Netflix and Wii, PsP whatever...

Don't understand the terminology, but tired of not being able to watch movies and can't afford the cable or sat prices...so this might be our best option. Would someone please share their experiences with Netflix DVD to your mailbox...vs...streaming to your TV and make suggestions! And what kind of prices are we looking at ... I have wireless router and highspeed DSL service already! That helps right?

My DD and DSIL gave me Netflix and Roku for Christmas. Roku enables the streaming, although you can do it with BluRay, Playstation, and probably other devices. My understanding is that the basic one-DVD-at-a-time Netflix subscription ($7.99 or $9.99 per month, I forget which) also entitles you to stream online or to your TV.

Not all Netflix movies and TV shows are available for streaming, but many are. You can have a regular queue of titles you want to receive by mail, and an Instant Queue of titles you want to stream. In addition, you can go looking (via your TV) for other titles at any time.

I was never much of a TV watcher, but I'm enjoying having this available to me. I've been watching some of the shows I was curious about but never got to see on TV. And when my DGD is here we can watch movies together.

Also, if you don't think you'll watch enough to make it worthwhile, you can rent individual movies from iTunes and Amazon.com. And many television programs are available free of charge - though with a bit of lag time - from the networks that air them.

Several gaming devices are Netflix ready. We us Wii. The link above to Instantly watch TV shows & movies on lots of different devices. I believe there are some more since that page was constructed. The whole topic of streaming Netflix could support a forum of it's own but such forums never seem to gather enough steam to keep moving. You can sometimes find answers to specific questions at Need Help with your Instant Watching System?. The people at the General Discussions forum at Streightdope.com often have good answers to Netflix questions. [Someone here once scolded me for mentioning streightdope. I am not sure why.] Searching Gardenweb's Electronics Forum for Netflix I find 10 threads but I did not examine them for quality.

Thank you! What would I do without y'all? Yes, we decided we are not astute enough to notice the difference between 720 and 1080 on a 32" screen! LOL Thanks for explaining the Netflix to an old lady. I gather that the content is blasting away out there -- all of it -- all the time. I'm not ordering a fresh version of whatever movie be taken out of storage and sent to ME. It's already 'out there'. I'm just being permitted to 'grab it' -- I can start viewing any part I want of what I've ordered. This isn't like waiting for an AdobePub book to be available from my library, where the library has X numbers of the product to lend. Um...so what if every person in the USA asked to view "The Grapes of Wrath" right now? Could everyone get it immediately -- no limit to how many people access the same thing? Both the TV salesperson at Sears and the Blu-Ray salesperson at Costco told us the cable here (Oceanic on Maui) provides only 720 at best. We currently have a Digital cable box; it's a substiture for the HD cable box we ordered in January. The HD box was 'out of stock' -- as we learned only when the installer showed up. The HD is to be installed Monday afternoon. I hope I see a lot more difference with the HD; I saw very little improvement with the Digital over plain cable. (Diital and HD is the same price: $7/month. Makes me wonder.) Oceanic offers a landline/broadband bundle I could use if I bought my own router. However, my dealings with Oceanic over this box have not been positive. (Hours on hold. Mixed up orders. Installer shows up with wrong box. HD boxes 'out of stock' for a MONTH just between Oahu and Maui?) We have no choice of cable provider in this condo; it's Oceanic. So, I need to ask Hawiian Tel for 1.5 - 3.0 mpbs broadband? Will every router push that? I was unable to register the Blu-Ray w/Sony/Netflix, but that may be because our leased router is failing -- or we have insufficient bandwidth from Hawaiian Tel? I'm probably ahead to continue leasing (a replacement router) so that Hawaiian Tel will be responsible for maintaining the router/service for guests.

We just went from a 27" crt tv to a 42" LCD Emerson (bought at WalMart on Black Friday) for Christmas. We LOVE it. It's not even hooked up to HD, just DirecTV. We've only seen HD on it when I get a blu-ray from NetFlix. We really love the picture. We also got a Sony blu-ray player that can stream NetFlix. We got the 4 Monster HDMI cables (5 feet) on Black Friday for $10.00 each. We also got a Wii, which we also love. The bowling is so much fun. We will probably get a Wii Fit for it, too. When we get back to MN, we will get a 46" Sony Bravia or a 50" Sanyo plasma. Our tv has a refresh rate of 60, it works for us. And it cost $398 on Black Friday. The LED and the plasma have beautiful pictures, but the LED is a jump in price. I think they will drop though, as the stores push 3D more. The LED is noticeably brighter than the LCDs, to me. But they all look wonderful in the big sizes compared to a 20 or 26" CRT tv. Like being at the movies!

I ran 120 outlet and next to it a good size conduit for everything else. And that is what I recommend if you are keeping entertainment devices in an alcove near the TV or within 15'. We had composite, component and one HDMI going through the conduit, but when our new TV came with three hdmi we switched cables in the conduit. If you place connector plates for HDMI, you may as well place three, and that is expensive, can introduce problems signal degradation (yes even digital signals can have problems from too many connections, and HDMI is famously hinky sometimes) We have cat5e from our home server and network distro going to our alcove next to our fireplace where a switch then distributes to WDTV Live, wii, and xbox. they variously feed audio to our receiver and a/v to the TV. we also have wires coming though the conduit to the TV for wii bar, center speaker, and RG6. there is also optical from the TV to the receiver to move 5.1 for live TV. For example if i was installing plates, a couple of years ago I would have needed composite to feed video camera and now I do that DNLA from my phone to my home network to the WDTV to watch videos I shot from my phone on the TV. Without a conduit we would be saddled with regularly changing needs and permanent obsolete hookups. Conduit for non 120 applications is code, and gives you flexibility. Just make sure it is wicked wide (ours is 3" diameter) so you have no trouble fishing cable heads through. It will be behind the TV and no one will ever see it, if you or future owner want to remove the end and cover it with a drywall patch a 3" hole is pretty manageable. I echo the thoughts against expensive cables, they are mostly overpriced and almost never better. I use monoprice.com

Yeah, what Alisande said! We have the $9.99 NetFix plan and a Roku that my employer gave to me (one of our chips is inside the Roku). Both work great and NetFlix has been awesome.

We put a DVD in the mail and within 24-36 hours we get an email letting us know our next choice in the queue is on it's way. Usually it arrives in that day's mail. Incredible.

I stream a lot of documentaries and off-beat movies on the Roku. You can also check your Facebook and Flickr photos along with some other services.

i have it through an apple tv gizmo. it is hooked up to the tv via a cable and electrical outlet. it is a wireless connection to the dsl box. you put the tv on whichever hdml channel is available then, with a remote, you go to the movie or tv show you want. there are no new movies available...... you can pay another $12, i think, to get a certain number of more current movies via tv.....not worth it to me when it went over the $20 amount. i don't use it much but the apple thing was $100 and the basic netflix is $8/mo. which is, i guess not awful for times i want to see older movies. my son thinks it offers more than i have taken the time to find out.....lots of time! hope this helps.

We've had Netflix for 6 years, watch streaming all the time, more so than DVDs.

We don't bother with a Roku or Wii to watch streaming movies...instead, I went into Control Panel on my laptop and set our 42-inch TV as the monitor. That way we can watch movies on the TV.

Works great.
