Need book club food suggestions

June is my month to pick a book and host the meeting for my book club. There are ten of us and the hostess always serves snacks or a complete meal. We try to serve something that is representative of the book. For example; tea, crumpets, or shepherd pie for a book about Britain.

The book I chose is Windterdance by Gary Paulson. It's the hilarious true story of his experience running Alaska's Iditarod sled dog race.

The story involves dogs, moose, primitive checkpoints deep inside Alaska, ten long lonely nights in freezing temps just trying to survive the 1,150 mile sled race.

I have lots of dessert ideas but nothing for the main course. Moose stew or reindeer dogs come to mind but I have no way to get either thing and I'm not sure if I did, that anyone would eat it. I need something that is clever but not too foreign to the tastes of urban So. Calif. gals.

Some dessert ideas I've come up with so far are:

- Eskimo Pies (the ice cream bar)

- Puppy Chow (rice chex covered with melted peanut better, chocolate and powdered sugar)

- Baked Alaska (lots of prep needed for this)

Any other ideas??? The meeting isn't until June 30th.
