just hate the counters and backsplash

Looking at a new house. We like the whole kitchen except the dark granite countertops and tile backsplash. How complicated would it be to change them out for marble (carrara)? Can this be accomplished without damaging the cabinets? Any guess as to how much it would cost (not counting the new counters).

How exciting you found a great house! Don't let those counters stand in your way. Changing counters is not complicated at all. There shouldn't be any damage to the cabinets.

My Carrara cost $50/sf installed, I am in metro Detroit. You might want to do a search on the cost of marble, I know there have been some threads recently.

Yeah, it's more important that you found your dreamhouse. All I can tell you is that when I had estimates done to get a new granite countertop and have my old laminate tops ripped out I had four estimates ranging from $250.00 - $415.00. HTH. They haven't done it yet but they better not ruin the cabinets, but as always, you sign away their responsibility for damage on the dotted line.

I wish I would have done it earlier! I admire your gumption to get what you want so you can enjoy it now.

I have to agree with you and say the backsplash needs to go. Don't worry,these things happen. We tried to keep our tiled kitchen floor, but once the granite went in, we knew it had to go so our carpenter ripped out the old floor after the cabinets were in and put down a new one. We are thrilled with the new floor. We have New Venetian too and we love it. When it came to the backsplash we wanted to granite to be the star and have a more subdued backsplash. Yet I wanted some interest there because I will be looking at it a lot so I added simple off white subway tiles with a bead detail. I added a little color with a tumbled onyx frame detail over the range. I think the NVG looks great with your cabinets.

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

I like your backsplash. I really like it! .And your kitchen is a classical beauty with those beautiful stacked cabinets and the gray, greige counters. Try painting the walls first, if you still detest the backsplash then think about ripping it out. I do think you will wind up loving your backsplash when the paint color has changed and you start living in your space. You kitchen is a beauty! Here are kitchens similar to yours.. soooo pretty just like yours. Notice the paint color is more gray and less beige... Mayble look for a warm gray.

That’s really helpful. In googling your material I came across something called Chip It by Sherwin Williams that apparently breaks the mix of colors into swatches that correspond to their paints. If you are looking for new tile, this could help you get the color right. By far the easiest thing to do is change your mind. Just live with it a while and if the hate persists, hire someone else to do the demo.
