Towards a unified theory of tile. (Many pics)
Comments (78)Angie_DIY - That tile looks really "old school"! But, I think the wallpaper totally trashes the tile. In case anyone is keeping track, I now own 4 kilns. I have promised my husband I will reduce it to 2! :) Anyone want a cheap kiln to make their own tile? We are almost done with the kitchen. I have never been so relieved to start painting a kitchen in my life! Wow, we have worked on this a whole year. The worst part of the whole project is behind us - grinding down the concrete so we can put down the bamboo flooring. Here is a tip. If you take tile off of concrete, which is messy enough, you will also need to use a grinder to make the floor completely flat again. In hindsight we should have done it when we pulled up the tile. Anyway, I found that wrapping my cabinets in that plastic they use to wrap pallets with (comes in a roll) keeps the dust from sucking in through the cracks and getting all over the dishes and silverware....See MoreNeed a good Encore Ceramics retailer please!
Comments (12)Sorry for the delay. The first picture best represents the color of Encore silver in my kitchen. The second pic is of Encore Silver samples received by GWers lauralocks & Michelle. See how one is silver & one is beigey? I was surprised at the rosy taupe tiles, when I received my Encore Silver order. I did a long post on GW about it. My countertops & cabinets are all white & several people pointed out that I could use a little warmth in my kitchen. The majority of the tiles were the silver, some rosy taupe, some darker silver - probably 5 or 6 different tiles - but the majority were that light silvery color. The combination is perfect for my white kitchen. It absolutely pulled it all together & warmed it up. For reference, my walls are BM LaPaloma Gray although I think it would work with a wide range of colors. Let us know when you receive your samples....See MoreAntique-looking white subway tile?
Comments (6)Well, you're looking for a "high variation" tile, that is, a tile whose glaze does not result in uniform color after firing; or you could recreate the variation by mixing closely related tiles (chosen by you or the tile designer). I just did that, mixing three colors in a 60/20/20 blend at a local handmade tile maker. There's way more tile artisans working in handmade tile than Heath and Fireclay. This also looks to me like a Satin type glaze, not matte or gloss. As for other large handmade tile producers, Pratt and Larson has some lines of high variation tile and a satin option, as does Winchester Tile although their tiles are gloss. Sonoma Tile also has some high variation tiles. Those are just some names for you. Hope they help. Edit: In terms of getting a similar look, I'm wondering if these tiles are 3 x 8? Tried looking at the counter tiles, lol, and could be way off. Also, obviously, they used a darker grout. Lastly, a crackle tile glaze deliberately recreates the look of aged tile....See Moreceramic crackle tile - durable for kitchen backsplash??
Comments (9)"Crackle" refers to an accelerated process of crazing of the glaze. If you're asking whether the tile is as durable (stain resistant) as un-crazed tile, of course it's not, but then backsplash tile doesn't have to be incredibly durable, really. Some crackle tiles have to be sealed before they are installed, but you will have to read the installation specs to know whether your tile will need this extra step. Most crackle tiles, tile and grout, should be sealed annually to remain stain free. Encore Ceramics produces a very popular, and much GW-beloved crackle tile that, if memory serves, is not outrageously priced. Good luck!...See MoreSparklingWater
