Good for you all and especially you Chris! Sounds like a real Com Garden. I have had plots off and on for 35 years, starting in Student Housing Gardens at UW-Madison. Here in Santa Barbara CA the city and a local non-profit manage 3 C.Gardens and numerous school and assisted living gardens. We have plans to increase the numbers and varieties of garden plot programs. We tried to get the city to mandate plots in larger new housing developments but got nowhere. Seedman

Yeah, this will never happen. But, not for the reasons you think. The sort of land elk need is now protected. Not for the beneficial ecological / environmental purposes, they have been prioritized for mega solar companies. Albany has put a target on the backs of Hudson Valley areas like Greene & Ulster Counties, specifically to clear cut vital habitat, forests, meadows, farmland and so on to make room for industrial scale solar farms that render the earth, dead, useless at the end of their roughly 25 year life-span. That's the future of NY State as long as Albany law-makers have their way.

My wife and I were looking in Upstate New York, near Sharon Springs, and even found a wonderful place in my hometown of Oneonta (Otsego County). If you want to live in a warm, friendly place with lots of wonderful people, it's the place to go. Unfortunately for me, my job in Nevada chose instead to move me to Seattle, of all places!
