Can people post layouts of 13x20ish kitchens with island & table?

Comments (15)Thanks for all the great pics! It would certainly solve any problems that go along with putting a hood over the peninsula, but I'm just not sure that I can give up the amount of space required to do the corner range. Also, I was actually getting pretty comfortable with how that left wall was turning out as the "breakfast/snack" zone. I imagined this would be the place that I would prepare the kids breakfast, pack lunches, etc. Everyday dishes in cabinets over head, refrigerator and microwave right there, drawers for utensils, wraps and tupperware, and a nice long stretch of counter to work at. We do plan on getting a french door refrigerator. And the "G" design was the only one that I imagined finding space for a second sink - probably across from the fridge. It is funny that you mentioned a cart, Florantha because DH actually requested that when I was drawing up the first U-shape layout. Apparently he wants his own personal prep area. ;) The counter seating will actually be at the bar behind the sink. There will be no upper cabinets above that bar, we envision being very open into the new family room, which is why I anticipate needing a column - that space is now a covered porch. It is not big enough for me to take any away for the kitchen, especially since I want to be able to put existing furniture out there, not buy all new (except the bar stools). We do hope to put a beverage fridge out next to the bar, as well as cabinets for wine and beer glasses. We used to entertain frequently, but not really since we moved into this house, and would like to have a good space for that. The table to the right is our kitchen table. As for a large space for crafts, etc. the table is where I would most likely do that and is also where the kids sit and do homework. And while I love to cook, baking is not something I do often. As for the deeper expanse of counter top that beuhl mentioned as the benefit of an island, keep in mind that I am under 5' tall. I don't like trying to stretch myself over a deep expanse of counter, rather I tend to spread out side to side. I guess that is why I am trying to find designs with long stretches of counter. Whew! Did I answer everyone? Give insight into our needs? I really appreciate all the time everyone takes to think about this stuff, so thank you. I am thinking of the possibility of putting the refrigerator in the spot where I will need a column. Don't know if I like the idea of breaking up the open expanse to the family room with a 36" but am trying to think outside the box. If I come up with anything, I will try to post it tomorrow. Comments (12)I obviously don't know your family/friends/lifestyle, but who will be sitting in the middle island? Is it people YOU would want to be talking to or whom your husband(I take it from your response that he is the primary chef?) would be more likely to be conversing with? I know when i work I like to be talking to people, but they should always be in front of you, not behind you as you are working. I think that if you go with the picture and have people seated on the SIDE and one corner of the island, then it won't seem intrusive into the family room space. Just do as in the pic and have stools that can be completely out of the way when not in use. I also think the inspiration picture has it right in having the prep sink more in the middle than on one far end, thus allowing room for a person or 2 on the side of the island to sit. I know it cuts up the work area, but seems more "amicable" to guests. Another more random question: You say he is territorial when he cooks. Do you do all of the prep for him as more a sous chef? If so, I'd rally for the fridge to be where the ovens are and the ovens to be where the fridge is. If he will be annoyed by you going to and from the fridge to get things and people in his space to get drinks, etc, then the fridge is the busiest place in the kitchen in that regard, so you may think about moving it from his space. Comments (14)"... Should we push the exterior wall back even further so there's still room for an island & walkway?..." If budget allows - that's what I would do. Here's what you could do if you can push the external wall out to be flush with the FR wall on the right (not counting the bay). I think it opens up the Kitchen more and gives it a more spacious feel. Note that I flanked a 48" window with cabinets. If you would like a bigger window, consider eliminating the 15" on the left (or merging 12" of it into the easy reach in the corner) and shortening the 51" to 48" or 45". You might even consider a bumpout in front of the window - say 6" to 9" - to give you more room behind the sink. It depends on what's outside the window - you don't want to put a bumpout where someone might run into it. I put in 3" deeper counters along the range wall. You now have a real pantry - much less expensive than one pantry cabinet, let alone two! It's also much better/efficient storage. The pantry is 81" wide with 12" deep shelves on three walls and two 24" swing out doors to give you 48" of doorway space when needed (e.g., when putting away groceries.) I enlarged the doorway to the Powder & Laundry Rooms to 36". When carrying baskets to/from the Laundry Room, I think you will appreciate 36" instead of the 31" there right now. The Family Room entrance is almost 12' wide. But, to support the span, I added walls on each end of the opening. The table will fit in the space. I put in a 42" wide table, that's DR sized, so if you have a narrower table (39") for the space, there will be more space than I show. The aisle b/w the table and the island is 60" - that's the minimum I'd do with seating on each side of the aisle. The refrigerator is on the range wall so it's easily accessed from the Kitchen w/o having to cross a potentially busy aisle to/from the Garage. It's also on the periphery so it's someone from the DR, table space, or FR an get to it without crossing into the primary work area of the Kitchen. The refrigerator is a standard depth (36") and is recessed into the wall behind it a couple of inches. With the 3" deeper counters and recessing a couple of inches, that's 5". The refrigerator now looks counter-depth, but it's a less expensive and larger size. The island is much bigger to encompass the post. To add symmetry, I added a post on the other other end as well. With the additional size, you now have extra storage for seldom used items in 12" deep cabinets under the seating overhang. The island provides 53" of prep space. The trash pullout is located in the primary Prep Zone (island) but is close to the secondary Prep Zone, the Cooking Zone, and the Cleanup Zone. (You generate far more trash & recyclables while prepping & cooking than you do when cleaning up - and for a longer period of time. So, it makes sense to put it in the Prep Zone.) OK...here it is! . I'm the one who suggested having a clean-up sink and DW on the island, but since you've expanded to put the fridge at the end of the run on the top wall, I think you should reconsider buehl's plan with the clean-up sink on the short wall, and the prep sink on the island. Keep the pantry on the end, and put drawers for dish storage on the side of the island facing the short wall/DW, which completely separates the zones. True, it puts the dishes and DW farther from the DR, but keeps the dish mess m/l hidden on the perimeter, on the other side of the pantry. I think your wife will enjoy prepping on the island, facing the action in the LR, but she can always prep in front of the window, too. There is enough space in the secondary prep area, that a helper can be loading or unloading the DW at the same time. With dishes on the island, and above the DW, a helper can gather pieces to set the table, without venturing into the prep and cooking zonesAlso, I think you need a few more inches on the LR side of the overhang to make it 15" deep. ....See Moreholligator
