Which Stainless Steel Sink did you purchase?

Hello!

I recently installed custom white cabinets and have new quartz countertops in Raven coming soon. Now onto the sink. Since I have Stainless appliciances I've decided to go with a stainless steel sink. In the past, I've had both ceramic and SS sink and liked them both.

I'm curious which sink did you purchase? Are you happy with your decision? I was shocked by the Franke prices but know nothing about other manufacturers. I need a 30-33 inch, one bowl, undermount sink.

I've looked at sinks from Blanco, Kraus (on overstock), Moen, Kohler. I know the thicker 16 the better. But I've seem thicker without a very polished interior (like Franke's 18 gauge) that didn't appeal to me. It looked like the stainless you would get on a cheap toaster.

Any advice (and photos!) would be so much appreciated!

I learned about Kraus sinks on this site. They are great reviews on here, and I found the cost for my SS 30" farmhouse very reasonable on expressdecor.com. i haven't installed it yet, but it is gorgeous!! I will be posting some pix next weekend once the cabinets are in!

You may fine that single-bowl, undermounted sinks run a bit smaller in overall dimension. This one is 28" wide. It is from Soci and our granite fabricator represented the line. Other measurements are 16" x 10" deep and 15 guage.

After 21 years of use, I am replacing a white Franke composite sink, as I am removing worn laminate countertops and replacing them with quartz. I have agonized over the choice of a new sink and have done much research about them. While I love my current sink, it has developed many small cracks around the disposal drain presumably from hot oil poured into the sink. You cannot feel the cracks, they are not raised, but there is a web of them all around the drain. Of course, this has been after many years of heavy duty use. Since Franke no longer makes granite composite sinks,(which has me curious as to why they discontinued them), I am down to a choice of SS, Silgranite II, or Iron coated with enamel. After much research, most chefs and other serious cooks recommend SS sinks. In fact, many of the current sink offerings for residential use are channeling the sharp angled configurations of restaurant SS sinks. On line reviewers and the salesperson at my local plumbing supply have experienced staining and chipping with cast Iron sinks. The salesperson told me that many companies will replace them if they do chip or stain, but they only send you a new sink, the owner is responsible for the cost of installation. Some reviewers on line talk about scratches in Silgranite sinks, especially on the darker colors. One magazine editorial that reviewed sink materials even included a picture that was taken of a showroom sink that had a scratch in the bottom that would not come out when the editor tried to remove it while in the store. From my on-line research, the cracking with Silgranite seems to have been only during transport and installation, however people have written about scratches that occurred during use. Missing from the comments on this site is the type of cooking being done by those offering their opinions. There is a big difference in experience with kitchen gear between a person who makes light meals for one or two people versus a gourmet cook who executes complex multi-course meals for many guests. As for myself, the utility of a sink is a more important consideration than how it looks. If I am in the middle of preparing a complex meal, I do not want to worry that I might damage my sink if I lob a heavy skillet or pot into it!

I got a white-coated grid for my white Kohler Mayfield sink a couple months ago. This is a big single sink we use for prep, esp. for processing veg. Working out a routine for using and cleaning it has been a bit of a challenge, but when we need it now, we really need it and are confident using it. This one has an opening in middle so I can access drain to remove loose veg flotsam, such as broccoli leaves. I have to put an extra inch or two of water into the sink to wash veg from garden that sits on grid, but it's wonderful to have all that sand and gunk sink to bottom while the veg is resting on the rack. (Unlike our old cast iron sink, this sink is very flat on bottom, so we have to throw around some water to wash out the sand when finished. So nice to have the veg remain above the sand.)

It's not even so much that they blend altogether, it's just that as you get more of them, none but the deepest or freshest ones really stand out. And that, doesn't last long. The first scratches and dings on anything are REALLY noticeable to me, but over time, they don't register unless I'm looking for them or hadn't noticed them before. I say this being somewhat OCD, and EXTREMELY detail-oriented. The sink scratches (beyond the first few months), really and truly don't jump out at me in the least. For the alcohol spray, I use somewhere around a 50-50 mix, maybe 40 (alcohol)-30 (water), and then add enough drops of essential lavender oil for it to smell "right" without being overpowering (that really is a personal preference, though lavender oil does have anti-bacterial properties on its own, too). Same thing with the alcohol, I start with the 40-50% alcohol and then adjust up or down (esp since I'm usually topping off a spray bottle that is not completely empty to start with). I like to use enough to discern the alcohol (by smell) but not so much that it chokes me when sprayed! Speed of evaporation/wipe-ability is also an indicator for me that my proportions are good. Play around with it and over time you'll get a sense for rough proportions that work best for you.

I have the Ruvati single bowl sink. Pros: It's big and holds a lot of dishes. It's sturdy and insulated well enough for me. I like the ledge for accessories. Cons: It has a flat bottom, so I chase food around the sink with the sprayer trying to get food particles down the drain. It has tight corners and hard to clean. The colander has wood, so I'm not sure how long that will last and it has large holes and is open on each end. That prevents you from using it for anything small, like straining spaghetti. I suppose you could use it for larger cut vegetables. I personally have it on the ledge and use it to set my liquid soap bottle, scrubbies and to hang my dishcloth to dry on the edge. I sometimes rinse my flatware and place in there prior to loading the dishwasher. I bought an after market, fine mesh colander that expands to fit the ledge and I store it in my cabinets. The grid for the bottom of the sink I thought was a good idea when I bought the sink. I hate it. The space between grids is too large to prevent anything from falling through. It gets food gunk on it, so I would be constantly scrubbing it and have to take it out to clean the sink. I don't use it anymore. If I could have a do-over, I would not purchase it again. You spend a lot of time at the sink, so allow enough in your budget to get a sink that will make using it less of a chore.

I just received my Kraus 32" SS undermount sink from Overstock.com. The sink is beautiful. I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the sink and the price was fantastic. It won't be installed until the middle of June so I won't really know how it will be. But it looks and feels fantastic. I looked at the more expensive sinks but the high cost made me look at the Kraus and Overstock's price made the final decision. It was delivered in three days and was packed perfectly. I am very happy with my purchase.

I am trying to decide between a Franke worktop with built in compost container and colander and a Julien worktop model 4081 - great looking with a raised back and holders for knives, scrubbers, etc. I've received some positive feedback re the Julien 16 gauge, but have the same concrns as donnaamy re the finish. Franke seems shiny while Julien not so much and I'm planning on chrome faucets. Any thoughts?

It sounds like lilybean2 and I have the same sink. I agree with her on the looks and quality. Mine is not installed yet either. I purchased it from expressdecor.com for $318 total.

I probably ordered lilybean's exact sink; it's sitting unopened in the garage; first purchase is here! I would have happily bought any 16 gauge sink by Kraus, Franke (what I had in the last house), Ticor, or a few others. I wanted a traditional radius, as square-y things are not my look, and an offset drain. Many would have made me happy, and >$400 was perfect!

A lot of people on here like Ticor. Check them out at overstock.com & galaxytoolsupply.com. That is what I am planning on buying for my sink. They are much cheaper than Elkay

I think that it's all about what works for you, the scope of you project, and your budget.

We ended up with a Franke that we love. I really had my heart set on a Kraus, though. DH wanted the Franke because he could "touch and test it before it came home."

Julien. Love it. Have chrome faucet and soap dispenser. Sink definitely not as shiny as the chrome, but that has never once bothered us.

I have an Oliveri. I love this sink. My granite installer
uses this brand but before I agreed I did a search and
liked what I learned. You can have one in any shape or
style made. Mine is an undermount.

We used MRDirect Inc. for just a standard double bowl 16 gauge with center drain. They have all kinds of styles.

Thank you everyone! It's refreshing to hear many postive comments. Doesn't sound like anyone is unhappy with their purchase. I too want to touch and feel the sink before purchase but hard to pass up the great internet deals. Off to shop...

I have the Franke GNX11028 because I really wanted that corner drain. Love that feature. It not only makes it easier to wash things, but leaves more room down below in the cab. I got it thrown in with my appliances.

Kohler Stages 45. Love my sink. I do need to tell you that I considered an Oliveri, as Boxer shows. The sinks are beautiful IRL. I went w/ the Stages for it's versatility.

I have a Franke Orca. Love, love, love it. I bought it especially for its ledge that allows me to have a drain grid on the right-hand side. I always keep it there to dry hand-washed items and slightly damp plastics from my dishwasher. I can soak large items flat even with the right-hand grid in place. If I ever need to wash anything walrus-sized, easy enough to remove the grid.
