Can people post layouts of 13x20ish kitchens with island & table?

I am trying to finalize my kitchen plans. I really want both a table and an island with some seating. It is hard to fit them all in without too much congestion. I would love to see layouts if anyone has one that works well. Obviously if you have a smaller space and you've made it work, all the better!!!

here is a layout of my current kitchen(without table drawn in) and some photos. It's hard to tell, but the table is not centered on the sliding door. It is pushed into the other room so there is space to walk. The table is only 36" wide. I know this isn't exactly how your layout is, but maybe it will help.

Anita.....My kitchen isnt 13x20.....much smaller....but check out www.finishedkitchens.com......it has 100's of pictures of kitchens from the members on this forum...many of the pictures also have detailed information...

Thanks Sharon. I have been losing sleep all week because I stay up into the wee hours looking at the pictures of all of these gorgeous kitchens! I love this site! I haven't seen any floorplan shots there, though. How do I find them? When I click on the photos I get the lists of materials and such, but would LOVE to see an archive of floorplans.

Does your kitchen have island and table? If so, how does it all work?

Thanks for all the great pics! It would certainly solve any problems that go along with putting a hood over the peninsula, but I'm just not sure that I can give up the amount of space required to do the corner range. Also, I was actually getting pretty comfortable with how that left wall was turning out as the "breakfast/snack" zone. I imagined this would be the place that I would prepare the kids breakfast, pack lunches, etc. Everyday dishes in cabinets over head, refrigerator and microwave right there, drawers for utensils, wraps and tupperware, and a nice long stretch of counter to work at. We do plan on getting a french door refrigerator. And the "G" design was the only one that I imagined finding space for a second sink - probably across from the fridge. It is funny that you mentioned a cart, Florantha because DH actually requested that when I was drawing up the first U-shape layout. Apparently he wants his own personal prep area. ;) The counter seating will actually be at the bar behind the sink. There will be no upper cabinets above that bar, we envision being very open into the new family room, which is why I anticipate needing a column - that space is now a covered porch. It is not big enough for me to take any away for the kitchen, especially since I want to be able to put existing furniture out there, not buy all new (except the bar stools). We do hope to put a beverage fridge out next to the bar, as well as cabinets for wine and beer glasses. We used to entertain frequently, but not really since we moved into this house, and would like to have a good space for that. The table to the right is our kitchen table. As for a large space for crafts, etc. the table is where I would most likely do that and is also where the kids sit and do homework. And while I love to cook, baking is not something I do often. As for the deeper expanse of counter top that beuhl mentioned as the benefit of an island, keep in mind that I am under 5' tall. I don't like trying to stretch myself over a deep expanse of counter, rather I tend to spread out side to side. I guess that is why I am trying to find designs with long stretches of counter. Whew! Did I answer everyone? Give insight into our needs? I really appreciate all the time everyone takes to think about this stuff, so thank you. I am thinking of the possibility of putting the refrigerator in the spot where I will need a column. Don't know if I like the idea of breaking up the open expanse to the family room with a 36" but am trying to think outside the box. If I come up with anything, I will try to post it tomorrow. I obviously don't know your family/friends/lifestyle, but who will be sitting in the middle island? Is it people YOU would want to be talking to or whom your husband(I take it from your response that he is the primary chef?) would be more likely to be conversing with? I know when i work I like to be talking to people, but they should always be in front of you, not behind you as you are working. I think that if you go with the picture and have people seated on the SIDE and one corner of the island, then it won't seem intrusive into the family room space. Just do as in the pic and have stools that can be completely out of the way when not in use. I also think the inspiration picture has it right in having the prep sink more in the middle than on one far end, thus allowing room for a person or 2 on the side of the island to sit. I know it cuts up the work area, but seems more "amicable" to guests. Another more random question: You say he is territorial when he cooks. Do you do all of the prep for him as more a sous chef? If so, I'd rally for the fridge to be where the ovens are and the ovens to be where the fridge is. If he will be annoyed by you going to and from the fridge to get things and people in his space to get drinks, etc, then the fridge is the busiest place in the kitchen in that regard, so you may think about moving it from his space. If he's the one that preps what he cooks though, then its placement is fine.

Here's what you could do if you can push the external wall out to be flush with the FR wall on the right (not counting the bay). I think it opens up the Kitchen more and gives it a more spacious feel. Note that I flanked a 48" window with cabinets. If you would like a bigger window, consider eliminating the 15" on the left (or merging 12" of it into the easy reach in the corner) and shortening the 51" to 48" or 45". You might even consider a bumpout in front of the window - say 6" to 9" - to give you more room behind the sink. It depends on what's outside the window - you don't want to put a bumpout where someone might run into it. I put in 3" deeper counters along the range wall. You now have a real pantry - much less expensive than one pantry cabinet, let alone two! It's also much better/efficient storage. The pantry is 81" wide with 12" deep shelves on three walls and two 24" swing out doors to give you 48" of doorway space when needed (e.g., when putting away groceries.) I enlarged the doorway to the Powder & Laundry Rooms to 36". When carrying baskets to/from the Laundry Room, I think you will appreciate 36" instead of the 31" there right now. The Family Room entrance is almost 12' wide. But, to support the span, I added walls on each end of the opening. The table will fit in the space. I put in a 42" wide table, that's DR sized, so if you have a narrower table (39") for the space, there will be more space than I show. The aisle b/w the table and the island is 60" - that's the minimum I'd do with seating on each side of the aisle. The refrigerator is on the range wall so it's easily accessed from the Kitchen w/o having to cross a potentially busy aisle to/from the Garage. It's also on the periphery so it's someone from the DR, table space, or FR an get to it without crossing into the primary work area of the Kitchen. The refrigerator is a standard depth (36") and is recessed into the wall behind it a couple of inches. With the 3" deeper counters and recessing a couple of inches, that's 5". The refrigerator now looks counter-depth, but it's a less expensive and larger size. The island is much bigger to encompass the post. To add symmetry, I added a post on the other other end as well. With the additional size, you now have extra storage for seldom used items in 12" deep cabinets under the seating overhang. The island provides 53" of prep space. The trash pullout is located in the primary Prep Zone (island) but is close to the secondary Prep Zone, the Cooking Zone, and the Cleanup Zone. (You generate far more trash & recyclables while prepping & cooking than you do when cleaning up - and for a longer period of time. So, it makes sense to put it in the Prep Zone.) OK...here it is! . Jordan, your plans look great. I'm the one who suggested having a clean-up sink and DW on the island, but since you've expanded to put the fridge at the end of the run on the top wall, I think you should reconsider buehl's plan with the clean-up sink on the short wall, and the prep sink on the island. Keep the pantry on the end, and put drawers for dish storage on the side of the island facing the short wall/DW, which completely separates the zones. True, it puts the dishes and DW farther from the DR, but keeps the dish mess m/l hidden on the perimeter, on the other side of the pantry. I think your wife will enjoy prepping on the island, facing the action in the LR, but she can always prep in front of the window, too. There is enough space in the secondary prep area, that a helper can be loading or unloading the DW at the same time. With dishes on the island, and above the DW, a helper can gather pieces to set the table, without venturing into the prep and cooking zonesAlso, I think you need a few more inches on the LR side of the overhang to make it 15" deep. .

Well, mine's a little bit bigger, but I could fairly easily fit everything I have into your dimensions. By simply shrinking the island a bit (it's 3.5' x 7' now), reducing the width of the aisles a bit, and making the 18" deep pantry cabinets into 10" or 12" deep cabinets (or eliminating it altogether), everything could fit into a much smaller space. Where I put things was restricted significantly by all the existing doorways and windows that I didn't want to move.

My current kitchen is 13 1/2 X 18 and does have a small island and a table in front of a sliding glass door. However, the table has wound up being pushed further into the family room because there isn't enough clearance between the island and table to make it comfortable. I am in the process of working on layouts to incorporate my family room into my kitchen which will make the space 13.5 X 36. Having lived in a kitchen the size you are describing, I think it's difficult to fit both.

I'm all too familiar with the "losing sleep" syndrome. I've been working on a new layout for over a year.

Did you do your layout on software or do you have someone do it for you? Yours was really helpful for me to see. Your space around your table is very similar to mine, but my KD shows my chairs as ginormous (24x24") and pushed out from the table because she wants to show realistically how most kids leave them! So my drawing looks tighter around the table but really isn't. I would love to tweak her drawings without paying her by the hour each time...

malhgold, do you have photos or a floorplan of the current kitchen that you could post? I'd be so grateful.

I'm gaining a lot more space than my current kitchen with this new plan so I keep thinking that even if it is tight it is better than now...but with the $$$ I'm going to spend, I want to make sure it is the best I can pull off in this amount of space.

One weird thing about mine is that it is an old house, so the kitchen is small relative to the rest of the house and I can't do an addition other than the bumpout I'm doing by my table. (kitchen is on the front of the house with a stone facade).

Okay, now I'm truly going off the deep end...am now contemplating bumping out the whole front of the kitchen and not just the bay...AHHHHHHHHH!

The extra space that Holligator has, almost 5' in length and 2' in width, makes a HUGE difference. The extra 5' is basically the space where the table went. I'm not saying it's not doable, but it will be tight. From looking at your layout thread, it seems you are very concerned, and I don't blame you, about there being enough room to move around.

No, I dont think there is a category with just dimenisons...unless someone included them in their pics....

I live in an 1894 Greek Revival with a small kitchen....It is only 12x14, so no room for a table or island....we eat all of our meals in the dining room....our kitchen does have 12' ceilings, which makes it look larger than it is...

I used Ikea's free DL program to design my kitchen....I took the plan to a local cabinet maker who used it to make my cabinets.....

Anita, I took a screen shot of one design that my former KD came up with and manipulated it significantly using Microsoft Word's drawing tools. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's very, very easy to use one you learn your way around it.

Thanks for those photos and the drawing. I can really "see" the layout of my new kitchen design in your current one.

When you get a chance, could you measure the distance between your island and where your table has landed in its uncentered location? My drawing shows only 3'3"; I think I can tweak and get to 4'6" if I make the island smaller and only seat 2. That is a compromise i can live with if it gives me realistic traffic aisles.

Again, thanks a ton. I feel like you all on this forum just saved me from making a huge and sad mistake.

Holligator has a 9x10 area for the table. Mine is actually 9x9 but it looks way more crowded in the drawing because holligator's chairs are shown normal size and tucked under the table, whereas mine are shown very large and pushed all the way out. Leaving aside the issue of my island for a moment, is 9x9 large enough for table with reasonable movement around it? There are no traffic patterns going seated diners, so I always thought 3' between table and wall was good. Thoughts?

Anita, the kitchen at my previous house was laid out very much like holligator's but was 13'6" x 23' long.

My island was 30" x 84" That was as deep as I could make the island and still have about 42" to the cabinets against the back wall. If I had shaved 12" off the cabinets opposite the stools and turned them into shallow pantry units, the 12" could have been added to the island and had enough of an overhang for stools.

The main complaint I had with my previous kitchen was that even though I technically had plenty of counter space, It was not very functional because it was so chopped up. Doing it again, I would not have put my cooktop on the island, but perhaps included a small prep sink. I appreciate a large blank area to bake and cook, and I found I was constantly moving everything around in order to get enough space to work.
I would definitely keep the island at one level rather than including an elevated section in order to work efficiently.

I'm not sure if this pertains to you, but in your layout, try different shapes and sizes of tables rather than trying to use your previous set. It may be much cheaper to replace it than reconfiguring or bumping out your kitchen.

Anita, the breakfast room in in my current house is an actual separate room and measures 10 x 11. I have a 48"round table with 6 chairs. It is plenty of room for the set. I believe that this set could work just as well in a 9x9 room.

So, the place where the table "should be" is 27" to the island from the table. There was also a half wall separating the kitchen from the family room that the chairs were always banging into. The table is currently 51" from the island. Largely because we needed a path to the sliding door. It probably could be closer if it had to be.

Looking at your layout, what if someone was sitting in both chairs on the right side and someone needed to get to that head chair against the outside wall. Do you think there would be enough room to pass by? Can you mock this up somewhere? I know rules of aisle space are great, but sometimes seeing it in real life gives you a different perspective. I'd hate to see you go thru a whole renovation and then realize it's cramped in the dining area. Have you considered a banquette? They don't take up as much space and there are no chairs to pull out. If you do a search here you'll come up with alot of people that have done them.

This is an early drawing. I was able to get a 42" table to fit easily in the bay window seating shown here.

When we got this plan from the KD, the first thing I did was pull table over to 3' from the wall (off center from the light and the bay window; it looks really goofy!) but it has given me first hand experience with how the space will work and it is great having 3' from the wall to the table.

However, after this am's conversations I measured out where a stool would be on the end of the island backing up to the table, and it is definitely a no go. If I have island seating it has to be along that back wall with the pantry and not over by the table.

I am so sad about the banquette conversation because I think it might have been a great solutiont but it isn't possible without sacrificing a huge expensive custom window already on site for that spot. It goes down too low for a window seat and is all along that front wall where the table is. I think the sill wil be 15 or 16" off the ground, way too low for seating, and the window cannot be installed higher because of exterior elevation constraints (ie, the top of the window needs to line up with other windows on the front of our house or it will look very weird. Also, we can't go any higher because we'd cut into a band board between our stone on the first floor and shingles above and that would look way weird.)

So the bottom line is that the banquette is out of the question.

I am thinking that the table area will be fine, but that the island needs to be cut back. I need to do a new scale drawing and post it...I don't have Microsoft Word, and i have never been able to get the IKEA thing to work. I may have to call KD to get revisions done and will post then.

I had trouble with drawing since I have a Mac and much of the software available is not compatible. I tried Google sketchup and had TONS of trouble with it. I found drawing in Excel allowed me to come up with a 2D rendering. I pasted it into Powerpoint and saved it as a jpeg. Then I was able to upload it to photobucket allowing me to post it on this forum for great advice. Might be of some help to you. Good luck!

My kitchen is 13.5' by 19', and I have a table, hutch and peninsula. I had originally planned for an island, but it was too small to be useful. The peninsula is wonderful, I have 7.5' of countertop, with two counter stools. It's my primary work area.

Since it's just me, I don't use the counter seating much, but when the kids or grandkids are over, that's where they sit for casual eating, and at the table for meals.

Hi, momj47. Thanks for posting your pic and layout. The peninsula is an option I haven't considered, but might be a great option.

How much space do you have between the outside edge of the peninsula and the table?

Anita, ours is about 13 x 18.5. I don't have a layout to post, but we did a 12" deep storage wall on the off long side, a 39 x 65" island of 24"ers backed with 12"ers (dump the latter for seating instead of storage), and a banquette for table seating. When measuring for banquette seating, the table will overlap the bench by a couple of inches.

My kitchen is 13'x20', and there are 7 pages of photos linked. The photos go from original to new kitchen. If you'd like any of the KD's plans, let me know. I'll scan them and add them to the photo album. One end has the working end of the kitchen, the other has the dining area. There is an 8' archway into the family room on the dining end (it used to be a 6' sliding door to the outside patio), and a 45" square window over the sink that is now just an opening into the family room - used to be a glass window overlooking a very messy patio!

Anita, the space between the edge of the peninsula and the edge of the hutch is 7'9" and the table is 34" wide. I had a wider table, but it was just too big for the space. The table is centered in the space and there is plenty of room for chairs on both sides of the table.

The original plans (at my request) had an island. In order to allow enough space on either side for walking and opening cabinets the island was only about 3' wide. My kids had given me a 3'9" rolling island that I'd been using for a few years, so anything smaller just didn't seem very useful. The peninsula works so well.

My planned kitchen is 23 x 14'3. Here is the proposed layout.

Ours is ~13x20, and has a 24" island as well as a penninsula on the far side. It'll have a breakfast nook beyond that, but we have to build an addition first. Here are some photos (I need to take some finished photos one of these days, but these were easily accessible).

Another option is to attach the island and table: You lose one side of each but save the space of the aisle. Claire de Luna has an example, I think, and there are several others. Sweeby has a similar "attached" piece, though it's not for sitting. I like the look.

I can't tell from your plan if you have any type of angle in your kitchen. If you do, sometimes you can play with the design of your island for extra walking space, eating area, etc.

Mine is six-sided.

My kitchen remodel is going to be about your size as well, and I can’t decide whether to ditch the idea of an island or not. Will it seem cramped? I’m leaning toward doing a farmhouse table sans Island. Here are the mock ups
