New steam iron is bad!!!

Hi, I posted awhile back asking for help on choosing a new steam iron. Well, I finally ordered the Sunbeam GCSBSM-423 Steam Master Professional Iron. What a piece of junk. I used it for 5 minutes to heat any smells out of the iron. Unplugged it for 3 hours and just tried to iron clothes & quilt pieces. It does not iron on the back stroke - just wrinkles the fabric. Plus it spits steam. uggggggggg

Yes, it is going back to Amazon. Love that place because I just drop the box off at the pack n mail and don't have to pay postage. No high car/gas bills.

Now back to the stores to look for a good steam iron with a non-slip base. (I use lots of iron-ons)

Sorry for you bad experience. I can empathize as I have nothing but bad experiences with irons. Now another to chech off my list. I am still searching while putting up with my Shark which I don't like.

I have given up on the irons out there today! I just buy a cheapy at Wally World, as long as it has auto turn off I am happy!

live_wire_oak, The LG washers like all other non-commercial large capacity washers in the USA operate off a 120V 15 amp circuit. With this design you cannot get more than about 1500 to 1600 watts of power out of the circuit. The motor/electronics used to operate everything else in the washer might take up to 500 watts or so of peak power (motors need a surge of power to get going and then use less to keep going) and maybe up to 250 watts of steady state power to operate. The power budget only allows about 1000 watts for the heater. When the LG machine is making steam it's not heating the water so the net additional energy being added to the tub is the same. re: "But then, about half of all Americans think the sun revolves around the earth. But then this is a subject for a whole different forum. luvmylg, We have been using FLers for the past 14 years. The first 13 of these years was serviced by an Asko. A truely wonderful machine in most respects (far from perfect, but still very very good) that churned through 10 to 15 loads a week without complaint until the end. Until the end it's only fault was a broken impeller where one of our kids play items got stuck and broke the impeller. This was half our fault for not checking his pockets and half Asko's fault for not having a good screen which would keep stuff away from the impeller. When the machine broke (electronics board failure) it was right at a time when we really needed a bigger machine but also didn't want to give up some of the nice cleaning aspects we got from the Asko. Bigger Miele machines were also being heavily rumored so we decided to get a serviceable, but temporary machine until Miele announced their product. At the time Home Depot was selling out their stock of Danby's at $300 (plus a $50 energy star rebate). I must say for $250 the Danby has been one great machine. It doesn't have anywhere near the quality and design of the Asko, but it has still been a very good performer. It has an internal water heater which will heat to 200F (very long cycle) and has controls which are simple and direct enough that you can get it to do pretty much anything you want. Now that the Miele W4840 is out, we will most likely get one of these once I finish reconfiguring our laundry room (moving the dryer to improve venting, and moving the washer location so a big machine will fit). So far most of the W4840 feedback on this forum has been good, but I'm also considering the Bosch Nexxt as well if some current info on this forum regarding how the Miele uses it's internal heater turn out to be true. Who knows, might also consider LG machines as well if Miele drops off the list. I like the solid heft of the Miele compared with other machines out there. I hope it's determined that Miele uses the internal heater in all cycles.

I saw a dry iron in the Vermont Country Store catalog at too many $, but I called and asked them who made it. The company is called Continental. Then I found the same iron for a fraction of the cost on amazon.com and bought it. I really love it. It has no holes, so never snags a corner making those little fans that are so hard to get out. And it's heavy enough that it reminds me to let the weight of the "press" do the work, rather than stroking it back and forth & possibly stretching the bias. I also bought a new steam iron, since I thought I wouldn't be able to function without steam... but since we moved 6 months ago, it hasn't come out of the box. I have a little spritzer of water for stubborn wrinkles. And when doing a larger piece, I spray the whole thing, roll it up a few minutes and then iron with my cheapo dry iron. My immediate response is, "not likely". Maybe e-Bay could turn up something. But here's the rub: you are now venturing into the realm of "professional" quality machinery. And it COSTS MORE MONEY, because there are more parts. Because there are more parts you can actually FIX the thing when it breaks down. More parts (that can be more easily replaced) means more money UP FRONT. But it also means longer, hassle-free work periods! I know the cost seems staggering; but I went through 2-3 cheapo irons before I "wised up". I had plenty of money to buy my present iron... I was too "cheap". And I was a fool. I should have bought the damn thing 3 yrs. before and SAVED the better part of $120, based on $40/cheapie iron. Buy a quality iron. I've never thought Rowenta was worth much... they aren't "players" in the industrial field; neither is Bernina.

I buy mine at thrift stores and never use the steam. A spritz bottle works better. Steam irons are incontinent. I didn't invest more than $5 and I have been using it for years.

Several of the forum members have mentioned having irons with the auto-off feature. Hasn't the iron turned off half the time you go to use it? That would drive me crazy. Or can you set it for a longer period? I had one years ago when I sewed more, and it was always off when I needed it.

It is off more than half the time I reach for it, bu a quick shake to wake it up and its ready to go in a few seconds. My opinion: Its safer and much less wasteful of energy. It cools in between but rarely gets fully cold; its not a problem.

I bought a new iron...a $50 Black & Decker...just a week ago.
I have the auto shut-off and I guess it's 'safety first' and, as Kate mentioned, a quick shake and it's ready in a few seconds.
I like the iron but other household people HATE it. It makes a clicking noise to count down the time to shut-off.My sewing area is a table in the dining room area next to the living room and kitchen.With all the starting and stopping I do when using the iron for piecing, the loud clicking annoys the others.
The only ones who don't mind are the dog and me....we are both hearing impaired!

I have found that cheap-o irons are as good as the expensive ones.

For those of you who either do not have an auto shut off iron, or need / want the security of an iron that will shut down after 1 hour (or up to 8 hours), I bought the timer linked below a few years ago and love it. I originally bought it for the sealing iron recommended by Gwen for paper piecing. I now have it plugged into a power strip and also use it for a cheap iron I bought at the hardware store that does not have auto shut off.
I hate irons......

I have a Sunbeam that is probably less than a year old, and I am not happy with it's steam, either. Like someone said, when it decides to steam it is incontinent, and hot water dripping on my feet is not the most fun thing. I got it at Bed, Bath & Beyond and chose it over a similarly-priced Rowenta b/c of all the bad things I've heard about them.

I think I'll just pour out the water and go back to the spray bottle method. The iron weighs less that way anyway! :)

The thing that aggravates me is you can't find an iron with a nice point in front any more. Probably some goofy government safety regulation, but it sure isn't easy to press open a seam any more. Maybe that's why I stopped sewing clothes.
