Memory quilt

Have this ready to take to get quilted, I used the star PP from "quiltville" and the rest made up as I went along, it ended up 50" square. It is for a friend of my DD her father passed away and I used his shirts.

Gilian, What a beautiful remembrance that will be for your daughter's friend. I have my DH's flannel pajamas and bathrobe put away waiting for a quilt to be made when I am ready. It's a lovely quilt.

It's always tough to loose a loved one, but your Grandpa sure had a nice, long run for his money, didn't he....all my family die before 65, I'm afraid... all except one grandmother who lived till 94...she's my one hope for longevity!!! If Grandpa wore ties, I have a wonderful book...Shirley Botsford's DADDYS TIES. In it are great ideas of memory type things to make with ties and, in many cases, sort of dress shirts....I see one on the cover that is composed of bowtie quilt blocks----the background looks to be shirting and the bow tie portions from tie material. I just love it, and only wish I still had my Dad's ties, but he's been dead since the 60s...I'd love one of these. There are also log cabin quilts, pillows, etc made with men's ties exclusively...and lots of other things. The book gives instructions on how to 'deal' with tie material...when to wash, when to cut, how to take apart, etc, plus all the ideas for using the ties when you're done.

Memory quilt ideas for baby shower

I hosted a baby shower for my sister a couple of years ago. As one of the shower activities, I wanted to make a quilt for the baby. I gave each guest a piece of fabric. Solid yellow. 8.5" square. Gave them fabric markers and had them write a message on there for the baby, to be made into a quilt. Told them to leave 1" margin all the way around. Had them sign their names, as the baby would know them. Made that into a quilt that was presented at the baby's christening a few months later. Since we didn't know if it would be a boy or girl, I used homespun plaids for the sashing, and small florals for the cornerstones. It was a boy, and his parents love plaid, so that was a good guess. The corner blocks served as the labels. In one corner, I put the baby's name, birth date, time & weight. Another corner, the date of the shower. Another corner, date of the christening. Last corner was my own block for the saying I wanted to write. And I put care instructions on the back, in case the quilt ever ends up in a dorm room. My sister told me that they plan to hang the quilt on the wall. I need to add a hanging sleeve. My sister does not sew much.

Donna, you did a great job designing the memorial quilt. I think the shadows really add so much to a tee shirt quilt. I'm sure your friend will cherish the quilt made in memory of his husband. How kind of you.

That brought tears. A friend made me one from my Mom's clothes and leftover fabrics. That is such a special thing and labor of love. You are lucky to have such good family to support you. Thank you for sharing it. Again, so sorry for your loss. Hope this brings you good comfort. The details and color/design are amazing!

Gillian you did a great job! I really like it a lot, you chose the design well. Margaret's friend will truly love it. She is really lucky to have this quilt. Wrapping up in it, will be like a hug from her Dad. I don't think I have one thing that belonged to my dad. What a thoughtful thing you did making this quilt!

Beautiful quilt. Are some of the shirts polyester and do you think that it makes a difference? We have bags of clothing of my FIL and there are jeans and then there are the thinner shirts he would wear for church. They are in the whites and light colors. I have questioned mixing them. Thanks. Lovely quilt.

Deanna: It's okay to mix cottons and blends, just be careful about your temperature on the iron. Poly's tend to slither around, so I don't LIKE using them when quilting, but this is a special circumstance. I wouldn't try mixing the denim with the light fabrics because the different weights of the fabrics won't work well together. I'm not saying it can't be done, just that it becomes very challenging.

Deanna!!! I only had about 7 or 8 shirts to work with and it wasn't easy, I would try stick with all denim or 100% cotton, I had flannel,corderoy,denim and 50/50 had to press seams open some were so thick.
