What is under your bed right now...Dust bunnies are under my bed.

Nothing, I hope! I have bamboo floors, so each week I run the dust mop under all the beds.

DE isn't harmful to the lungs unless you make a point of fluffing it into a cloud and then inhaling it. DE from fresh-water sources (Food grade) is less irritating to the lungs than DE from salt-water sources. You can use one of those common dust masks if you want. I've used DE on our version of the fire ant, the thatch ant. I tried everything I could think of: boiling water, vinegar, bleach, poisoned sugar water, poisoned meat. I got a pound of DE and sprinkled it over the mounds. It slowed them down, but didn't stop them. Then I found a fifty-pound bag of DE for $15 and got it. Since DE is quite light, it's a BIG bag. I took a 3-lb coffee can and coated the mounds with DE half an inch thick. If it didn't penetrate their carapace, by golly, I was gonna make 'em CHOKE on it! Well, I guess I had put it on thick enough (!) so all the ants were forced to wade through it and take it into the nest area to the queen. It got them, and they haven't come back. And I see no mounds anywhere else, either (in the past, I had annoyed them so they moved). The stuff is cheap, and non-toxic to earthworms, bees, pets and kids. It's safe to eat, and it even contains trace amounts of desirable minerals. It works by sucking the moisture from the insects' bodies, including fleas and cockroaches. If you looked at DE under a microscope, you would swear you were looking at sharp shards of glass. Some information says it takes one to three days to kill the insects. DE only works when it is dry. And because it acts physically, not chemically, the insects can't become resistant to it. To make sure you're getting the non-toxic kind, make sure it says something like CODEX FOOD GRADE. Call around to your local farm supply stores -- some of them should carry it, as farmers like to mix it with grain and feed it to their livestock, as it's also supposed to help keep flies down. NEVER get the kind that is mixed with an insecticide, or the kind that is used for swimming pool filters. Stick to the food grade kind. Sue

My neighbor has a whole slew of what I think might be poppies coming up. They too have droopy heads and a very furry serrated edged leaf. What makes their heads droop? Is that how it is supposed to be? I'll have to figure out how to post pics. Our neighbors have a beautiful garden, albeit neglected for a few years(lady of the house, who worked the garden, passed this year). Since we just moved in last July, it has been so interesting to see what sprouts up as spring progresses. It is a bit sad, though. Someone obviously took great joy in tending to it. There are at least 20 varieties of tulips that I can see and irises and peonies will be flowering soon. It's all I can do to keep myself from going over there, weeding and spreading a little compost around! Unfortunately, they have a surly dog and I have 3 little ones and the two don't mix...so I am not able to help out. Also unfortunate is that the house might be a scrape, so all that work will be destroyed! so sad :(

Hi Michelle Sorry for the delay in responding - just got back from holiday in Turkey. As I feared, there had been a few frosts during my absence but damage to my Salvias has been limited to a minimal number of plants and the garden is still looking pretty good. This is in contrast to a garden about 2 miles away (a pub garden where I also plant lots of Salvias) where just about everything has been blackened. It just goes to show what differences there can be in mesoclimates. Even within my own garden which has the advantage of being on a slight slope, there are microclimates where the flow of cold air is restricted and a specific Salvia can be badly frosted whereas equivalent plants, only a few yards away, can completely escape damage. My soil has a large proportion of clay but, over the 25 or so years I have been here, I have mulched with various products such as mushroom compost and composted manure to help build up a top layer of better tilth. I root lots of cuttings and the old soil from all the pots also gets thrown onto the garden. Surprising how this all adds up to improve the soil. Most years, in early summer, I try to give the garden a 2" mulch of some sort to help keep it in good heart. I know many Salvias don't need this but I plant very closely and the mulch helps with moisture retention and weed supression. If I go back 10 years or more, I always got a hard frost about mid-September which knocked off my Salvias (except most microphylla types). Since then, although the thermometer always dips around this time, temperatures are not so low and then we seem to then often survive for at least another month. Last year was even better and the Salvias were not really hit until early December when we became blanketed by snow. Ignoring any general global warming trend, I read that we may now be moving into a short term cooler period (there seems to be a cycle of about 25 years or so between highs and lows) and so I may have to get used to September frosts once again. Of course, by then, I may be just pushing up daisies and not bothering with Salvias. Naturally you are most welcome to visit although from the above you can guess that timing can be crucial if you want to see the display at its best. You must also take in Robin's garden as he always has gems that we others drool over. I'm thinking about your request of naming the plants in my pics. It's a bit of a task but probably worth the effort. Give me some time on this. Finally, I was pleased to see Robin include Salvia 'Imelda' on his site. This was a seedling I found near S. greggii 'Peach' in late 2008 and which flowered for me in 2009. I named it after my wife's middle name. Oh, Zach! It took me many, MANY years to figure it out, but I can tell you how to get the shells to come off of your hard boiled eggs!!! I boil some to take along on my trips every time--quick, easy meal when I need one--and high protein too! But I always had the problem you have, so I was finding myself eating less and less of the eggs I had taken with me--I'd be standing at the sink for ten minutes trying to get the shells off all the way--and still have some "egg left!" It wasn't a "quick" or "easy" meal! So a few years ago I spent an hour or so online trying to figure out "how to boil" eggs!!! When I tried this method--It Worked! (This is copied from the top of the document where I was keeping info about the different things I was trying! On my document it's RED!) This works! Place eggs in already boiling water! (x12x) 15 minutes and move to ICE bath! Don’t turn off heat after putting eggs in. Leave it on low to keep it just barely at simmer. What I found online said to put the eggs in the boiling water, cover the pan, and then turn the heat off! That didn't work for me--they weren't cooked all the way since our water isn't as hot when it boils "up here!" So I slightly increased the recommended time, and I leave the heat on really low to keep the water hot enough! (You don't want to "boil" them!) How I do it is to get "enough" water in a big pot to be sure all the eggs I'm boiling will be all the way in the water, then I get it boiling hard, then I "lower" the eggs--as quickly as I can--into the water using a slotted spoon so they don't break, then I turn the heat WAY down and cover the pot as it stops boiling enough that the lid will "stay on the pot!" I DO use a timer, and 15 minutes has been working pretty well for me! While they're boiling I fill up one side of the sink with cold water with a lot of ice cubes in it, and when the time is up I use the same slotted spoon to take the eggs out of the HOT water to put them in the ice water--and I do move them around in the ice water a few times to be sure they cool off as fast as possible. I generally let them sit in the ice water until they're all the way cold! (If you're only doing a few eggs you could just use a big bowl!) This has really worked for me! Every now and then I'll get one that doesn't peel quite "perfectly," but almost always they peel VERY easily. When I peel them I do also hold them under warm running water--don't know if that helps, but since heat expands things I figure it helps "expand" the shell a bit to get it off easier! I crack the shell and then "crack it completely" while holding it under the water, and usually the shell is "falling off" by the time I have the shell "crunched into small bits." That part wasn't in what I found online! All my life, going all they back to when I was a small child--yeah, since I'm "a girl" I was taught to cook my whole life!--the "common wisdom" was to put the eggs into COLD water and then bring it to a boil as fast as possible! That NEVER worked for me! Some people would say "add salt" to the water, some people would say "add a LOT of salt" to the water, and some people would say "DON'T add salt" to the water! NONE of that ever worked for me! Some people would say use NEW eggs, and some people would say use OLD eggs! Some people would say add VINEGAR to the water! NONE of that ever worked for me! Putting them in the "already boiling water" has worked for me! And, yes, every now and then I do still get one that "breaks" when it's put in the water--but generally fewer than when I put them in COLD water! Don't you have a couple old mayo jars around? If you do, put a piece of "folded" plastic wrap over the top of the jar before putting the lid on--to "protect" the cardboard in the lid! Short of that, I would recommend putting them in something that's glass, so possibly a casserole dish that has a lid, or one you could put plastic wrap tightly over--of a glass bowl with plastic wrap!??! Try it! See how it works for you! Digit! I'm glad your eggplant seedlings are doing so good his year! Believe it or not I still haven't gotten my seeds into soil yet! I wish David was still around here! He always had such good advice--and wisdom! A few years ago our son built us one of the platforms that has 6 drawers in it for storage. We had bought a new bed and he made it to match. He did a beautiful job. Under the other one now is a different story. I have the under the bed storage boxes on wheels for storing my fabric. I think I have 5 of them. Nice because you can't see them and they are easy for me to get to..

Carpeting with a nice dirty spot where our Westie hides. Gotta get rid of that icky carpeting. It's the only room in our house that has carpet. Why did I coose that busy pattern for the headboard and roman shades; makes it impossible to find area rugs.

A LOT of dust bunnies!! I really need to clean.Hardwood floors seem to collect them really fast.Also a jumble of extension cords.LOL There is only one electrical plug in my bedroom and I have one of the cords with multiple outlets and multiple extension cords plugged into it.Hope it doesn't blow up some day.LOL

We have a dresser bed. The center pull-out is full of shaped cake pans. Two drawers have all my travel stuff. Two others have party supplies and the last two have costume stuff.

Besides dust bunnies and cat hair? Storage boxes and shoes whose mates are in the closet. I really need to give my bedroom a thorough cleaning. I hate carpet in bedrooms. I want to replace the carpet with Pergo.

a suitcase, an extra bedspread, clean and in a zippered bag, two dumbells, the Subwoofer for our speaker system, a magazine rack on wheels, a foot massager...it's fairly clean cause I pulled it all out last month and swept and dusted!

I think beds are a complete waste of money and space. I just put the box spring on the floor, with the mattress on that--goes with any style furniture, and gives you a couple of extra inches. Saves having to clean under the bed. Makes the room look larger, the ceilings higher. More support (no need to put a board on your bed if you suffer from a bad back). Easier to move when you rearrange the furniture.

So--to answer your question? Nothing but hardwood floor and carpet.

dust, cat puke, neck messager and heaven only know what else. It is very low to the floor so nothing big but I am forever losing bottles of eye drops and inhalers etc. I know they are bound to be under there. Our bed hasn't been moved in the 4 or so years that we have been in this house...It is massive and heavy beyond moving even a few feet. The bed itself is massive and we have a temper-pedic mattress and foundation. It just wouldn't move even if I was interested. Living with cancer has proved to me that a person can learn to live with a lot of dirt and dust when you have to do so.

An empty Rubbermaid container and a small foam mattress I put down for my great grandson to "rest" while he watches a movie...He usually falls asleep on it. And gramma falls asleep in the recliner....(It's called an ulterior motive mattress :) )

Probably dust bunnies,as it's carpeted and hard to move and i can't get down on my knees as much as i used to,old age ya know,lol,and my vacuum is an upright.Need to have dh move it,but he just had back surgery,so it will have to wait.
