I searched & searched - found one on Ebay that I liked but was not the right dimensions - I contacted the seller & they did a custom one which arrived less than 2 wks after ordering - pricing was far less than any I found locally too.

Like you said it's difficult to find backsplashes that are not roosters, fruit or wine. They're quite adorable but not right for everyone's home.
I wanted a backsplash with mountains or apple groves to reflect the area I live in. It worked well because I found an artist that does wildland paintings and they did the backsplash for me which also opened a new form of revenue for them. It has special meaning for my home since the orchard he painted...during an especially heavy snowy winter.... is an orchard next door to us. Like adorable roosters and wine it's not for everyone. I call the backsplash my "dead trees" but I love it and see myself loving it for years and years to come. The only thing I dislike about it is we had to work around a pot filler faucet the idiot plumber installed in the middle of the the area without asking me!!! So we tried to make it less noticeable but you can still see it in the center of the backsplash. Oh well.....
The thing is...if you find art you really like for one reason or another, check with the artist and see if they will allow you to use their work to create a backsplash that really has special meaning for you.

Here's mine. We just finished our total kitchen reno in November. We used a real cast iron fireback for ours.

Lynn......ADORE your kitchen. What a great idea...how is it attached to the tile, though?

Here is ours:

I used graph paper to design ours and sat with our tile installer while he laid in out to make sure it was done just the way I envisioned it to be.

At one point, jejvtr's was my inspiration, then I choose a busy granite so went for a more understated look pairing white bronze tiles with tumbled botticino 4x4's and a chair rail frame.

Lynne, I love yours. If I'd seen yours before, I may have opted for one like that.

Some really nice looking backsplash ideas

Mine is still a work in progress, a mosaic, it is farther along than in this photo! there will be about four panels this length, and it will go around 2 walls. The cooktop is on a peninsula, which is why I think I can get away with smalti tile (no grout in the mosaic section)

Gracie, no they're not warming drawers. The top drawer is very shallow and holds my wooden cooking utensils, rubber spatulas, hot pads, etc. The other two drawers hold my pots & pans.
Declansmom: first my GC put up a thin wood backer board, as the wall is adobe brick underneath. Then he and my tile guy attached the fireback to the board with a heavy-duty (tile?) adhesive. They immediately tapped in some long, thin finishing nails right under it to help support the fireback while the adhesive cured. The nails had very small heads and were in far enough so that they could grout right over them later. Next they added the tumbled marble tiles with tile adhesive, starting from the fireback and working out from there. After a couple days, they grouted everything. BTW, I had my painter put several coats of sealer on the fireback before we started, as without it, the fireback would absorb oils, etc.
Greenthumbfish: yes, that's it, although I got mine through another online store for $20 more. That's a good price there!

Lynn I love the fireback. I considered doing that but the weight scared me and after building the whole house I didn't have the energy left to convince DH and the builder it was a wonderful idea! I did get the fireback for my fireplace though! Here's my backsplash.

Thanks everyone for the nice compliments on my kitchen. I have to agree with everyone though....Bree is prettier and she's a lot more fun to play with too! She a golden but because I exercise her every day she's not chunky like most golden's. In fact a lot of people think she's an irish setter! Go figure!!!

Mistybear11 my cabinets are alder and stained to match the knots in our white oak flooring. Also I guess to match Bree since she seems to disappear in that color scheme. Haha.

Behind our cooktop is a simple lighted niche. Turned out to be the most troublesome part of our kitchen remodel! But ... I love it!

Yea she does blend well doesn't she? That's why I vacume so often, I can't see her hair on the wood but am amazed whenever I empty the central vac how much has accumulated. Goldens are infamous for shedding, I guess that's why God made them so loveable.

As for the carousel....well, DH bought that for me about 18 years ago. It doesn't really fit my decor in this new home but it's one of the few things I couldn't part with when we moved. So, I call my decorating style
"eccletic-hacienda-lodge-country with a tad of western thrown in for good measure"!
