My gentle giant........

son, Brian has been gone three years today. He was a big man with the sweetest, gentlest personality. I;ll spend some of today going through the memory box I made for him out of a pretty heart-shaped velvet candy box. I'll re-read the cards and news paper clippings, and have a good cry. I do know he is in a so much better place, and is free of pain. I DO KNOW I'll see him again someday. Rest in peace, my sweet gift from God.

Three years is not so long to lose a loved one, and I know it is still so fresh in your heart. I am sorry for this terrible loss in your life and send you a big hug.

My Gentle Giant is a lovely rose. The growth rate is medium for a HT. Here it is disease free...no BS or Mildew. We have little mildew pressure here and no rust that i know of. In my garden it receives shade from 3pm on. I fertilize with horse manure and manure tea. The bush is well fertilized with the above as it pushes out large blooms. The bloom cycle is approx. 3-4 per cycle. But, please note that I live in Western Washington so I can't say how it would do for you...give it a try. Good luck Jeannie

Get the dog on the NILIF program real quick(nothing in life is free. Below is an article describing how to handle this I copied and pasted this from one of my training links When dealing with food (resource) guarding Forget just putting the bowl down for him. Make him sit. Make him wait a minute longer. Put a very small portion of his regular dinner in his bowl. Hold on to the bowl for him to eat out of. Does he eat with your hands still on the Vessel of Chow? Very good. Before he finishes what's there, slowly pull it away. Don't get into a wrestling match over it though, if he starts to protest, use your newest command, "Trade". Give the bowl back with more food in it. This time you can put it down for him. You want him to realize that you'll never let him starve, but you reserve the right to remove his dish. Keep this up, every day, just this, until you no longer get a resistance when you remove the bowl. On to the next phase ... You follow the new routine, making him go through a bit of a hassle before he gets his full dinner again, but this time, instead of leaving him to eat in peace after, you put your hand on his head, and follow his movements, keeping it in place. Does he give you dirty looks, but continue eating anyway? This is good. Move your hand, just stroking his head. This in itself is a reward activity, but it may take him some time to realize that it's okay, you aren't going to steal his dinner away for good. Once he's used to you petting him while he's eating, and he's relaxed in your company, the next step is to remove his dinner. That's right. Do what he's been afraid you'll do, right from the beginning. Take it, and turn your back on him. Put one of those drool-worthy treats I mentioned earlier right on top of his dinner, then give it back. Aha. See? Like "Trade", but you didn't give the command. Keep it up. By using patience and persistence, rewarding the good behavior, and employing the "work for it" rules, you can turn your resource guarding dog into a dog you can pet while he's eating. Just remember ... just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Everybody deserves to eat in peace.

You lost McDuff about the same time my little cat Sunny went. (He died on Thanksgiving morning.) As things went, I guess I was "lucky" in that I was able to spend several hours with him on my lap, talk to him, pet him and hopefully make his death more comfortable for him. I guess it made me feel a lot better too. I tend to get so very attached to animals it's tough to lose them. I haven't had too many different animals. It goes a long time between them. I keep thinking it's better to not have them and go through the pain, but then when you balance out the joy of having them, I guess it's still worthwhile. Duffy must be getting HUGE by now! I remember the picture of him you posted. I suspect you can't duplicate that picture today! :)

Can you plant it in a cage of hardware cloth to thwart the voles? Just 4 sides and a bottom, wired with twist ties to make an open top box. The roots can grow thru it and at worst the critters will only do a little root pruning. Methinks you need to do something, because now THEY know where the good stuff is and will bring their friends and relatives to the feast. -Babka

My heart goes out to you, and I know this will be a difficult day for you. Hugs!

In 2 days, it will be 5 years since my son left, so I fully understand the pain. I also find comfort in knowing that I will be with him again someday.

I, too, know you will see him again. These anniversaries are hard, but that thought is something to hold onto.

Thinking of you,Dotmom. It has been eleven years since I posted the heart wrenching message that my darling granddaughter was gone (traffic accident), then the following year, her mother (my daughter) died of cancer. I still have trouble getting through the birthdays and anniversaries of their deaths. It helps to remember the smiles and the good times and I know that is what you will be doing with your son today. Please know that many of us here at the KT are sending comforting thoughts across the miles to you. I hope you can feel that! (((Dotmom)))

Dotmom, Wanda, and Mamatoad and all of those who have lost a loved one, my heart and prayers go out to you. I cannot imagine your pain, nor say anything to help the situation other than I will be thinking of you and praying for your loved ones. I wish I could give you a real hug, but a cyber hug will have to do.

Dotmom, I am so very sorry that Brian is not longer physically here with you on earth. But I too know that he is still with you, and that he lives on in your heart. Bless you and yours.

Cherish the memories you have, together with the time you had with your son Dotmom. It's hard to accept, and probably one of, if not the worst thing a parent can go through. Take care my friend. Thinking of you.

And to everyone who has lost someone close, I hope you too can recall the good times, cherish the memories and have a laugh or two also over a good time. I'm sure they'd like you to be in good spirits rather than saddened, even though it's so hard to accept at times.

Thanks, KT friends. I had my good cry, read all of the lovely messages in the sympathy cards, He was loved, liked and so respected by a lot of people. Yes, i think he visits, as there have been things happen that can't be explained.
To Wanda and Mamatoad, I'm sorry for loss. It is a special kind of pain to lose a child.
One lingering saddness is, his wife, in CA, just doesn't seem to want to stay connected with us. We've made it clear how much it means that she gave him so much happiness. They married late in life and had six years, and I believe they were the happiest 6 years of Brian's life. We'll always be thankful for that. I have stopped calling, she never returns voice mail nor emails, but I still sent her Christmas card and birthday card with a short note.
Again thanks for the comforting words.

It may be just too difficult for her, Dot. They were probably the six best years of her life, too, since Brian sounds like he was a superb individual. Try not to be hurt by it. She may just feel the need to move on, and that is a part of life. Although a mother's love never ends, does it?
