Border or no border?

I am trying to finish up some UFO's this year. My Baltimore Album top is almost ready to baste for hand quilting. I was thinking of adding a green floral border.

What do you think- border or no border?

I vote no border, it just doesn't go with the applique to me. I think a border like the sashing would look better and go with the quilt nicely.

I soooo admire people who can do all that handwork and create such intricate designs!

I'd also leave the border off and let your work speak for itself. You already have what seems to be a border outside the blocks.

Just beautiful! Can we see the whole top?

I think it'd look better without the border, but that's just because I like the cleaner lines with cantilever edges. If I did a border, then I'd do one of the liners with the tile borders.

I think bordering the quilt would give it a finished appearance. Since you have color running right to the edge, another option would be to have a white-on-white border the same width and fabric as the sashing and then a binding of one of the bright colors. This wouldn't add very much in size, but would frame the quilt. It is an adorable quilt, by the way. Very beautifully done.

Well thanks everybody, I do appreciate the input. I am putting on the border, not only do I really like, it, but I think spatially, it's needed. I'd imagined this top w/ the thin brown border it has now, but it feels too close in width to the beige border holding the corner squares. So I feel that proportionwise (?) it needs a wider outer border to anchor it. That's my story & I'm stickin' to it! Am piecing the last 2 borders. Will post updates when done. I just put in the Horus Art Cristalli tile in biscuit and I love it. I am awaiting the grout (which I will do in a matching color). I have honey/toffee maple cabinets in a Shaker style door, Crema Astoria granite (a creamy granite with white, black, and garnet areas, and with some subtle but not overpowering gray/silver movement). Even though I love clean lines, I chose this tile over the Tiffany (which is a straight subway) because it has a handmade appearance (the lines are kind of wavy, which go with the movement in the granite). It also has a little sparkle, which my granite does as well. I did not do a border or accent in my backsplash; I used only the HA Cristalli subways. I don't have a big kitchen - it's 10x10, only 15" from cabinet to counter. I chose to leave it plain as I want the focus on the granite and not the tile. I am so happy that I did! When I get a chance I will post some pictures.

I am speechless at the beauty of that quilt. It's amazing, and something I won't ever attempt. That said, I think any printed border would just cheapen a quilt of that quality. It looks like an unnecessary afterthought.

If you want a border on it to 'finish' it off, it shouldn't detract any attention at all from your handiwork. It should draw attention to it. Make it plain, like a picture frame, in a fabric to repeat one of the solids in your quilt.

I'm not sure what to think. Do the traditional Baltimore Albums have borders? At the very least I think the binding should be the same red as the sashing to kind of finish it off. I also think that gorgeous appliqued border needs more room to float. You could add a border of the same background fabric to accomplish that. Beautiful quilt...can't wait to see it done.

I agree with no border on this one. It distracts the eyes from the beautiful applique.

I'd say no border, but red binding would be perfect! It's just beautiful.

I also say no border, but I'm wondering how it would look to duplicate the sashing.....just a thought. Some don't need a visual, but I do, so I don't know if this is a good idea or not.

I vote no border. It takes away from the quilt, rather than adding to it. (So says the "queen of borders",LOL)

I agree no border please, bindings either in red or green (from the edging floral applique).

You do exquisite work, I hope you document all these quilts, I expect they'll be around a VERY long time!

I agree with the others. Your beautiful work speaks for itself.How talented you are & what a lot of loving work went into your quilt.A red binding sounds good, but with your talent,we know you'll pick a lovely finish. Please share pics when you can.Pat

This is a beautiful quilt!!!

I also would say no border - but I agree with many others that bnding in the same color as the sashing would be nice. I think I would make the binding wider than the usual 1/4" or 3/8" - making it the same width as the sashing might be interesting. The red would make a nice frame for this work of art.
