winter cover necessary?

Hello all. I have been reading this forum for a few months now as I prepare to have a pool built - vinyl in-ground, 15x27 kidney, SWG. I was recently talking with a friend who also owns a vinyl in-ground pool and he says he never closes his pool in the winter, nor covers it. We are in TN, so we do get fairly cold winters with several nights of freezing temps. He says he lets his pump run from 7 pm until 7am during the winter and that's it. It's also a SWG and apparently automatically turns on the pump if temps go above 60 or 65, which occasionnally they will; therefore, no algae problem. The discussion came about as I was explaining the expense to the winter safety cover my PB had recommended. Does this make sense to anyone? This is the first I've heard of anyone in this area doing this. Thanks so much for your help!
