De-installing/reinstalling Shaw's sink --how???????

First, thank you all for your responses to my earlier post about the disastrous marble install. Here is an update, and a plea for more guidance-- Casey ---- are you there????

I contacted Rohl. I explained verbally and in writing that the crack was caused by the installer. But Rohl's said, to my complete surprise, that they would replace it. (It was purchased last May so is just inside the one year window . . .)

I would have to order the new sink. Then, when the currently installed sink is taken out I need to send them a photo and they reimburse-- at least that's how I think it works.

But now we are faced with the challenge of how to get it out and the new one in. The marble is already installed. The cabinet below was crafted by my DH out of gumwood to fit the curve of the current sink. The new one will be different.

So, we start by de-installing all the plumbing and GD. Then what?

I would appreciate any and all guidance . . . .including -- should we even try to do this? The crack is a single hairline crack. It is not raised or palpable. There are no leaks. Now. What scares me is what could happen down the road. I could live with the fine line -- it is almost not noticeable with the grid in the sink. But the thought of future cracks or leaks . . . .????? Rohl saw the image that I sent of the crack and they offered a new sink . . . .

Whether or not I can get the marble fabricator to pay for this is a whole separate discussion. I will pursue it, of course, once I feel more certain of what should be done.

Would greatly appreciate guidance . . .

Two other posters had the same problem (maybe a bit worse as they had many cracks), I know Rohl offered to replace Theressa's sink, but I don't know what she decided to do. You could email her and ask. The other was Grlwprls but I don't think she was considering taking her sink out.

What kind of new obnoxious noise? I'm thinking splashing/gurgling or wet sucking sounds as amoung the possible. If you can post a photo of the under-sink plumbing it might help with recommendations. How long did you have to wait for glue to dry? It should have been near-instantaneous, and the plumber should have been able to check the quality of his work before he left. Filter??? Air Transfer Gap???

laurencp: The fabricator said it was "no problem" because it wasn't his. How much this entails depends upon the sophistication level and fussiness of the customer more than anything else. I wouldn't build and paint match two new doors for less than $750.00, but that's just me. I can't imagine biting off a bigger nightmare than a paint match on such a small job. All the headache, none of the money.

Sorry - I have NO idea what a "Shaw's Fireclay" sink is... However - you stated that your husband installed (cut) the marble; and cabinets, etc. for this installation. Suggestion. The sink is gong to be replaced. Contact Rohl's or Shaw's and ask for permission to destroy the sink being replaced. Have Rohl's come on out and take a look. Remove the plumbing, garbage disposal, etc. Then using some select instruments of destruction; cut the sink into some pieces and remove it. You can slide some THIN material under the sink edges to make cutting the sink flange easier without damaging other stuff. Once the sink is out in pieces - you now have more access to the marble edges - to try and get those up without damaging them. You will have to remove any Marble or Cabinet which would prohibit removing the sink WHOLE. Since a new one is being installed. But with the old one removed in pieces - it might be easier to accomplish this task. However - Marble breaks very easily; and you are probably going to have to be redoing at least some of the Marble pieces... D.

Tina, thank you soooooooo much! I kinda feel like we are in this together cause my sink looks just about like yours. That ain't so good. HA! I did not see your reply so I appreciate this new post. I betcha we will be helping out some poor other fools who may be have this same problem looming in their futures. My sink base looks similar to yours, although one side of mine has a larger gap then the other side. I think I mentioned that the cab base was originally cut for another Shaw sink that was a real wonky mess and would not even drain. We got another sink and, of course, it is smaller then the first one. The biggest gaps were on the curved bottom part. Then my hubby (no less) and the cabinet dude had the bright idea to make the gap the same from the bottom to the top so cab dude cut an equal distance up the side to even it out. They thought the caulk would look more uniform that way. Oh, yeah, that makes alot of sense. I don't know what to do nor how picky to be about all this. Obviously, my hubby is not too picky! We are going to caulk and see how that looks. My cabinets were ordered from Decora and they are a very creamy almost yellow color with rust glaze. The thinking is we will match the caulk to the cabs, although it seems to me I have seen more people on this group match the caulk to the sink. Uh, again, I don't know. Hubby did say maybe they could just order a new panel piece if the caulk does not work. KD guy has vaguely mentioned some kind of mouldings or something maybe similar to what you are talking about. My problem with that is it sounds like these would be pretty thick and would take away from the shape of the sink. Sorry I don't have any pics. I am not at the house now and will have to study up on how to post pics, as well, cause I'm a computer idiot. Anyway, thank you again for your reply and your pictures. I wish us both well. We will get it fixed one way or another. I do love the way my sink looks other wise. And I if this freakin kitchen remodel ever gets finished, I hope to actually use and enjoy my sink. Unless that hairline crack is going to morph into a leak, I do not recommend taking out the sink! I didn't have the problem you are having, though. In my case, the rim of the sink was deeply gouged in several places, by a dropped power tool. I was unwilling to accept a surface refinishing and demanded a new sink. A couple of years later,I'm still dealing with the consequences of that decision. If I had it to do all over again, I'd probably have accepted resurfacing of the damaged rim and taken a contractor's price adjustment. You live and you learn.

In your case, I don't know what the consequences are of a hairline crack in the bottom of the sink. If Rohl is willing to change out the sink because they think that crack might eventually deepen or spread and cause leaks , then clearly you need to change it out. However, if the crack is just cosmetic and Rohl is just being a lovely company to do business with, I would not do it! The hassle and financial cost of removing an already installed handmade sink and replacing it with another - without ruining the sink base cab and/or getting the scribing to match-- IMHO is just not worth it.

OTOH, Sayde,I would give a whole lot of deference to DH's assessment of the situation. Especially since he built the cabinetry, he's in a much better place to know exactly what kind of changes he's capable of performing if the sink must be removed and a new one installed. In my case, the cheapest and most expedient "fix" was to mount a cover panel over the install area. However, the "perfect" solution would have been to buy a whole new sink base cabinet and to start from scratch. Two years later though, the cheap fix has now failed and a new Plain & Fancy sink base cab is just not in the post-reno budget. (:-

Thank you Marthavila. I will talk to Rohl again tomorrow and see what they say. I was surprised that, when I sent the image and described what had happened, they responded back to me that the image indicated to them that it was a "thermal crack" I found this odd because I had not used the sink, not even run any water into it, and it had just sat there, perfect, til this "installation." But I will try to get some more understanding.
