Census Workers Are Coming

I hope you filled out your census form when you received it earlier this year. I know I did. Bec ause if you didn't, a Census Worker will show up on your doorstep anytime from May 1 to July 10. I hate the expense caused by non-responders. And I resent the Census Dept sending me three letters. One to announce the form was coming, another with the form, and a third saying my form hadn't been received yet, but thanking me if I had mailed it bck recently. Heck, I mailed mine back the same day I got it-using the postage-paid enveLOpe provided. So if you didn't fill Your out, shame on you!

I mailed my form in and they still came knocking on my door. What a waste of tax money.

The questions on the form asked about who was living at the residence on April 1st even though they mailed the forms out weeks earlier causing some respondents to wait until after April 1st in order to answer correctly. Apparently they did not enter the info into their records and now are sending workers out to visit the later responders.

By our own choice we get our mail delivered at the post office, not @ our home. When we did not receive a census form I asked the Post Master about it. He informed me that in our situation the P.O. was required to return the census form rather than put it in our mailbox. Thus, we will have to have a census worker come to our home to complete the form. He said that it seems that this is a more expensive way of doing things, but perhaps the Census Bureau had very valid reasons for doing so.

I am hoping they can catch us @ home... I will be glad to complete the form!

I was so happy! No more hostas to plant! I could do something else with my weekend. DH wanted to stop by the farmers market; who knew someone would still have hosta for sale? I got a gigantic Blue Angel that was so pot bound I spent 30 minutes untangling roots. The leaves were all still green; I think it was overnighting in a greenhouse. Talk about throwing them on the driveway! I put in a new bed, got it in the ground along with a small Regal Splendor and told them they had 48 hours before the temperature would be 25 F, so deal with it. Got two more (Great Expectations and Stained Glass) that are still in pots waiting til next Saturday to plant. I'll bring them in at night during this weeks cold snap. They'll get three days before the next freeze. So that gets my total up to 64. Any advice about late planting is appreciated.

There is nothing the regular census asks that scares me. The government already has access to all the answers to the questions asked. Actually I could probably answer those questions about some of the posters on this forum given all the information some of you post about yourselves. I am simply annoyed at the redundant questions and the ridiculous categorizing of race. The idiots who came up with the questions don't seem to have any grasp of the difference between race and ethnicity. I don't believe there is a way to get an accurate count the way they are going about it. I mean they are walking around parks counting homeless people. That group count changes every day. I don't mind the census so much as the waste of taxpayer dollars to run t the way they are doing it. In answer to the argument that we need the census to provide services ,hospitals,schools etc. why don't they just audit those services and see how many people they actually serve and turn away. That would be a more accurate figure than a head count. For example you could have a neighborhood that has lots of school aged children. The knee-jerk reaction is that more classrooms would be needed. But if many of those children in that neighborhood were home schooled or in private school then that would not necessarily be true. Much better to count the classrooms and the student populations of the schools. You can't plan hospitals on population alone, you need to know how much of that population actually uses the local hospital and what they use it for. That leaves the only real reason for a head count to be the ability to buy congressional seats and siphon government money for pet projects. I refused to fill out the American Community Survey because it was downright invasive but I don't have a problem with the census other than it's dumb.

We had a fellow come to the door the other night and said he was working for the Census, had the official badge etc. He told us, they were just verifying the physical addresses...I thought this guy was a real jerk..1st my DH asked him to come in and he said, they weren't allowed but in the same breath followed my DH in and sat down....We told him what he needed to know and helped him with a couple of other addresses and he punched them in his "toy"....He proceeded to tell us, we wouldn't believe how much they are paying him to do this job???And he gets paid hourly not by "house or head count"...He told us next year we'd be getting the official census paper work in the mail....The funny thing, he only put in our physical address but we get all our mail through a box at the PO...There's going to be more work at the PO making sure the people get their mail and probably a lot of people that won't be counted..... I think, what this fellow was doing would be a neat job if you liked to walk and talk to people.... Good luck with your test...

It's the GOVERNMENT, people-- the government BUREAUCRACY. You're not really supposed to be able to decipher it! Just think about when you filed your tax forms this year--how long did it take you to understand some of the new rules? (And I'm not talking to the people who took it to H&R Block). Really, some of you are acting ridiculous. What do you think "verify" means? Have you never had to verify your name and address when contacting a utility company or your credit card company? You've all been reading too many scare stories about identity theft. Nobody is going to steal your identity and open up 100 credit-card accounts on the basic info that the census people are supposed to ask you. And if you should happen to get that caller who is really a scam artist and asks you for your bank account number, then you hang up. But just do your civic duty--help the census work! Help tell the government where they need to put funding for your state! I don't get some of you: You filled out a form and perhaps talked to someone at the front door, but you won't take 10 minutes to complete the process? And, from Lowspark's example, these are the questions that make you think it's some con man, or that this is so intrusive and a waste of your valuable 10 or 20 minutes? Really, I think the Oprah show and even this chat board can wait a few minutes. This sort of questioning is suspicious? Did you fill out the form correctly? What is your name? Did you fill out the form? What is your address? My god! I can go to the reverse-directory at my library and get this info in 10 seconds! And anybody wanting to plan to burglarize your home and wondering if you live alone can just sit on your block for a couple of hours and figure that out. Are you also peeking out your curtains to make sure this isn't happening? There are some bad apples in every bunch, but pls, use your intellect. (And when you take a trip on a plane, when the check-in clerk asks you if you packed your bag yourself, does that make you feel as if they've intruded on your privacy?) The gov't has already spent a ton of money on this. It's not going to spend more to send some other kind of form to guide you through this last step. There is a lot of official census bureau info you could check, if you can spare that 10 minutes to do the research. You've crossed the line from cautious to paranoid. Not everybody is out to get you. This posting makes me livid.

Sherrmann, I certainly hope your remark was in jest. We sent ours in the same day we got it. I agree, the Census could have been handled more efficiently, but to read more into it than it is, like Michelle Backmann, from here in Mn, is paranoid. JMO Dottie

I sent my in late, if they come to my door and I don't know who they are I never answer it anyway. So, what are they going to do then?

I mailed mine back the next day and so far, no one has knocked on my door! But, if they do..I won't go to the door if I don't know who it is. Same with answering the phone!*S*

My sister mailed hers and they came to knock on her door last week. She was outside, so they didn't have to actually knock! lol They were wanting information on a house around the corner from her!

I've already told them all they need to know about MY household..but won't tell them anything about my neighbors!*S*

Hundreds of snow birds and full time RV'ers are notgetting counted because the PO refuses to forward the forms due to restrictions on the census forms that state they cannot be forwarded. It happened here. If someone else picks up the mail to forward, the census form is not given to the person that is authorized to forward. We have a PO box got the form left on the door knob because we were not home. Others got a visit. But we have NO in town delivery,as all the mail goes to the PO.
There are many in rural areas that have not gotten forms or received visits as in remote mountain areas also, even after they have called.
A couple of people did mail the forms in and the census workers insisited they fill out another form because they claim it had not been received. The homeowners put on the form, 2nd form, which the workers did not like.

I didn't receive one in the mail, but got it from the library and returned it. They came anyway. I only answered because I saw the group of enumerators standing outside my house and figured out who they were. I don't usually answer the door, either.

Did mine on the phone because I didn't get a form and she came knocking a few minutes ago. Didn't answer door so she left a contact note. I will contact her and let her know I've already done it.

Mailed mine late. Census guy came to the door today. Never could get an answer about what they did with the form I mailed...plenty of time to be received and recorded! Do they toss out the ones that arrive after a certain date? What a waste of postage and man-power! Did not answer questions...dog was going nuts. He will call tomorrw...I still think I will be counted twice.
