Has anyone here taken Lyrica?

My doctor gave me a sample bottle to try, primarily to see if it would help with sudden shooting pains in my knee, and also possible fibromyalgia symptoms.

It is to be taken each evening at bed time for a week, then one twice a day for a week. After that if it seems to help, I have a Rx for it.

I took the first pill Friday evening. I slept soundly all night. Woke up Saturday morning "drunk as a monkey."

I was staggering trying to walk. Each day since then has been the same, but not so "drunk."

If you have taken Lyrica, what was your reaction? And is it helping you?

I have taken Lyrica before. It really help my neuropathy pain, but it caused a great deal of swelling in my legs and ankles. I was on the lowest dose at the time...thinking it was maybe 150mg. at the time. But not sure...(I have slept since then and memory goes after sleeping..JK!!!) I did not have any drunk syptoms but for the swelling I loved not having pain. It really helped.

I have been taking 100mg twice a day for a couple of years. I don't get the drunk feeling and I haven't noticed any abnormal swelling. It does help with my neuropathy pain in my feet.

HI Mike, Like you, I live in the north (NJ). I do not know what you mean by growing in plastic. Could you elaborate, or show my the thread about this? I have had to bring my citrus inside every year. And, where I can put them, does not get ideal light, even though i have lights to help them along. So I have always had some of my citrus lose many, most or even all of their leaves at one time. But they always seemed to come back once they go outside in the spring. I bring them out, fertilize, and they grow a huge flush of leaves within 1-2 weeks! I am always amazed how quickly the leaves from the leafless citrus grow compared to the citrus that kept all their leaves during the winter. I am no pro, and in no way am I saying it is healthy for citrus to lose all of their leaves, I am just saying that for me, with my citrus that do lose all of their leaves in the winter, are always the ones that seem to jump back and grow faster than the ones that kept their leaves. I know, should not make sense. I do in a way wish that the closet method is do-able, because that would solve a lot of issues here during the winter. But, I am trying to get a greenhouse up for the first time by November, and may actually be able to greenhouse them this year!!! I was thinking of making a new post to ask about greenhouses in the North East, and how long anyone keeps their citrus in the greenhouse, all winter, or just part, etc. If I remember correctly, you have a greenhouse. Hubby and I came together late in life (in our early/mid 40's). Due to that and a huge host of other reasons, we will never have children of our own. We talked seriously about adopting an older child or two, to the point where I was looking at the sites and contacting some of the local adoption groups. Unfortunately, our life has taken on other responsibilities that make this an impossibility. Hubby's Mom has (probably terminal) metastatic thyroid cancer. Hubby's Dad is incapable of managing things on his own. Hubby's brother (who currently lives with Mom and Dad) is seriously mentally ill and has physical disabilities as well. He requires pretty much round the clock supervision. As their culture is to take care of everything at home and only with family, our lives will be spent "parenting" them. It breaks my heart to know that Hubby and I will never get to be parents, that we will never get to see a child grow and thrive under our care. But this is the hand we've been dealt so we just have to do the best we can. On a practical note, at least out here in CA there are special programs for adopting older/special needs children. You get a lot more support and there is actually a mandatory "trial period".

Yes, you can do it yourself. There are most likely places you can look for instructions on the internet to do it better than the way I did it, but my way worked just fine. I did it before I owned a computer. Good luck. I don't know if I did it correctly or not and it's been a few years ago so I hope I'm remembering correctly. First I measured exactly the size of sheetrock needed. When I cut it I think I left the paper or backing maybe a half of an inch larger than the hole. I took some strong thread, probably quilting thread, and used a needle to run a length of the thread through the sheetrock leaving about 12 inches of thread hanging from the front of the sheetrock. I did this in the middle and close to each corner. Make sure it is knotted on the back of the sheetrock. I pushed the sheetrock into the hole until the backing was in and the sheetrock was snug using the thread pieces to pull it toward me as needed. After that I cut the thread and caulked around the edge and sanded til smooth once the caulk was dry. It didn't take too long. After I painted over it I couldn't tell that a hole had ever been there. "So it's become a choice between paying someone or not having it done at all." I'm limited physically too (and often mentally - lol!). you might have to find someone and pay them to do some things for you. Ask around with your friends for a young guy (HS or college maybe? at a church?) who needs to make some money. Make a list of priority things that need done and try to squeeze out 30-50.00 for a few hours of work. I hired a few guys to do a some things and got ripped off. That put me off for some time in getting more done. I finally connected with a young man (29) who has done work for my sister over the past 15 yrs. She knows his parents (I've been to their house). Even as a teenager he was huge and strong - and she wanted him to do mostly outside work. A lot of rock moving - her land is very rocky. He still does that for her some Sundays. He comes here on Saturdays for 3-5 hrs. He's done a ton of work around here - putting up shelves (taking some down), fixing cabinets, doors, locks, putting down some flooring, moving things around, caulking windows and doors. He also does 'low and high' things for me like caulking around bottom shelves of cabs, cleaning off high shelves and putting things up there. It keeps me from falling off of a step stool or being stuck on the floor until someone eventually finds me there... He's put up curtain rods, replaced my water pump, laid out and connected hoses for future plantings (that he'll do), cleaned up weeds and 'construction' type litter around here. He's even worked on my car. I'm finding it not as easy recently to lift the hood of my car to check water, put in pwr steering fluid etc. He's done some plumbing and some electrical work too. He's quick to tell me if it's something he can't do rather than say he can and mess it up. He's great on figuring things out (more creative and logical than my old brain these days) and problem solving around here. He's been working most Saturdays since last fall and there's enough work here for him for another year I'm sure. He isn't a speed demon but he is dependable, methodical, careful etc - which is much better. He works a full time job during the week but is saving up to buy some land up north of here by the end of the year. He's happy to have the odd jobs - close to his home, a friendly boss (me) who gives him things (ice cream maker, dishes, scrap metal, old appliances, a vacuum (too heavy for me to even move but they are young and strong and have a 2 story house)). He isn't obligated to be here every single Sat or at a certain time. I always tell him that his family comes first so when a family doings is on Sat he shouldn't be here, he should be with them. Financially I need to limit it to maybe 2 Saturdays a month now. In the summer my electric bill skyrockets and that will take priority for several months. I also need to save up for more flooring. Maybe you can find someone like this that you can trust who would like a few flexible hours to work around another job, school activities or studies.

I took it for a few months about 4 years for sciatic pain. I slept very soundly and it helped the sciatic pain.

My neurologist just gave me a script for it for my neuropathy pain but I have yet to get it filled, after reading all the warnings that were in the little booklet that came with it and the online warnings it has me worried.
Especially the part about having suicidal thoughts and people committing suicide on it. Plus the risk of depression, the last thing I need on top of all my illness is depression. I was also worried about the hangover effects the next day, that happens to me with a lot of sleep or pain meds.
I am taking prednisone to try to keep the swelling down in my feet and ankles etc so the thought of something making that worse is not a happy thought.

I had to stop taking it because of dizziness. I even gave it another try about a month later to be sure that the Lyrica is what caused it. It was not a minor issue, which I would have just dealt with. I later discovered that dizziness is one of its most common side effects.

I don't take it but am writing about all of you with neuropathy pain. Have any of you tried Alpha Lipoic Acid? I've been told that it works wonders, I take it daily as a preventative.

I forgot to mention that my knee pain is from a damaged nerve and would be classed as neuropathy. (I am still a little "drunk.")

I am taking 75mg; if it were 150mg, I don't think I could function. :) It has caused me to dream a lot, but I can't remember any of them when I wake up.

I noticed that dizziness is the second on a long list of side effects, tiredness being first. I have not been dizzy; just off balance, literally.

RC, with your situation, I don't blame you for being extra cautious. Suicide is 'way beyond a side effect, I think.

Never heard of Alpha Lipoic Acid; I googled and found Alpha Lipotic Acid. Guess it is the same thing, or a typo.

I appreciate all your replies. Since it doesn't make me sick at my stomach, I can handle the drunk feeling which has gotten less each day, although I've had more pain today than in quite a while.

BTW, I am a tee-totaler, so I am assuming what drunk feels like. LOL

I took it for a while and it help in the beginning but it did make me drunk and want to snack more .I gained wait and made me more depressed and I did have suicidal thought .It begin not to work for me it was not worth the side effects.Every one is different.

I just want to say thanks for starting this thread it is really what I needed to help me decide if I felt adding one more med to my long list would be worth it, at this point in time I do not think so, not with these kinds of side effects.
Some of the other heavy duty meds I am on are worrisome enough!

RC, glad this has been a help to you. Today I'm still a little drunk, but sobering up more each day.

Of course, meds react differently to each of us. I'll stick with this a while and see what happens.

I don't know why you couldn't find anything on it Sue, when I just googled it a dozen pages showed up. As a diabetic I am concerned about peripheral neuropathy, the article I attached is informative about how it works.

I just saw my primary care doc and talked to him about the lyrica that the neuro doc had given me a scrip for he was happy I had not started it he agreed at this point in time with all my other meds lets not introduce another one that could have negative effects.

It could always be added at a later date if needed.
again this thread was very helpful and I did mention in general the various side effects to my doctor too. He said that was a very good way to get an idea of possible reactions.

RC, you did the right thing to talk to your doctor about Lyrica, or any other med.

Today I am almost sober {{gwi:1472708}},and have done some housework that needed doing, with only some low back pain that was bearable.

As I said I will stay with it unless it makes me sick.
