Now, you can't wear USA flag colors to school?

This country's going down the toilet. This is unbelievable.

Well, they reversed their decision, so the t-shirts are back in. But it's a complex issue. The school is 40% Hispanic, and those students are loyal to their holiday. The five boys say they weren't trying to start trouble, but I think they it's reasonable to assume they were using their clothes to make a confrontational statement. I don't blame the school for getting nervous, although I do think they overreacted.

While the R/W/B "rule" was rejected by the district, the kids were nonetheless sent home for the day. It wasn't until "sundown" according to the report that the District said the clothes (presumably excepting the bandana) were acceptable. I do think the R/W/B was worn because it was Cinco De Mayo and probably not because of a desire to wear it regularly. But this type of faux pas could easily backfire on the asst. principal.

The asst. principal not only overreacted but AFAIC he fueled the albeit non-existant flames. I can't help but wonder if his heritage was a motivation here. Especially considering that not all of the kids were wearing flags, some were wearing just a combination of red, white and blue colors on their clothes. I have a sneaking suspicion that there were other kids in that school wearing something red that day, and perhaps a (white) t-shirt with it and perhaps even (blue) jeans? I wonder if any others were sent home, told to remove their clothes or turn them inside out. I also wonder if they fly a flag at that school or if that's prohibited by this asst. principal too?

If Cinco De Mayo celebrations in the school worry the administrators so, perhaps those celebrations shouldn't be allowed? Methinks this is a case where power went to this guy's head... Hopefully that's all the motivation that was there. Likely he'll have some scrutiny in the future.

I don't really remember, other than a couple of pairs that matched specific outfits. That was back when we bought 'outfits', we couldn't wear pants (certainly not jeans). I babysat for most of my clothes money. There was a dress code, a minimum length for skirts. My first year out of high school I worked part time in a forestry office while going to Jr College (it was Weyco) and they still had a dress code, not even matching jackets/pantsuits were allowed. I was scolded for culottes (aka split skirt) (knee length and with stockings) when I showed up for the afternoon after attending classes. The head forester, crabby old guy ;) I see his son occasionally now and I shared with him that his dad had read me the riot act for being inappropriately dressed (he had also said disrespectfully dressed) and he really laughed, enjoyed hearing a story about long ago (1968) since his dad passed several years back, thanked me for telling him. We live on a large lake year round and fly both a US flag and an Earth flag at all times. We also have a rainbow flag, the Jolly Rodger, several state flags and Tibetian prayer flags that are flown at various times, depending on the weather and my ambition level. Despite being a progressive, leftie super liberal who holds disgust and hate in my heart for many of the US elected officials, I believe in the US and believe we as a nation could (and should) do much better in terms of how we treat the rest of the world, women, LGBTQ persons, minorities, the poor, immigrants and prisoners (to name a few), I keep going back to what my late father always said "Our system is flawed, but it's the best there is, and only the laziness of our citizens will cause it to fail". Personally I think a few more Scandanavian principles would be in order, but overall, I have to agree with him, take marriage equality, which only a few years ago seemed far from our grasp, now is the law of the land. And that's why I fly the flag.

My DD had a flannel plaid shirt from Urban Outfitters a few years back that had that same back. I know what you mean about polyester, but this such a nice top that I give it a try. It is the type of top I would wear going out to lunch with friends or even out to dinner. Nothing where you would be exerting yourself. No, I wouldn't wear polyester if I am going to be outside in the heat, or grocery shopping and pushing a cart around.

Barbara, I asked my daughter just now if she really wanted it. She got a bottle of Black Opium for Christmas from this same kid (his family), which she can't wear while in my house. I just let her smell the Channel #5 and she is okay with giving it away. I'll send it to you. Send me your info via messaging. Will probably wait till next week to send it since I'm on vacation again then and things may have quieted down in the mailing centers. I went back to work and got two more gifts I can't use. Perfumy hand lotion and Bailey's non-alcoholic truffles. The lotion is really strong, gave it to my daughter. The truffles I did try but they taste just like Bailey's Irish creme. lol Put them on the kitchen island, someone will eat them. One of my coworkers had perfume or some other strong scent on last night and I ended up having to use my inhaler, irritated my lungs even though I was wearing a 3 layer face mask. She is a nurse and should know better. There are two of them in my office and they both now sit in my pod of desks.

I don't get it, they were saying they thought the kids were being racist, which is funny as two of them have Mexican American parents.

This principal was so trying to CYA, he left it right out there where it got kicked.

Wonder what the 40% Hispanic kids will be wearing on July 4th.?
