Spacing around windows and hood

I have a wall that is 192" long. I have 102" to fit 2 windows and a hood. We've decided that we will go with a 42" hood for our 36" range. That leaves us 60" for 2 windows + space around the windows. The windows will be narrower ones, obviously. I forget the exact size, but I think with molding they will each measure about 25.25" from molding to molding. That leaves us about 9.5" to divide up for space on the sides of the windows.

So what I am wondering is should I have the windows touching the hood? so there is no space on the sides of the hood before the windows start? Or do you think it will look better to have some space there? I'm thinking no space might be easier for tiling the backsplash.

That would leave me about 4.75" on the outside edges of the windows before the cabinets start.

This looks a bit crowded to me. I would want at least as much space between the windows and hood as you have between the windows and cabinets. I haven't seen your earlier plans, but is there a reason why you couldn't lose some uppers storage along this wall?

Yes, the cabinets have already been ordered. All I can do is get smaller windows, or go with a 36" hood rather than a 42".

Unfortunately, the cabinets are in the factory already and couldn't be changed - we checked today. The Modernaires, look wonderful. I asked about one in the photo gallery but they said it was too expensive for them to make. So why taunt us with it? :) However, DH found a Zephyr that I had missed and it is deeper than the Imperials. It is http://zephyronline.com/products/cheng/okeanito_wall I'm still checking out its feature's and functionality and hoping that I can work in a little discount from the appliance store since this plus the range top and other misc appliances will add up. I also wonder if there are any look alikes that are less expensive since this one blows my hood budget out the window (pardon the pun) However, it is a key design feature of the kitchen so I do think it is worth it. And 48" is the largest it goes so I don't feel that bad about the cabinets not being able to make room for 54". Thank you for your help! Those Modernaires do look lovely By the way, NYC, did you put lighting inside of your glass cabinets? I like the idea but decided not to because it will be a while before I accumulate a showcase of teapots there. Did you put undermount lighting under all of your cabinets? I'm wondering if I'll really need it under everything but then it might look dumb if I only have it on the inner part of my L Txs

Here's one idea that moves the sinks to the side walls with the DWs next to them. The primary Prep Zones are a bit tight, but as they're in the corner, I think they might work b/c of the extra depth and the workspace on both sides of the corner. In addition, there's the peninsula as well for whatever prepping you allow there. Why didn't I put the DWs on the other side of each sink to increase the prep space? Because... (1) You need room (at least 12") b/w the sink and a wall or tall cabinet and there isn't enough room on either wall for that if the DWs were b/w the sink and the corner and (2) You need the upper cabinet space for dish storage - if the sinks were in front of the wall and the DW under the window, you wouldn't be able to have upper cabinets. Aisle widths...Minimum aisle widths should be 42" (107cm) if only one person will ever work on an aisle -and- if there is no traffic on that aisle 48" (122cm) if more than one person is working on an aisle -or- there is traffic on the aisle. Seating at a peninsula/island... You need 24" (61cm) of linear space per seat - so for 2 seats, you need 48" (122cm); for 3 seats, you need 72" (183cm) You need 15" (38cm) of clear knee/leg space for the overhang - after accounting for the decorative doors/end panels most people put on the backs of the cabinets in the peninsula/island. Storage... You have two corner susans for small appliances, food, etc. You have two sets of 33" drawers under the 24" cooktops/stovetops/rangetops. Note that the cooktops are not centered on the 33" cabinets. To do so, would reduce further the amount of prep space is available. You have two 24" upper cabinets for dishes/glasses. You have 45" of drawer storage on the peninsula as well as the 9" wide cabinet (cutting boards?), the 12" pullout, and the 21" cabinet under the overhang. I would put your silverware storage in the peninsula You have two 12" pullouts flanking the refrigerator I did not put any upper cabinets to the right of the right cooktop even though they would fit b/c it would throw off the balance/symmetry. Hood...With the added space now for the cooktops, you could do the hood you like - over both cooktops! There should be enough room that you won't violate any Code and there will be no danger of the roman shades catching fire. There should also be enough room so the hoods do not overwhelm the space. . Just a suggestion, but if you eliminated the peninsula, you could put the refrigerator on that wall, move the oven cabinet to b/w the two cooktops, and move the left sink & DW down to provide more workspace for the left prep zones. You would also gain a foot to split b/w the two work zones on the top wall (24" oven cabinet vs 37" for the refrigerator). , Here's the layout and it's associated zone map. Layout #1: . I would increase them to at least 18". 15" wide cabinets aren't as useful as 18" or wider. Those 15" include the cabinet walls and the face frame, so depending on how thick the walls & frame are, you're really looking at an opening of around 12" -- not very wide. Also, the narrower cabinets may look skimpy in your Kitchen. Oh, and no glass near the hood. Regardless of what some will tell you, no hood is perfect, grease, smoke, steam, etc., WILL escape and coat the cabinets. If you have a very good hood (24" deep as well as 6" wider than the cooktop & 600+cfms), most will be captured -- but not all. Grease, etc., will show up a lot more on glass than cabinets.

❤️ A shuttered window! and art art art — you have GALLERY wallspace! Jealous! I have an all-windows colonial in a humid, overcast climate. Large blocks of gray would rule my days if i did not have pops of bright color. It’s like a Basquiat exploded in here. But walllspace means beautiful, subtle paint color! you can do a color wash for 10 dollars (acrylic, yep!), lots of framed art/photos, and for the plants, Walmart should have Dracenas (another 10 dollars) which will add the leafy life shown in Kendrah’s pic! Love her ideas here! May I suggest simple board frames surrounding all the windows/entrances? Any size shutters will do, and you can even make them! Distress all the wood for a relaxed Coastal feel. Make a creative coffee table, some doors for your organizer cabinet (in warm color? Pick up the darker fuschia in the rug? Very chic color, matches your luxe textures) and chunky weave white pillows (another easy make — stitch or weave in thick and fuzzy white textured acrylc yarn into a white cotton blanket. Either cut the same fabric into varying shapes/sizes, , or do a variety of fabric patterns in same color)! You have lovely choices, just tie up the ends, and have fun with it! ❤️

I agree about it looking crowded. I have my rangetop and hood between two windows also.

Hood is 42". Windows were 24", and what shows now is about 22" molding to molding. Space between cabs and windows and between windows and hood are all about 4.5".

My story which might help you: I originally had a layout planned with one 36" window to the left of the hood with cabs up against the hood on the right. Through a series of threads here on my layout and other issues, I was convinced to reduce my upper cab space on that run in order to flank the hood with smaller windows and to give the hood and windows more breathing room. I thought there was no way I could live without that extra storage in the uppers, though I re-examined my storage plan to make sure. Turns out I was wrong. This small tweak makes a huge aesthetic difference on that wall.

Do you have a storage plan laid out that you might able to fiddle with so you could store some of the items planned for those uppers elsewhere in the kitchen? Giving the windows and hood a little more breathing room would really help visually, IMHO. :)

I've already bought the cabinets. They are coming next week. So I cant change anything there. I can do smaller windows or a 36" hood. or both.

If I make the windows smaller, like 22" from outside edge of molding to outside edge of molding, like what BreezyGirl says she has, I could have 16" of space leftover and that would give me 4" on either side of the windows.

Does that seem better?

I've seen alot of pictures on Houzz where the hood was sandwiched between the windows without space. Or pictures where cabinets are right up against the hood. I guess I just am not sure if I like it with space or without. I cannot change my cabinets at this point.

Eliminate the muntins in the window and go smaller. Casement if possible, as you'll have a single pane of glass. Even so, your actual glass in the windows will be around 16".

Is there a view, or are you merely trying to capture light? Because if there is a nothing special view, you could do a header in the wall for the whole opening (including behind the range) and then do glass block for the whole thing, including behind the range. That would get you the maximum light for the space.

Well all of the other windows in our house are double-hung windows. So we were going to do the same for these windows as well. They all have the muntins in them also. Would it look wierd to have casement windows here? Or double-hung windows with no muntins?

There is no view (except of the neighbor's house!) The windows are more to catch some natural light since the other window on the sink wall and the eating area are all covered by a screened-in porch roof.

My husband will never go for the header idea. I get what your saying about casement windows, but I dont even know if he would agree to that.
