Hi- Cutting a concrete slab is not difficult or costly, just messy! Its very dusty, but it sounds like you are totally gutting the kitchen and in that case, a mess isn't going to matter. If you are gutting your kitchen, you should definitely be thrilled with the new location of your cooktop and you shouldn't let the slab stand in your way. I don't know if you were planning to cut the concrete yourself, but unless you are very skilled, I wouldn't recommend that. The way they will cut the concrete is in straight lines, so if they need to cut a trench to 4 ft away and two feet to the right, it will end up being an "L" shaped cut. They will pour fresh concrete once the new gas line, etc is in place.

Are you replacing the floors as well? Are they just sitting directly on the slab? Are you sure that there aren't other water lines, etc running through the location where they will be cutting?

Thank you for your quick response! So happy to hear that this is do-able. Messy I can live with, as the kitchen has been completely gutted for some time as I ponder my options. There had been a tile floor directly on the slab. I have 7 1/2 ft ceilings, so I prefer the lowest profile flooring I can get (i.e. no subfloor). And yes, there is (defunct) radiant heat piping in the slab. Does that change your opinion? I may do a floating or glue-down 3/8" engineered hardwood floor with radiant blankets underneath, but havent gotten that far yet, as the layout is the critical first decision. I could have more cabinets placed along the remaining walls if I buried the baseboard heatpipes and replaced them w/ a Toesters toekick unit, as long as they're here w/ the saws.(Passed the heat load consult.) Can't wait to get past these concrete related challenges so the real design fun can begin! Any further advice is so very greatly appreciated.

If I relocate the kitchen sink and DW to an island four feet from the main drain by cutting a trench into the slab floor for the drain and water lines,will the water automatically flow from the new sink drain to the main drain, or is a pump necessitated? Thank you again for any help.

greeneyedgirl, have you been in the attic to see if the gas line could possibly be up there? We're on slab too, and part of our gas lines are in the attic. MUCH easier to move.

I have 2 trenches in my slab -- one goes from the wall to the island and was intended to supply gas to a cooktop when we changed it later, but we moved the cooktop to the wall instead. We filled in the pipe from the first trench and used the downdraft vent to run the supply lines. We just had to trench to joint the prep sink drain to the main sink drain. Fortunately, it was moving in that direction and it wasn't much either time. You can do it, but if you really want to move the cooktop to the outer wall, you might be able to run the pipe in the wall and ceiling joist space and not have to go into the slab. More feet of pipe would cost more but you would have easier access if anything ever has a problem and no mess or cost for slab work.
