Census Workers Are Coming

I hope you filled out your census form when you received it earlier this year. I know I did. Bec ause if you didn't, a Census Worker will show up on your doorstep anytime from May 1 to July 10. I hate the expense caused by non-responders. And I resent the Census Dept sending me three letters. One to announce the form was coming, another with the form, and a third saying my form hadn't been received yet, but thanking me if I had mailed it bck recently. Heck, I mailed mine back the same day I got it-using the postage-paid enveLOpe provided. So if you didn't fill Your out, shame on you!

I mailed my form in and they still came knocking on my door. What a waste of tax money.

The questions on the form asked about who was living at the residence on April 1st even though they mailed the forms out weeks earlier causing some respondents to wait until after April 1st in order to answer correctly. Apparently they did not enter the info into their records and now are sending workers out to visit the later responders.

By our own choice we get our mail delivered at the post office, not @ our home. When we did not receive a census form I asked the Post Master about it. He informed me that in our situation the P.O. was required to return the census form rather than put it in our mailbox. Thus, we will have to have a census worker come to our home to complete the form. He said that it seems that this is a more expensive way of doing things, but perhaps the Census Bureau had very valid reasons for doing so.

I am hoping they can catch us @ home... I will be glad to complete the form!

Guys, thats how you start with 1 or 2 feeders and as you draw more and more hummers to your place you will add feeders and therefore get even more hummers. Also you add the right flowers, the ones that produce nectar not all flowers produce nectar even thou they will be attracted to almost anything red you will want the flowers they will come to again and again and that is how the addiction will grow. If you really love this hobby continue with it and dont worry what others say and just maybe you will convert some of them. By the way, I have 9 feeders in my front yard and one large feeder in the back and next year I will be adding more feeder and flowers even thou I have just a small lot.

Thanks for all of the kind words about my volunteer work with Ancestry.com. I do it because I love it, and it's my way of sort of "paying back" (or is it "paying it forward") all the folks who entered all of the information that I've gotten from the site. By the way, you don't have to be a "volunteer data entry person" or an arbitrator to submit corrections when you see mistakes (yes, mistakes do get through - the system isn't perfect). When you're looking at the information, there is a box on the upper part of the left side of the screen, and one of the links within that box is to submit alternate information. When you submit it, you generally have a choice (drop-down menu choices) to indicate whether there was an error in transcription, or if the information on the image is incorrect, or if it's simply alternate information - like a nickname or a maiden name for a woman who is shown under her married name, etc. Those submissions are then reviewed by "CCC Reviewers" who decide whether to accept the submission or leave the index the way it was. Yes, I'm also a CCC Reviewer for Ancestry.com. :-) When I say that the system isn't perfect, here's an example of what I mean... I was doing an arbitration review the other day of some pages from Ohio. As I've said previously, if both folks who key in the information have keyed in the exact same thing, it automatically passes. The arbitrator steps in when there is a discrepancy between the two entries. So, the pages I was reviewing were all in the same "set." A set can have a variety of number of pages, depending on what you're entering/reviewing. Even if there aren't any discrepancies on a page, it still goes to the arbitrator as part of the set. Well, on this one particular page there weren't any discrepancies indicated, but I was still looking at the typed entries and comparing them to the handwritten information on the image. I came to an entry where the given name of the head of household had been typed by both keyers as "Elizah." Well, that's how the name is pronounced, but I've personally never seen it written that way. That's not to say that no one has ever spelled it that way -- it's just that I've not seen it. So, I looked at the image, and the handwriting very clearly showed it as "Elijah." So, it's a transcription error. But because both keyers had entered it with the same exact error, there was no way for me to correct it. I'll wait until the index for those pages are online, then I'll submit alternate information, showing that it was a transcription error. :-)

I tlooks like Cynic has got it covered. But remember that the contact info is for those who do not receive their form by April 12, 2010. Some areas may be behind. Don't start calling them unless it is beyond the end date or you have reason to believe that you KNOW something went awry with yours (Did all the neighbors get one already?) It's the GOVERNMENT, people-- the government BUREAUCRACY. You're not really supposed to be able to decipher it! Just think about when you filed your tax forms this year--how long did it take you to understand some of the new rules? (And I'm not talking to the people who took it to H&R Block). Really, some of you are acting ridiculous. What do you think "verify" means? Have you never had to verify your name and address when contacting a utility company or your credit card company? You've all been reading too many scare stories about identity theft. Nobody is going to steal your identity and open up 100 credit-card accounts on the basic info that the census people are supposed to ask you. And if you should happen to get that caller who is really a scam artist and asks you for your bank account number, then you hang up. But just do your civic duty--help the census work! Help tell the government where they need to put funding for your state! I don't get some of you: You filled out a form and perhaps talked to someone at the front door, but you won't take 10 minutes to complete the process? And, from Lowspark's example, these are the questions that make you think it's some con man, or that this is so intrusive and a waste of your valuable 10 or 20 minutes? Really, I think the Oprah show and even this chat board can wait a few minutes. This sort of questioning is suspicious? Did you fill out the form correctly? What is your name? Did you fill out the form? What is your address? My god! I can go to the reverse-directory at my library and get this info in 10 seconds! And anybody wanting to plan to burglarize your home and wondering if you live alone can just sit on your block for a couple of hours and figure that out. Are you also peeking out your curtains to make sure this isn't happening? There are some bad apples in every bunch, but pls, use your intellect. (And when you take a trip on a plane, when the check-in clerk asks you if you packed your bag yourself, does that make you feel as if they've intruded on your privacy?) The gov't has already spent a ton of money on this. It's not going to spend more to send some other kind of form to guide you through this last step. There is a lot of official census bureau info you could check, if you can spare that 10 minutes to do the research. You've crossed the line from cautious to paranoid. Not everybody is out to get you. This posting makes me livid.

Sherrmann, I certainly hope your remark was in jest. We sent ours in the same day we got it. I agree, the Census could have been handled more efficiently, but to read more into it than it is, like Michelle Backmann, from here in Mn, is paranoid. JMO Dottie

I sent my in late, if they come to my door and I don't know who they are I never answer it anyway. So, what are they going to do then?

I mailed mine back the next day and so far, no one has knocked on my door! But, if they do..I won't go to the door if I don't know who it is. Same with answering the phone!*S*

My sister mailed hers and they came to knock on her door last week. She was outside, so they didn't have to actually knock! lol They were wanting information on a house around the corner from her!

I've already told them all they need to know about MY household..but won't tell them anything about my neighbors!*S*

Hundreds of snow birds and full time RV'ers are notgetting counted because the PO refuses to forward the forms due to restrictions on the census forms that state they cannot be forwarded. It happened here. If someone else picks up the mail to forward, the census form is not given to the person that is authorized to forward. We have a PO box got the form left on the door knob because we were not home. Others got a visit. But we have NO in town delivery,as all the mail goes to the PO.
There are many in rural areas that have not gotten forms or received visits as in remote mountain areas also, even after they have called.
A couple of people did mail the forms in and the census workers insisited they fill out another form because they claim it had not been received. The homeowners put on the form, 2nd form, which the workers did not like.

I didn't receive one in the mail, but got it from the library and returned it. They came anyway. I only answered because I saw the group of enumerators standing outside my house and figured out who they were. I don't usually answer the door, either.

Did mine on the phone because I didn't get a form and she came knocking a few minutes ago. Didn't answer door so she left a contact note. I will contact her and let her know I've already done it.

Mailed mine late. Census guy came to the door today. Never could get an answer about what they did with the form I mailed...plenty of time to be received and recorded! Do they toss out the ones that arrive after a certain date? What a waste of postage and man-power! Did not answer questions...dog was going nuts. He will call tomorrw...I still think I will be counted twice.
