Greenhouse pictures....finally

Hi.

I apologie for taking so long to post some greenhouse pictures once again. May is such a hectic month trying to take care of my own business and work for my brother at his greenhouse. I should clone myself; except that would probably drive Bigbaby over the edge once and for all.

Bigbaby and I walked over to the greenhouses this morning and I snapped a few pictures.

Bigbaby and Lucy by the Begonias.

A Reiger Begonia.

Miscellaneous marigolds.

Joel with a 10 inch petunia basket. It's a single plant, a variety called Bubblegum.

Nancy's (Joels wife) Calla lily is in bloom.

A million bells basket.

Another tropical of Nancy's.

White fuchias in bloom.

An Echeveria with a waterdrop in the center.

A strawberry basket. Joel usually eats the ripe berries before the employees get there in the morning.

The pansies are moved outside.

Rascal, the greenhouse cat. He lives up to his name!

Lucy and Blossom, best buds.

Thanks for looking.

Ron

I really enjoy seeing your pictures everytime you post them. Beautiful flowers, and the calla lilies are especially georgeous. Cute pets, too.

WOW! Our nurseries don't even have their stock yet. I did manage to get a beautiful variegated elder the other day but no plants yet.

I love the million bells basket - pink and yellow together in the garden is lovely. Must look for Bubblegum petunias as well.

shamefully, I have NO places for sitting in the garden (not wishing to encourage idle offspring and their pals) - although I do have a timber coping round my beds which was always meant to be used as possible bench seats (similar to Paula's)....but was filled, within days of construction, with dozens of pots, seed trays, tools and other garden equipment, leaving just enough space for an elderly collie to poke it's nose into the plantings - which have overflowed onto every remaining inch of space. If pressed, I can produce a couple of folding seats, once the pots on the floor have been kicked aside....oh yeah, I have a chair (for me) in the greenhouse. At the allotment, the seating tends to be bits of timber balanced on breeze blocks or upturned pots ). I sometimes sit in the wheelbarrow too. The gardens are not places of rest but places of work. To relax, I go inside and loll on a sofa with a book.

LOL - it's only "color-coordinated" because I went out and bought a huge bag of 240 of those red solo cups at Costco for transplanting. It was super-cheap, and I plan to reuse them until they fall apart. All the other cups (purple, yellow, and white styrofoam) I just found in my cupboards, desparate for anything to use. The "trays" are old box lids, covered in plastic garbage bags to make them waterproof (I buy the garbage bags at costco too, they're my kitchen bags, and a box lasts me a really long time). The lower shelves (on the ground) are a mess of pots and gallon milk jugs holding water. I also have that heater, two bags of potting soil, and two 10 inch pots with dahlia tubers started in them littering up the floor (not enough light on the center shelves for the dahlias, I didn't think). Needless to say, there's not much room to actually "move" in there, but enough room for me to do what I need to (water and pot things up), if I'm careful. ;-) Once it's too hot for you to keep stuff inside, you can clean everything out, and then have a chance to get organized for next year, right? I'm trying to figure out how to turn this one into a really big dehydrator this summer...

This is what I do to irrigate, instead of dragging hoses. I use the black irrigation line. 500 feet of it is just over $30 at the big box store. It also comes in 800 ft and 1000 ft coils. I buy the garden hose connectors for each end. They just push on. They come with caps so you can close off the end of the line. Then I lay the tubing around ( on top of the ground) to all the trees and use a battery powered drill to drill a very small hole in the hoses, 2 on each side of the tree. Make the hole go all the way through so the tube will drain and not contain hot water. If the holes are quite small, you can water about 20 trees on one line. I set small rocks on top of the holes so the water goes downward instead of spraying all over. I gather all the ends of the separate lines into one place and attach them to the cheap 4 way turn valves (under $10) made for garden hoses. Then a garden hose goes from the faucet to the turn valve. Turn the water on, run it for about 4 hours. Go out and turn the valves to send water to the next line. You can buy a timer for the faucet so you don't have to be there to turn the water off. If you work, you can do one line of trees each morning, or evening. Turn it on, go to work, and the timer turns it off. Very cheap to do, very easy to install, and it will save you hours of work.

Thanks, Rb. That's a good suggestion about the mesh. The voles and moles don't usually go very deep with their burrows, so three or four inches might just do the trick. Interesting, with my mound, and with the hydrangeas in them, I've never had a problem with anyone eating the plants. Pretty remarkable considering the environment I'm creating for the critters. I see lots of signs of activity: they'll burrow all in the space, and even disturb the soil in some of the containers, but I don't think I've ever lost a single bud to them. I've seen hydrangeas on some poison lists and I remember seeing that the poisons of many plants are more concentrated in some parts of the plant. Sometimes I wonder if the buds, the bark and the roots might be more loaded with poison or loaded with something that tastes awful. I would think the critters wouldn't actually eat the stems, but maybe their burrowing would expose and disturb them. One thought I had was to just bury the stems a lot deeper than the few inches that you do. If I were to go down more than six inches, then the critters probably wouldn't create too much havoc with them. And after I posted last time, I realized that I could bury them inside my mound. Keep everything together. I may be trying something like that as an experiment. Thanks for your insights. Jen, good to see you. I've made a point of not doing anything to overwinter a planting of five Endless Summers for the past two winters. Last winter was a good test since they had become pretty established. The plants all got killed back to the ground, but, from the crown, I got a few flowers early in the summer.Very few, but still enough that I was happy. Better than years and years of never seeing even one flower from my Nikkos, All Summer Beautys, and Dooleys. And I would see a few blooms come along later in the season. I have not been able to see any flowering in the fall. Mine are in the shade and I don't deadhead them. Layering is a tried and true way to propagate. Easy, too. Taking cuttings in the middle of summer turns out to be a lot of work. You've got to keep them misted, keep them out of the sun, not let them be touching or you get rot..... I hope my fall cuttings work. I won't use it for many of my hydrangeas. I took a lot of cuttings in August, knowing that the plants had not yet set the buds for next years flowers by that time. But I couldn't do that on November 1 ( I don't think). I do know that I've cut back some Nikkos on September 15 and still been able to get buds to set, but would that be too early to take these fall cuttings should it work out? I've got a lot to think about. Good luck, everyone. Hay.

Oh my gosh!!! I want one of everything Ron! I have a fuchsia bowl and a petunia (2 different kinds) bowl hanging on my front porch! So I'm a goner for anything that grows in those beautiful bowls. The begonia's are so beautiful. I see some of those in my future. ~LOL~ I also have the orange calla lilies but they are just coming up here in So.California. They will bloom in July/August.

If I lived close to the greenhouse your brother and I would be on a first name bases!! He really should be proud of that greenhouse!!

Thanks so much for sharing,

Susan

Such a great selection! Here nothing spectacular in our greenhouses, but then this winter we will be lucky if anything makes it. But no snails, tomato worms, just mosquitoes and more. Too much standing water in the fields.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Ron. I, too, have been waiting for your greenhouse pictures. I love all the flowers, which seem to be exceptionally well cared for. I have bought most of my baskets from an Amish greenhouse for the same reason - the plants are loved and cared for. Can you tell me whether the Bubblegum petunia requires deadheading? It is lovely.

How beautiul they are.

I bought a pot of Regier Begonias the other day to put at the front of the house. After I took the wrapping all off, I found a ticket that stated that they must be in shade. We don't have a complete shady place to put them. Will morning sun hurt them?

Joel has been growing plants in his greenhouse since 1971; when he was a senior in high school. He knows what he's doing.
ivamae, the begonia should be okay with a few hours of morning sun.
