blame a person for the way they have learned regional dialect and speech patterns. My word I'll bet learning Japanese with a southern accent would be a real hoot! LOL We have enough trouble discerning between 44 English syllables and saying them well enough to be understood, never mine the 66 syllables of the Japanese language.

This is Me not bashing Paula. I love many of her recipes and wish I could eat that kind of food every day. I am told she is very kind and generous. Her efforts for charities are magnificent. I just don't like listening to her speak. That accent makes me cringe.

Hmmmm I wonder which would be more annoying in the long term. Paula's accent or Gilbert Godfrey's whine.

LOL
