2 inch faux wood blinds question

Hi, I love the ideas you all have here, and the advice you give, so I have a question I'd like your opinion on. I want to change out my old Hunter Douglas duettes in the living room for the 2 inch faux wood blinds. I have 3 windows in the living room that are on the front of the house. On the 2nd floor are 5 more windows. Do you think it is necessary to have the same kind of window treatments in each window on the front of the house? I have mini blinds upstairs, and haven't minded the difference between them and the duettes, but I am thinking the 2" blinds vs the 1" will be much more noticeable. I know this may seem silly question, but since it is kind of a large $$ investment, I just want to know the opinions of others.

I know I like the uniform look, especially in the front of the house.

I think it looks nicer when all the front windows are dressed the same.

I would avoid selectblinds.com- They are a sponsor on Extreme Makeover Home Edition. We ordered a bunch of 2" Faux Wood blinds from them last fall. Good quality, great price, awful customer service. We ordered the blinds with "inside-mount" measurements but wanted "outside-mount" valances with returns on the sides-this information was given in detail on the order. The order was shipped with inside mount valances (of course). They then sent replacement valances that had returns that were too long-I ended up cutting them back myself rather than go to round three with them. The largest blind we ordered had to be remade 3 times due to shipping damage-that packing materials were insufficient. When an undamaged blind arrived, it arrived at the wrong address, one we were using as a billing-only address when we were between homes. I had to drive 45 minutes each way to Mom's to pick up that last blind.

I have the wider blinds on all windows (except my garage ext. door) and prefer them since they tend to look more like shutters. I also prefer them because they let in more light and view when open. Personally, I like the smooth since I don't feel the embossed looks like real wood blinds that I've owned. Again, I feel the smooth looks like shutters. I can't recommend them for the patio door. I think you'll find them noisy as they clang against each other when there's a breeze or the dogs brush against them. I prefer the fabric for silence and for softness. I've never had problems with my verticals getting dirty from the dogs but I make sure they're open when the dogs are going out. Did you know you can buy extra vertical vanes if you need replacements?

CONGRATULATIONS on your new home! Exciting, I know. Remember this rule, and yes it is a rule: The WIDER the slat , the BETTER the view. If you would like to see the view of outside better, buy the 2-1/2". There is just a slight difference, but I assure you, you would see the difference if you had the 2 blinds/sizes held up next to each other. I just ordered new faux wood blinds (and faux is a very good choice; I have had both). I wanted the 2-1/2" slat but I also wanted the decorator's cloth tape, but alas, the fabricators STILL don't make cloth tapes to accommodate the blinds with 2-1/2" slats. If cloth tape is not an issue, I recommend the 2-1/2" slat. Whether I have a view or not, I like seeing more light and nature. Hope this helps

Thanks my3dogs -your post made me laugh! I googled it and came up empty too, which certainly gives me pause..... I've been trying to analyze my goal for this room and window. I prefer to have the blinds hanging all the way down in the open position 90% of the time. This house is new construction, built about 20 years ago. The windows look like divided light windows, but are not actually divided -the windows have metal strips, about 1 inch wide, running both horizontally and vertically, to create the look of panes. It's very common here in the Houston area, but I have never cared for it. So I prefer to obscure the window with the blinds, rather than have to stare at these fake divided panes. At the same time, I'd like to add some fabric to the window. This is my son's bedroom, but he is only here a few months a year anymore, so it is transitioning into a guestroom/extra bedroom. The window is six feet across, the sill is about 2 feet off the floor, and it directly across from the door into the room. I wouldn't mind just doing some kind of a valence I suppose, but they seem almost old-fashioned now?

I agree. I had 2" wood blinds put in and kept the style consistent throughout the entire house, in fact.

That said, if you want to economize you could only do the 2" blinds on your front exposure.

Enjoy the blinds-I love that classic look and have been very happy with mine.

Put in the 2" faux and then see how you like the front. Since both 1st and 2nd floors will have a blind-type design, you'll may be completely happy with them.
I have different types of shades on the front of my house and never notice them since they're the same color. In addition, they're also a little difficult to see with the dark tint of my windows!

Generally speaking, I'm of the opinion that all front windows should be dressed the same. But I think it really depends on the architecture of the house. For example, I think the upper front windows of an English Tudor or Dutch Colonial--where the upper part of the house is different than the lower--can be dressed differently than the lower and it would be fine. I would say the same thing about a Cape Cod house with dormers: the dormer windows are usually smaller than the other front windows. Different window dressings would not look right, however, in a Center Hall Colonial, in my opinion.

I am one of those that thinks everything should match. One of my pet peeves is to see colored drapes in a window, especially if you see two or three different colors on any one side of a house.

However, once I had 2 inch ivory colored painted blinds in my lower level and ivory mini blinds in the top windows. This was a very long time ago before you could go out and buy inexpensive blinds at the hardware store. Honestly, no one could tell there was a difference, unless they were really trying.

Have you thought of buying the lesser expensive faux blinds from Lowe's or Home Depot, for the upstairs windows?

Thank you for all your advice. I am also thinking that all the windows should match. At this point, in order to save a bit of $$, I think I will just go with the regular mini-blinds. We are thinking about moving in the next year or so, and I think I will be happy with the change from the duettes anyway.
