If you sweeten your beverage, how much do you put in your glass or cup or whatever you use?

It would be difficult (and time-consuming) to add that up, but especially if you buy organic vegetables, you will save money. Last year I purchased two kale plants and at the time I bought them I thought they were sort of expensive, I think they were over a dollar apiece. But they produced enormous amounts of kale for many months, until our weather got really hot in the early summer. I think I could have kept them alive through the summer if I had tried, but I needed the space for other things, and by then the kale leaves were tasting bitter. But for all those months, I noticed that organic kale of the same variety at the farmers market was about $4 a bunch. If I had bought just one bunch each week I guess would have saved between $80 and $100 just on kale. I was eating at least that much of it, and giving more away. Then there was the organic looseleaf lettuce I grew. I paid $2 or $3 for a large packet of mixed seed (still using it this year) and also supplied myself, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Organic lettuce was going for $2 to $3 a head but since I cut my lettuce leaves with scissors and let them regrow from the roots, I used the same plants all fall and winter and spring and saved an awful lot of money for myself and others. Beets were another good example. They are ridiculously easy to grow and a seed packet seems to last a lifetime. Yet organic beets (heck, even non-organic fresh beets) are very expensive at the market. Not every vegetable provides such a drastic cost comparison, of course. Zucchini squash is usually pretty cheap at the store, and of course it produces so much on the vine that you want to pay people to take it off your hands. Some other vegetables can be bought cheaply, although if you buy only organic vegetables most of those will cost twice as much as non-organic and that makes your cost comparison with homegrown a little more meaningful. But as most every gardener points out, the taste of homegrown food is much better, and the knowledge that food you grew yourself is safe for you and your family is priceless. When you factor in pride of accomplishment, convenience at cooking time, and the joy and pleasure of being close to nature, the value of gardening rises exponentially.

We live in the mountains of North Carolina, at 4200 ft. That makes gardening a challenge, since so many days aren't quite as sunny or warm as they are in the valleys. That established, we grew our own tomatoes last year for the first time. We found that the south side of the house was ideal in terms of the quality of the sun, and the duration. We only spent $2.00 per plant at Walmart, and had 5 plants. We didn't spend money on cages. We just staked with stuff we had. We did have to spend on a couple of beers to trap the slugs/snails. We didn't buy a single tomato as long as our plants were producing (which was about July through September). when the harvest ended, it was really a disappointment to have to go back to buying them -pricey and not very tastey. This year we decided to grow veggies in some pots that we had saved from previous nursery plants. We have been experiencing a severe drought in the South East, so we are conserving water. I figure that watering potted plants is more conservation-friendly, since the water doesn't just get swallowed-up by all the dry adjacent soil/plants. We have tomatoes; yellow bell peppers; zuchinni; and yellow squash, all growing in their own individual 5 gallon pots. We also decided to try our own romaine. I planted all nine plants in a large, clear plastic storage tub. We lost two plants to wilt, but the rest have been growing, and we have already been harvesting outer leaves for salads. I suppose the plants will eventually stop producing new leaves in the center, and grow rather leggy, but til then the romaine is really tender and nice. We had to spend more for the plants this year ($2-$3 per plant),and some potting soil, but we had the pots. We did buy some tomato food, too. Being a farmer isn't cheap.

you know how to use a tape measure. the inside width will tell you how much you can put into it. that is the most practical thing to know. the shortest dimension. maybe "she" will get this measurement for you over the phone. -- you know how to multiply. h times w times depth inside dimensions = this will give you the volume in cubic inches. divide by 1720 to get cubic feet in real terms. any company is allowed to state any number as nominal cubic feet without regard to reality. real cubic feet is always good to know. then, the other good to know is whether or not anything you need to put into it is going to fit well with the shortest dimension. -- a cube holds more, has more real volume, than a long thin space. --

How much do you pay for your vegetable fertilizer?

I’m not organic when it comes to ferts and I test my soil so I rationalize that by not spending a lot of money on general purpose fertilizers. So my answer would be to stick to real-chemical-name fertilizer and to look around for free resources where convenient, i get a big bag of urea which I mostly use to make compost with wood chips. very roughly $26 per year for a half ton + of compost. That also effectively takes care of P and K. A similar size bag of calcium nitrate for $50, which looks like it will last maybe 3 years. Useful for early season cool weather used directly on orchard trees. So $17 a year. Zinc sulfate maybe $5 a year. Iron sulfate $8 Very small additions micros. I got like a lifetime supply of copper sulfate for $20. A bottle of Boric acid roach killer for Boron. Maybe $2 a year . lately I’ve been experimenting with monopotassium phosphate. I agree with those that say it stimulates flowering at least in a N deprived setting. $6 per year. Not strictly necessary. The big expense I’d say is for chelated iron. I read somewhere that Apricot trees don’t like Sulfur so I use it there $72 for five pounds, but it’s probably enough for seven years at least for my two trees so not so bad. Also probably not absolutely necessary. I have General Hydro Maxibloom hydroponic ferts for the Aerogarden. Pretty inconsequential. Maybe $4 per year. Grand total: $65 per year. And I’m not particularly economical. If I had access to chicken manure I could skip the Urea and Boron and maybe one or two other micronutrients.

Only thing I sweeten is tea and I sweeten it by the gallon. Usually 1 1/2 cups sugar.

A large cup of coffee gets 1 packet of Stevia. A gallon of tea gets 4 packets of Stevia. Some brands of Stevia are really strong... we can use half as much of those.

I drink coffee. When I started drinking coffee at my desk at work 30 years ago, I added one package of sugar. Over the years I've increased to three teaspoons. I admit I have a sweet tooth!

When I used to sweeten my iced tea, I used 3 tsp. I don't drink it sweet any more, but I do like hot tea sweet...and use a couple of tea spoons of sugar in it.

I use 1 slightly rounded teaspoon of Equil in my morning coffee. I buy ice tea mix already sweetened by a sugar substitute. Dottie

Don't need any more sweetening... I'm sweet enough! (How's that for leaving myself wide open?) Coffee should be black, and tea, whether hot or iced needs no sweetening for me. That's why I can't drink iced tea from a fountain - they insist on making it a syrup.

AFAIC even Kool-Aid only gets about 1/3 - 1/2 the suggested amount of sugar. A good tart lemonade is a treat. When I buy applesauce I always look for the "no sugar added" types so it's a little more tart. Apples are sweet enough. My opinion is that sugar (and substitute) is to enhance, not cover up flavor.

And when people pour in milk and sugar in their coffee I always ask why they don't just order hot chocolate.

I'm reminded by the Odd Couple episode where Felix gives Murray the Cop a cup of coffee. Murray starts pouring in more and more milk, then about 6 or 7 heaping spoons of sugar, stirs it, takes a sip and goes "Ahhh, that's good coffee Felix!"

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my sweets. But not everything needs to be sweet.

In the south we drink sweet tea. Bumps sounds just right--1-1/2 c. sugar to a gallon of strong, hot tea. The heat dissolves the sugar and makes a great drink for a hot day. Never had sweet tea before I moved to Florida. But around here the tea isn't strong enough. The best place for it is any restaurant in Georgia!
