Well...How do YOU peel a banana?

I have a question.

For as long as I can remember, my Grandma has peeled her bananas from the bottom so she could hold on the the stem end. I always thought this was so funny and remember saying when I was a kid "Nanny, you're peeling that banana upside down." She would just laugh and say "maybe you are."

I always thought this was a quirky "Nanny" thing until the other day. I went with a friend to take her daughter to the dentist. The receptionist was eating a banana and the hygienist walked up and said "you peel your banana backwards." Sure enough, she had it peeled from the bottom. I had to laugh and share the story of my Nanny.

So... How do You peel your nanners?

Everyone knows you take the stem part and bend it backwards and strip down to the bottem.

Nanny is wrong! LOL!

Almost all of the Asian people that work with DH (that come from countries that use a lot of banana) peel them from the bottom. They can't say why, but they do LOL!

I peel from the top, but I use my nail or a knife to nick the peel because I don't like when it bends and makes the first bite all mushy.

Then again, I can't eat bananas anymore because I have become allergic to them. Sigh.

Well ...... I remember when I was a kid, we used to 'collect' really pretty pebbles & stones. If we got one we thought was worth saving, we would always wet it for a better look at it. The reason we wet it was because we always polished our stones with the inside of an old banana peal because it made them shiny. It made them shiny by filling in the pores of the stone and depositing natural oils on the stone surfaces. Is that something we want on plant leaves? Probably not, but at the same time, I don't have any idea how harmful it might (or might not) be. It WOULD make the leaves shine, though. Not sure about the tea bags either, I know that tea leaves in soil are not a good thing, nor is using tea as a 'tonic', but as I think through the physiologic implications, I don't think they would be too bad to dust with. I do think though, that it doesn't have anything to do with the tea in the bag - just that the paper makes a good cleaning material, so I guess I would prolly look until I found a sponge that would work equally well. Andrea, let me venture a more "meta" answer to your question, "What will it do for my roses?" The answer is the same for all 17 essential plant nutrients. An adequate supply will allow the plant to grow normally; a deficiency will keep it from growing normally. An excess will have no effect, or in some cases will cause problems. A few micronutrients are toxic in excess. A number of nutrients, if present in great excess, can interfere with the uptake of other nutrients. (But banana peels are not going to cause problems.) So instead of piling on stuff that somebody says is "good for roses," the better approach is to know what is in your soil and fertilize (or not) accordingly. If plants aren't growing well, get a soil test. Lacking a soil test, proceed with caution. Gardeners would like to believe they can make plants do one thing or another by adding extra amounts of this and withholding that. Unfortunately there are lots of garden books and articles that encourage that belief. But it's not the way plant nutrition works. As an example, you may have read, "nitrogen for green growth." But nitrogen is also required for roots, stems, flowers, fragrance, fruit, and any development whatsoever.

jel48, roses like bananas, eh? I think I saw on Martha Stewart once, that she puts Epsom salt on her roses. I think bananas are a source of potassium and Epsom salts, magnesium. Perhaps just toss in a vitamin pill? I was also reading that banana peels are a cure for warts! doucanoe, didn't tbe Indians teach the pilgrims to bury a fish with their corn? I am afraid if I try that, I will have a bear or raccoon following me down the row digging it up! Even if I don't get bears, I am sure my dogs would find it and think they had won the jackpot! Pew! duluthinbloomz, I am just looking at this the same way I think about buying a new handbag or shoes; mostly just for fun. My friend with the Green Sand was big into organic farmer's market gardening. When I started my garden I bought 2 loads of garden soil from a local business. The first load was "Wisconsin Dirt" and cost about $40 - $50 more than the Minnesota Dirt." I kinda thought I had been scammed, but as it turns out, the Wisconsin dirt WAS better. Kinda a tough pill to swallow! I have been getting small trailer loads of the city compost. Do you think its safe for vegetables? I also put a bunch of semi-composted leaves on, and the soil seems very good. boyle014, good to know about the bat guano and fish emulsion. I saw an article once about the microbes/micronutrients showing comparisons with Miracle Grow, and the article did make the microbial stuff sound pretty good. I wish I could remember what the products were. I used to always get these advertisements for something called GardensALIVE and Agroflash. I am not sure what these products are. I hope to hear some more good ideas, too.

For years and years I have told my friends and acquaintances that NOTHING will eat a banana peel. My expertise relied on my jogging 3 days a week for years and picking up trash on the road. Kids driving to school late toss out banana skins on the road. Three years later the skin is still there! Eventually, fungi and mold destroy it. Now you have proven me WRONG. I'm 77 and not supposed to be wrong. Now I have to tell people that worms and Mr. LIncoln love to eat banana skins! Thanks a lot! PS. I'm using them now in my garden and worm bed! Dances...my daughter has developed a latex intollerance..she can't eat bananas anymore either...it blisters her tongue.

I'm with Gayle...I nick the top and peel to the bottom.

I cut them at the top and peel down, but they never peel very well because we like them on the greenish side. I cannot stand a ripe, squishy banana. They are too sweet for me.

My Daughter will not eat a banana, she claims it scratches her throat. I thought she was being silly, maybe she is allergic.

From the top, but I don't eat them anymore because they all taste the same, not good anymore. My Master Aaron loves bananas though.

It is also very common for people with ragweed (and other pollen) allergies to react to bananas (and melons, kiwi, and mango). I can't eat any of those.

I read the following hint recently.

Peel bananas from the bottom like monkeys do! The reason? Because when peeled from the bottom you don't get the left behind stringy stuff. Tried it...and it worked!

Cut it in half, break off the pointed end of both pieces, peel.

I was just going to say, by peeling them from the bottom to the stem, it takes the strings off of the banana, like houstonmom said. I read it somewhere too.

I just read about the strings not being there if you peel it from the bottom, I did it today, seemed to work. Supposedly, monkeys peel them that way, too.

Bananas give me heartburn. Anyone else have that happen? My nutritionist thought I was nuts when I told her that.

Monkees peel them from the bottom, as others have said, because it doesn't leave behind the "strings" that most of us dislike. I've tried it, and it defintely works!

I like to cut across just below where the stem joins the fruit, peel the stem part back a bit, then put two to four nicks in the skin at the four "corners" so it'll peel well.

May try the other way - we can always improve the ways that we do even minor things.

It's a poor day that one doesn't learn something.

P.S. I may look a bit like a monkey ... but I try not to act too much like one.

Flamingo - finally I know someone else who doesn't like ripe bananas. I buy them as green as I can. If they start getting very ripe, I give them to DH, who likes them like that.

I peel from the top, but I'm curious to try the other way now.

I peel from the top too. And I want my bananas with green on them too. Can't stand a ripe banana. Mushy. Ewwwww!

I like them just just barely yellow too. If they start to get brown, I just hang on to them a few more days and turn them into bread. Yum!
