My Home Tour competition has been revealed :)

I just discovered the web page for the home tour I am in (I am number 6 Bothell - click on the number on the left or on the map to get collection of pics). I think my kitchen can hold its own against the others on the tour - other people dressed theirs up with wine and cheese and orchids and the like for the photos while mine is kinda plain in that regard. I wish I was around for the tour so I could check out the other places but I will be out of town volunteering at junior high school youth camp.

muktowngal... Thank you (and others) for your complements. I think I'm around 480 varieties... a few duplicates, but still, under 500 total. The large garden in the panorama has most of the varieties in it... around 400. The neighbor...they moved in a year before us and the previous owners left them a few hosta. That S&S in the pic was a puny 1-eye and was not doing well. It's grown so much in the 5 years since we've been here. Almost all of their others were added around 2008-09. I gave them the Royal Standards in that pic, and a few others that are not in the photo. I plan to thin out a few of my duplicates and will probably give them some more, since they're willing takers! Both my neighbors are good about keeping a nice landscape and I'm thankful for that. My rear neighbor... not so much.

Cartegena can be a tough area, too. It's been almost 10 years since I was there, but there were tons of armed soldiers throughout the city. I don't think we would have felt comfortable going out on a tour of our own. We loved going partially through the canal - my brother-in-law; however, said it was like watching paint dry, but if he wasn't gambling, he wasn't happy anyway. My husband and I thought it was fascinating to watch our ship be boarded by the canal pilot and escorted to the eastern (but really westernmost) entrance of the canal. Did you know that the eastern entrance is more west than the western entrance? We also had the opportunity to visit the San Blas islands, home of the Cuna Indians - it was quite an eye-opener to see the sea-level islands. Helene

"How cool dilly dally! Does your bathroom have the original toilet & sink? Was the sink a wall hung one? And are the shower doors original or were they added later? There is a curtain rod above the shower doors and we can't figure out why there are both." No, I checked the date on the toilet when I was looking at the real estate and it was replaced in 1982. (You can look under the tank lid to see the date stamp.) I'm not sure about the sink. It is one that hangs off the wall though. The tub I know is original. It is the same as the one you show with the wider ledge in the middle. My shower rod was installed so that the curtain hung inside the tub. I moved it so the curtain hangs outside. No shower doors. (Thank gawd. I hate them.) I don't think shower doors would be original with a tub like that. My tub is grody. No shine left on it and it always looks dirty. I've looked into replacing it but there is no way to get it out without damaging tiles I was told and the size is so odd that a replacement to fit exactly is impossible. I may have to buy one of those acrylic tub recovers to get a decent tub that looks clean. The original "shower head" was called a 'Victorian' I found out. It was like a stick on a hinge from the wall, low, about waist high. You moved it up and tiled the hinged head to shower. Or you moved it straight down to fill the tub. I liked it. I had to replace it when it broke and could not find anything like it. They don't make them any more. I had to redo the whole works adding separate faucet and showerhead and controls. You probably have a built in ironing board in the kitchen. Most of them end up getting converted into spice cabinets. Mine still had the original wood ironing board in it and although I do iron a lot I did not want to iron on an old stinky wood thing. The built in wall ironing boards that they seel nowdays to do not retro fit into these old ones. I made mine into a spice cabinet by adding little shelves. I'm glad I did it this way. It's one thing to be a purist and try to preserve the ingerity of a vintage home but if it means wasted space with a non functioning widget - it goes. There is also a thing built into the wall in the basement that I had thought was an old mangle in the laundry room at first. (They were popular in that era.) There was a slit in the wall by it. There was a built-in long table in the rec room by the slit on the other side of the wall. I figured out that it was made to hold a roll of kraft paper to pull through the slit to use as a disposable table cover. I know they still sell rolls of table kraft paper like this for restaurants, so I could use it but I never throw dinner parties in my basement and don't have kids who do crafts. "The original must have been one with long pipes." I still have the original. It did not work when I bought the house. I found out when I took it apart to repair, that the pipes do not create the sound. There was a sort of xylophone thingy inside that made the actual sound. The pipes were for decoration only. If I had not been able to repair it, I was going to get a wireless chime to install elsewhere in the house and use the alcove for holding a decorative vase or something. "It's when you cut or break it that it releases fibers and causes problems." True. Some people do not know about asbestos tile and try to chisel it up without proper proceedure. About the crib bumper legislation (which was introduced last year and signed into law this past May) -- it prohibits the manufacture, sale, and distribution of padded crib bumper pads (and inclined sleepers). However, I don't believe that even the "distribution" provision applies to homemade, home-sewn crib bumpers, which is the case above. So parents and parents-to-be need to educate themselves, and if Grandma wants to sew something, suggest something else. Bumpers aside, I very much appreciated her not overly decorated son's room and the use of furniture from elsewhere in the house on a temporary basis, until her son is older. I can't stand the recent social media trend of hyper-decorated "nurseries" which have the lifespan of a fruitfly, and then the blogger/influencer redoes the room when the kid becomes a toddler, again as a preschooler, again a few years later, etc.

I like yours the best out of all of them! Absolutely fabulous! I didn't know you were up in Bothell. I used to live in Mukelteo (it was a while ago and am not even sure I am spelling it correctly any more).

I agree - your kitchen is well worth the tour. It has a soft classic elegance that looks like something is really about to happen. It reminds me of the beauty of a ballgown full of movement and grace, just waiting to show off. Good luck! Thanks for sharing.

#1,5,6,11,12 are all very nice. I should be so lucky. I love your kitchen, great place to cook and love those cork floors. I really like that 'lake' appliance that #1 has attached to it's window too.

You have every right to be proud of your kitchen. It made a huge impression on me when I began lurking here. May I ask if there is any prize involved in the competition? I view it as a sort of "Beautiful Baby Contest", none would be rejected by me! But yours takes the prize, of course.

I like the #10 before kitchen better than the after!

Your kitchen and number 11 are nice pairings. Both modern and have a little asian influence. But really, it's a nice selection of styles to look at. For the unique factor, there are a couple, but I think you're up there at the top with your fossils. And the granite choices...yawn...you win :oP

Yours is wonderful! I love your fossils and they are just perfect for where you live. How fun for you to be in the tour. It's really nice that they chose a variety of styles.

I have never "met" anyone from Bothell, but the city sure brings back memories. When I was about 10, my sister and her hippie-farmboy husband moved to Bothell. He milked cows for a living. I got to spend a month with them one summer and had the best time of my life. Their house had acres and acres of meadow behind it. Now I wonder if anyone ever bought it and remodeled it.

Thanks everyone. I like mine and number 12 from what I can see in the picture.

LOL houseful, I don't know that there are any farms in bothell anymore - if you are picturing us living in farmland its not like that at all - its all single family homes and apartments for miles and miles around me. Bothell encompasses a large area though - we have friends that also have a bothell address that it takes 50 minutes to drive to.

hey lynne, thanks for the compliments: wood is maple with butternut stain in the kitchen, and cherry with Cairrage Black stain in dining. Granite is Capella aka Golden Ray.

I had no idea Bothell was that large! My sister verified that over 20 years ago, there were plans to sell that farm, so that house was probably destroyed. :>(

Your kitchen is wonderful. Every detail contributes to the beauty as a whole, such as the pulls, how the colours of the cabs work in unison with the granite, the stools and the pendants. All are just perfect. You have a great eye!

Thanks mystery. I have maple in a similar stain in my master bath with Crema Bordeaux granite, which also has a lot of movement.

I hope you win, it is really spectular.

Hello fellow Eastsider!

Congratulations! Your kitchen looks stunning and will stand out from the rest!

Houseful - The big white barn you used to be able to see so clearly from 405 is still there. It went through transitions as the Bothell campus of UW and now is a restaurant serving the business park that surrounds it. I think it is a historic monument now and can't be taken down. Thankfully! There are too few of those old beauties around anymore!

I just got home from junior high camp and the tour had about 1 hr left. I sat upstairs and listened which was pretty interesting LOL one guy was just ripping on the backsplash over and over - honestly it was pretty comical becuase everyone else just loved it. (he didn't like that it was rough in texture)

I didn't win any of the awards - the contractor said house #1 on the tour won almost all the awards and he thought house #12 won one award. However he did say that a lot of people were saying they liked ours the best. Also I wouldn't doubt it if #1 was 2x the price or more of our remodel (drool, look at the bathroom for house 1 - I think thats bigger than my bedroom!)

Anyway I am happy to report that nothing was broken or stolen (that I have seen so far) which was my main concern.

According to the contractor the number 1 thing people liked (or at least commented on) was the cork and number 2 was the backsplash. Strange but in the hour I was upstairs I only heard one comment on the granite.

Looks like #1 was on the NKBA magazine cover. I wonder if any of the winning kitchens were designed by the homeowner. I told my contractor he'll have to hire me as a part time design consultant now. :)

Mystery - it was probably the view that got them RE #1. I did like it, and #12 was my 2nd choice. But I still love yours as the traditional kitchen that looks useful yet still quite the elegant lady it is. IMHO it's #1, or #2 if running against the extreme of #1. Congratulations on being included in the running. Do you know how the other non-winners placed?

Nope, actually when the contractor said "house number one won all the awards" I am beginning to think that he was speaking of the NKBA awards - since I did the design rather than a NKBA professional I am sure they would never give awards to mine. I don't see anything about awards on the website for the tour I was in so perhaps there were no awards for this tour specifically.

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall for more than one hour of the tour - it was pretty fun. There were a couple things I wanted to run down and correct the contractor on (for example someone asked him if my cooktop was induction and he said "no its electric") but technically I was not supposed to be in the house during the tour so I didn't run over and correct him.

Looks great! I really didn't see too many there that were that done up - and yours is really well lit, seems very natural while some of the others seem a bit more like they're studio lit and not really home-y.

Yeah, that would have been fun. Not to keep playing 20 questions, but don't they have a write-up on the homes? He should have known that your cooktop was induction. Then again, it may not have mattered since it wasn't a part of the NKBA design. Still looks great to me...

Mike - my thoughts exactly. The others appeared much too "showy".
