Braided rugs
Comments (13)I also think how "country" it reads depends on what you pair one up with. I have one in my den that I bought 3 years ago and I love it there. I have a fetish for all sorts of oriental rugs, but in that room, a braided rug felt right. The decor is a bit country (I call it my folk-art inspired room) but not the stenciled ducks and ruffled curtains variety! Goodness, at least I hope it comes across a tad more sophisticated than that. Anyway, I think braided rugs look great with simple pieces, furniture that has clean lines, and also as a "palate cleanser" between oriental rugs throughout the house!...See MoreWhat would you expect to see in a modern country kitchen?
Comments (40)brickmanhouse, they haven't done much if anything to my kitchen cabinets, which are painted plywood, and most of the cabs are 1950s plywood so very sturdy. I do recruit the kids a few times a year to wash down the bottom cabinets, and they know when we cook to wipe up any spills on the bottom cab fronts and to clean their fingerprints from the glass uppers, especially the one with the drinking glasses. I don't think they'd do much to hardwood, which is why I want to get hardwood in my new kitchen: ). My ugly 17yo white/pink/gray linoleum is another matter, however; my husband installed it before we met. When the kids were babies and toddlers and would amuse themselves making "can towers" while I cooked, falling cans (especially the big tomato ones) would dent the floor, so there are some black dents and rents in the lino where the top layer has been gouged out. But I don't mind because I'm hoping that one of these winters my husband will finally replace the lino I have hated for almost 20 years. I don't know about pets because I try to keep animals *out* of my house in general and kitchen in particular, though it doesn't always work, because I have enough to clean around here. Most people seem to be concerned about dog noses on the cabinets and nails on the hardwood, I think. We try to keep the farming *outside* the house. My worst battle is with the kids' chore clothes -- they don't seem to realize when things should go in the wash, or don't think to hang up damp coveralls instead of leaving them in a heap. But all that happens in the basement, far away from the kitchen, and the garage entrance to the basement, which is the kids' main entry, helps a lot. My worst battles *in* the kitchen are mostly aesthetics -- tractor parts that don't belong but are handy to the front door for the next trip to town, that ugly pile of boots by the front door, 4H project posters and country fair entries with pressed and dried leaves, grains and grasses on large sheets of posterboard on the wall by the kitchen table, the large 4H trophy on my marble-topped buffet. But those are also the signs of a well-used, well-loved kitchen, and thank goodness a family that's around the house more often that we aren't... Comments (26)hate to not have to say anything new lol..but yes of course, it's the backsplash. nice suggestions above. will make tons of difference hardware can be changed or not..i think it's pretty versatile a rug will help to set a tone..but if you're hesitant about rugs-I'd look into changing the lighting fixture for something that'd reflect your taste more it's all easy fixes, relatively speaking. you're not miles from what you envision..you're couple feet away:) yes, paint creams white color..or not a neutral, but a version of some color you love, so it won't fight with the cabinets you can use creams and whites together a lot in decor, but with cabinetry it's harder to swing it; so I'd paint. Brick-up to you. Will look ok whether painted or not, or so I feel. Maybe start with the build ins then decide about brick. You also will probably have your backsplash by then..will help you decide if the backsplash is patterned for example-I'd be tempted to paint the brick more It's not a lot of brick too, so whatever you decide-easier....See MoreHow to decorate around a check couch and not look country?
Comments (96)Nice room. Looks inviting as is. Getting someone to do upholstery work is expensive. A local auto/window and interior fabric repair place might know others that will sew covers for home furnishings from whom you might get additional estimates. Like the secretary angled in the corner. Would probably consider removing the kitchen/dining objects and replacing them with items more living room oriented -- framed photographs of places or people and/or other family treasures; then, since the doors have glass, close them. Like the niche near the door with the vertical art. Would want a snake plant in the pot on the plant stand near the window. Solid colors for throw pillows and other fabric furnishings -- unless you have a very specific theme you particularly like such as geometric design or floral or forest or beach. Larger lamp shade for the table lamp -- white for all shades. Probably full curtains or drapes rather than cafe curtains. Use mini blinds inside the window frames for privacy/light control and curtain or drape panels on a wider than window rod that will cover the side frame of the window with your sheer curtains in between or on an inner rod....See MoreRelated Professionals
