Sorry David, but this all seems slightly "off-the-wall" to me (please excuse the pun). Bad feelings? Intimate space? Dangerous? Big old sink? I'm not sure what your point is. I've certainly never considered a kitchen faucet in terms of intimate space or associated one with danger.

I think it's far more likely that the reason more people go with a deck mounted faucet is that they're easier (and therefore cheaper and quicker) to install or replace, and that there's a much wider rage of models and styles to choose from.

Personally, I prefer a wall-mounted faucet, and have always had them in my kitchens. They make clean-up around the sink so much simpler. One swipe with a sponge or a dishcloth around the sink, and all is tidy. I don't have to wipe around any valves or spout bases attached to the countertop.

Many kitchen sinks are in front of a window, and you might not have much space for a wall mount between the counter and the bottom of the window. This would be the case in my kitchen anyway, now that we have raised our counters to 39".

Also depending on the scope of the kitchen re-do (new build/gut job vs. less extensive update), it could take more work to get the existing plumbing up into the wall behind the sink if you are replacing a deck mount faucet.

Finally, there might simply be more options for deck mount faucets. I really wanted a wall mount for our powder room, but only wanted one with a single lever and a finish other than chrome. It seems my options were all very expensive (say, in the $700 and up range) and I didn't want to spend that much.

Now that you mention the longer reach, it's probably best that we got a deck mount. That powder room counter is also 39" and tho we're tall, not everyone who visits is.

The advantages of ease of maintenance are clear.
That makes it unanimous: like wa8b and chicagoans, I too want a wall mount.
It will leave my counter clean uncluttered unholed.

When renovating...
... people don't gravitate towards wall mounts.
This is interesting.
This is the question.
Apart from the availability issue.
Deckmounts are more available, and easy to install.

It can be hard to find a number of wall-mount options to choose from.
((More people eat them cuz they're fresher and vice versa.))
Especially single handle mixer valves: prices are high too.

As for danger and intimate space, let the terms be used; paraphrase them as you wish to explain you wouldn't like someone to wave a ruler near your face while they're gesticulating. Any object intervening between you and the other object you are rinsing / washing. I find the Karbon solves this problem by putting the spout at a lower level. Or, to say it more accurately, people tend to position the Karbon spout at a level much lower than the anchor point in the wall of most of the wall mounted faucets I have seen.

I've heard some people object that wall mounts put the cartridge into the wall and that is too risky for them to allow...

I think you're over analyzing. I think a lot of people think of wall mount faucets as old fashioned and farmhouse looking and want a more up to date look for the replacements (assuming all things equal and plumbing already in the wall that will have to be changed). There are very few designer faucets that are wall mounted--Karbon being one of them. All of the interesting looking ones are expensive. Most of the less expensive, old fashioned looking ones have two levers, and a lot of people who have had that for a long time are looking forward to having a single lever mixer. Some of which you alluded to above.

And as Chicagoans mentioned, wall mount doesn't work in front of a window. The people changing out their wall mounts might also be getting the stylish counter level windows, as well.

Possibly metal shortages during WWII had something to do w/ the disappearing large integrated backsplash sinks that wall mount faucets were often attached to. During the war, people had plenty of cash but rationing meant there wasn't much of anything to spend the money on.

With the post war building boom, houses were smaller & the fitted kitchen became popular. I suspect that the demise of the big farmhouse sink pretty much did in the wall faucet.

Except for commercial applications where wall mount faucets dominate the market.

Another potential reason against wall mounts - they are currently against code in my jurisdiction (although grandma had one 95 yrs ago) if you try to install one on an exterior wall. They negatively impact insulation value in their immediate vicinity, and their access pipes are much more likely to freeze in cold weather.

Get the Karbon wall mount for the simple reason that it's really cool! We built two years ago and the wall mount wasn't out yet, but we got the Karbon deck mount on our prep sink. It's the item in our kitchen that we get the most compliments on.....far and above the high dollar Wolf Range! Everyone always stands at the island and plays with this faucet. You will love it.

I like my wall-mounted faucet very much. If a faucet is mounted on an exterior wall, there's some possibility of pipes freezing.

It absolutely floored me to discover after web searching that there really aren't any serious choices. I doubt the K ohler Karbon has taken a big market share. I'm very glad it's out there now.

Casey, if you want to talk out loud about me, what I'll be looking for in terms of feedback is to know if I'm making progress. Are the descriptions getting clearer, is progress being made, is there more light coming down the tunnel? I'm trying to understand why it took DECADES before a reasonable wallmount was developed. I mean "wallmount with a mixer handle". So, fishing for motives is an OK strategy as you get to see how people react. It seems it's also like a litmus test for a few males who get irked and then post to show it. (!)

Deckmount.
Easier to install.
Works under a window, if the window opens outwards.
Easier to build an exterior wall; no special effort required for additional insulation.

The original post was about the few cases where people already had wall mounted faucets and renovated, and put in a deckmount.

I always though wallmounts were SO ergonomic.
I was stunned to find there weren't more of them installed.
Especially in kitchens.

Now, I'm DIY and I have the time, the tools and the inclination.
So ...
I might just get around to building a shelf, or a two-storey shelf assembly,
and put a wall-mount and its handle into this sturdy shelf structure.

Then the handle will be about 16"-18" from the counter edge.

I didn't say there aren't options--I said most people don't realize that it's an option.

They don't even think of it.

It's clear: most don't even think of it as one of their options. They don't realize it. There are no bad feelings there.
