Freeze warnings tonight

It's snowing as I write this. High temp today is supposed to be in the 40s, dropping into the 20s tonight. I hope this won't kill off the developing apples, but I'm not optimistic. This is what happened last year, and we lost the whole crop.

Anyone else a tad chilly this morning?

I heard the wind howling all night here on Long Island. Possible freeze tonight (Sunday) and Monday night too. I already planted my tomators and potatoes and some flower seeds. Hope they'll be allright. The one thing I will do is put my container plants inside both nights.

Someone told me to soak your plants with cold water as the sun rises in the early morning, and it should help save your plants from frost damage. I don't know how true it is, I've never tried. We have mature fully leafed out maples all around our house, where the majority of my plants are, their canopy should and usually does protect my plants from frost, so I'm not too worried about my perennials. Even so, I may get up and look outside, and soak the plants if necessary. None of my annuals have been planted out, so they're all in the garage. Not taking any chances on $100 worth of annuals getting fried. It'll be another couple weeks before they get planted anyway, so hopefully no more of this frost nonsense. Karen

It was 28 here yesterday morning. My geraniums from DD spent the night indoors. Tomorrow night we are in another freeze warning. We've been in the deep freeze since last November and I am getting darn sick and tired of it! We have one or possibly two nice days like in the 60's and then a cold front moves in and back to 50.

I find the hostas in pots handle the cold nights badly. I think it is because the roots (and whole plant) get cold. If the pot is not in contact with the ground, it gets even colder. Smaller pots do worse than big ones. So, the ones on wire shelves are not in contact with any massive like the ground or concrete balcony are likely more vulnerable to cold (and heat) damage. Larger objects have more thermal inertia, in that it takes longer (more exposure) to get hot or cold. Picture a gallon of water in the freezer vs a single pocket in an ice cube tray.

Smidgeon of snow some places near here last evening, this morning.

Didn't bring flats of seedlings into the barn last night ... better do it tonight, as forecast 1 degree of frost.

Disgusted with self that, with ground worked up, didn't get more seeds planted last week.

Rain and chilly forecast for most of this week.

Snow a couple of days ago, then had two nights of mid 20's so don't know what the trees look like. They haven't even bloomed yet, neither have the lilacs. Would love to see spring and/or summer soon, but then will be too hot.
