So much for privacy

I had hemorrhoid surgery a few weeks ago and today I had a follow-up appointment. I was seated in the exam room and told to wait for the doctor who was in the next room with a patient.

I could hear EVERY word of that other appointment, as if I were in the same room with them. There is a restroom between the rooms with a door on each side so maybe the door on the other side was left open (my side was completely closed) but it was ridiculous how clearly I could hear them - I don't think closing the other door would have helped much. Not that patients from any type of medical doctor don't deserve privacy but this is a Colon and Rectal Surgery practice - I especially don't want anyone having to hear my business in that area.

I meant to say something to the staff but then I got caught up in my own appointment and didn't think about it again until I left.

When I went to a dermatologist, it was the same thing. It makes you so self conscious then when you're trying to explain your symptoms, hearing results of tests, etc. I know they can insulate the exam rooms enough to prevent most as I can't hear anything at my eye dr or my family physician's offices.

phooey,that link didn't work for me. We had three tall large houses built right next to us a few yrs ago but fortunately we had already been planting trees to block the view to that next door property.My first advice is that you decide from what viewing places you need the screen to be effective. From a raised window in your house?and/or from your backyard? What you need the screen to cover will dictate what kind of screen to plant. For instance, we needed to block the view of these large houses(raised up, no less, and pretty close by)from both indoor windows and the ground level of our back yard and driveway.We already had a 6' stockade fence but that was not high enough to do any house screening.We planted a series of mid sized trees that had canopies that blocked from where the 6'H fence stopped, up another 15'+.(We didn't want v.tall trees that would throw too much shade on our property.) Acer negundo Winter Lightning is a great one for us. Acer negundos are WICKED fast growers, and this cultivar has bright yellow foliage and lightning yellow winter stems.We used kwanzan cherries, ppl leaf plum, and j. maples as well, w/ a few conifers interspersed, but none of those are 'fast growers'. I'm thinking a solid tall fast growing hedge on your side of the fence, and the medium size, good canopy trees on the far side of the fence- that would block the view above the hedge . Blueberries? Some grow 4"-6"+ I'm planting blueberries against a shed that can be seen from the street behind me. Just to help it blend in the landscape. They are only a year old or so and are kind of dense. They are already about 3' tall. I can't wait for them to be full grown. It won't be perfect privacy, but filtered privacy. Or you can plant Italian cypresses :D plant them 18" apart for a 60' tall solid wall ;) Or blackberries. Thorny for protection and edible. Pineapple or lime guava are edible and bushy type plants. You can plant a passion fruit vine. They are incredibly prolific and grow pretty solid. They won't grow much taller then the fence though. Maybe some prickly pear cactus. Those get tall. For my front yard, I'm doing roses. I have a small unusable piece of property between my house and street. I planted roses out by the street and I'll let them grow wild. I have one yellow rose at the back of my house that is almost 8' tall and bushy. It's solid. Pic is of the young roses. They are maybe 1-1.5 years old planted from 1 gallon containers. I planted them because there were jade trees there and looked odd. I had a fern volunteer that started taking over the jades. So out they came. It's slow growing but eventually the roses will grow in and provide privacy. Sorry I can't be much more help. I removed all my non edibles in favor of only edibles. So I don't know much about other kinda of plants.

You know how much you can see through the shades looking outwards during the day? Well, that's how much others can see looking into the shades at night. Sorry, but there's almost no privacy at night with 10% openness factor.

Working with a tract builder

Toll Brothers are tract builders...they just happen to build "luxury" homes on larger lots, but they are basically still tract builders! Alphatin: On another note, when one meets with a builder, what are some questions to ask regarding the bones of the house? Basically trying to figure out if quality construction will be done vs cutting corners - or is there no such questions and one doesn't know until they are knee deep? Full disclosure: We have built four custom homes...and by custom I mean, homes...the idea/design for which were first drawn out on note pads, and even a table napkin...not "customized" tract homes as is so often what people mean by custom!!! Our first steps (in two different states, and now a second home in Texas) has always been to do a lot of research into local builders. We have actually walked up to a house, and asked the owner who built their home! What you ask a potential builder about the bones of the house depends on a variety of subjects including your geographical location!!! Here are just a few things to ponder...do you want stick framing? Two by four? Two by six? Concrete? Cedar? etc Siding choices: Stone, stucco, brick, Hardie board, cedar....etc Do you want/can you have a basement? An attic? Do you want standard roof trusses or custom built roof trusses? (Think space! Attic venting needs, roof type!) etc. If/when most people build with a tract builder some/all of these things are dictated by the company's process, but you don't have to pay as much consideration to the research needed to choose from the few options you might be given. Some tract builders are better than others! A small, locally owned builder with a great reputation would build a great home for you. They value their reputation and seek to keep it. A large, multi-nationally owned builder is almost always more about profit than any other consideration...not to say they would necessarily cut corners or build a sub-standard home...but complaining about it to the project manager would most often go nowhere, and your frustration levels may be breached!!! Whatever you chose to do...the one word of advice I offer is: Research. Good luck!

Last time I took the girls to the dentist, we were waiting in the waiting room and the dentist came out to talk to another mom. I heard every word about her daughters 5 cavitives!! I knew the mom was humiliated and I was trying to busy myself somewhere else, but I was basically trapped right next to them. I don't know why they didn't bring her back into the examining rooms?? I wouldn't want to be in that position!

Paula, I went to a gynecologist office once like that. The waiting room was full and we could clearly hear a woman moaning and the doctor trying to comfort her. She was obviously going through some sort of uncomfortable procedure. It was embarrassing for everyone.

My GP has his nurse call patients or pharmacys at her station, which is right opposite 3 exam rooms. Any one in one of those rooms can hear everything she says. The exam room door is closed but her area is out in the open. While waiting for the Dr., I have heard the name, age and medication, prescribed. I've heard her leave the results of a test on someone's recorder, etc. It's awful. I've mentioned it to them, but nothing has changed. Can't she make the calls in someone's office, or a more private place?!
So much for HIPAA!

Ugh. I hate when we bring DD for shots and she has to sit and listen to another kid screaming while we wait. And of course, then SHE gets to be the kid that screams her head off (before they even touch her) and scares all the OTHER waiting kids ;).

Well, if it really bothers you, you can point it out to the health care provider and explain that this is a HIPAA privacy violation and that you want to ensure that your conversations in that office are kept private. Ask them how they can do that for you. If they don't take it seriously you can report it to the US Department of Health and Human Services. This is the agency that is responsible for HIPAA privacy enforcement. Since the HITECH act was signed into law last year with ARRA, HIPAA is now also enforceable by state's attorney general.

The alternative is that HIPAA is a very costly government mandated farce funded in part by taxpayers and in part by every consumer of healthcare.

So much for privacy
