I love this quilt!

I was looking tonight on Quilterscache and came across this block and I love the quilt! But the part for the tree stump seems a little confusing it is on page 2 I wonder if it could be made without the side pieces or perhaps cut different...what do you all think? I am talking about the sides for the trunk the tiny hsts.

I think this would be a beautiful Thankgsgiving Quilt.

I really like this, too.
You could draw it out and make patterns for the pieces on the sides (or background) and add the little triangles before sewing the background to the tree trunk.
Is that clear as mud??

hmmm I see what you mean Red. First I would use a square and fold it diagonally to get that tree root triangle. I think it could be sewed on before you do that bottom corner piece, then you would only have to top stitch the fold if you wished. Clear as mud?

I am doing the Quiltville NY mystery. Bonnie's quilts are quite a challenge but you always learn something new, like a new ruler or technique. Her quilts. of course, are always scrappy so you just need to dig in the stash. I am actually working on 3 of her projects...2 blocks she had posted on her blog and she did a Labor Day mystery Old Tobacco Road but I am not finished it and now this one. Today I did some cutting and sewed 10 3 1/2 blocks and squared them and that took me one hour. I still have 110 to make...think that will keep me busy tomorrow. I did one from PP one year and it had snowballs in the border. The instructions were a bit poorly and I could not get my snowballs right so I said phoeey and finished it up. I am not doing any more of their's. Bonnie maintains you need small pieces to make the quilt look good. She seems to like the 98 to 120 count or maybe 360 haha. Still time to join in . Jean

They both turned out just beautiful and I believe it will be a treasure for many years and a unique way to remember the special moment. I sold things for many years but didn't do it very often by request but made what I enjoyed and sold it. Recently I was asked to make a special doll dress for a lady who collects dolls and I felt as you did...It is difficult to be placed in that position. Most people don't have a clue of the true value of what they feel is just another craft item that you love to turn out.

biwako...no sashing. The original quilt sample (on the front of the pattern) used fat quarters of various light fabrics for the backgrounds, so that broke the blocks up & it was cute...but ONLY if I could duplicated the colors. I didn't think I'd be happy with my "interpretation" of the original so I chose the 1 color approach, like the one @ the LQS. Plus...it was cheaper to buy 1 color in bulk. Here's the LQS pix that I took with my camera phone. This was all HAND appliqued...even the mixer cord! However...they took a short cut on this one block & printed the block of words (top row...2nd block from rt) onto fabric using the computer. I embroidered my words. :)

Almost, but not quite the opposite of ritaweeda Dislikes: freezer paper blocks- why bother? skimpy/poorly written directions for a project, wasting fabric, quilters criticizing quilts at a quilt show, points cut off, overly complicated blocks with no apparent overall design element, thread tension going wacko, dull rotary cutter blades, embroidery on quilts, making a quilt label, fuzzy thread, making my quilt back, a messy fabric stash (mine is rarely organized and mess free-I just try to ignore it :-|) Likes: well there's the fabric, and of course more fabric, unique and modern designs, trying new blocks, fussy cutting when it has a design purpose or theme, different quilt top layouts, spray basting, machine binding, art gallery fabric, designing the quilt, following the modern quilt bloggers, piecing quilt top leftover strips for the binding. i sure there's more, but those are my highlights for now...oh I forgot paper piecing is ok, but EPP hexagons...no way - not going to happen! V.

I WAS THINKING WHEN YOU DID THE 5 3/8 square over the 8 1/2 square you could do the hst on the 5 3/8ths square first? What do you all think?

I think you have it, Red. Put the smaller triangle on the 5 3/8 piece (or use a square and cut off the excess) before you sew it onto the trunk piece. Much easier.

Yah Red, I like this block too. I think that if you left those little triangles off it would still look like a tree, but I also think they add a little somthin' somthin' so I would put them on. If I ever get this quilt-making hobby in high-gear, this is one I think I would like to make.

I don't PP Vic LOL.
I did buy fabric for this quilt today at Joann's....
So I am more then thinking about doing this LOL!

Wow! I like that block, too. Think of the color possibilities. And I'm sure it could be enjoyed all year round.

I am thinking of doing this in a antique cream /gold background with peach and gold and maybe a rust color colors I may go to Joann's tomorrow and pick up more of the fabric I bought today....
