A hex has been placed on four slabs of granite/marble

We spent several hours at the yard today moving granite and marble around (they don't normally have to do this because not everyone is TKO in Alaska apparently) but the owner saw a sale in his bright little eyes so he got the fork lift/crane thing and drug three guys out...and the moves began. We found, payed for, marked up, and hexed these slabs so that they would be OURS (LOL ok I'm paranoid):

The bathroom is boring, but I'm thinking of taking it right up to the upper cabinets..the room is dominated by the tub and shower which are done in crocodile tile in chocolate so the counters needed to be discrete but fabulous...it's Crema Marfil Select (3cm marble in a coffe color):

And my son's bathroom (if he ever moves to his room...he's 2) is in a granite that they call Aquarella...but I see it on the net as Black Mosaic:

Now if I can just find nordic black antique to frame my silly chickens I'm in heaven :)

Your new stone is gorgeous! I've been following your threads & am so glad you found some nice replacement stone. Crema marfil won't be boring it will be a great compliment to those croc tiles. I've been drooling over the black mosaico myself & that Thunder Wave - Wow! You are going to have one fab kitchen!

I know this thread is old but I'm just now getting back to considering the shower (in our total inside out top to bottom reno, tooooo much going on.) So during this reno I've come to believe the plumber my contractor is using isn't the brightest bulb. I've met him, he's a really nice guy, but I get the impression he's been doing this for ever and ever and he's not really kept up with the times, if you know what I mean. First of all, I should say he knew my house well since he was the plumber for the previous owner for 15 years. This is a total gut so he got to totally redo the plumbing (which was previously a hodge-podge of 150 years of plumbing technology.) When determining the size for our new gas boiler, he didn't really do any calculations. Basically he looked at the old oil furnace and picked the equivalent - even though he knew that the house was WAY too hot with it running, since I'd called him over about it previously. Well it turned out that the furnace was twice as powerful as needed for our little 1200 sq ft house - no wonder it was so hot. Maybe 20 years ago when it was installed in the house, which at the time was not insulated, that made sense. But not now, with new insulation, weatherstripped/stormed windows. When my husband questioned him on this, his reply was "this is how I've done it for 30 years" or whatever. I guess by that he meant not bothering to check if what was there was too big and just picking the equivalent? So the new Burnham Freedom CM boiler arrives, there is a huge delay in firing it up b/c it was missing a coil, but that took a week for the plumber to identify. When I asked why it took so long for him to get to the point where he'd noticed, I was told by my contractor that I "had to understand that this boiler is very complicated." When our electrician, who is our cousin and also used to be a plumber, wired it to the panel he didn't think it was all that complicated. Is it? Cousin also questioned the methods he was using to set it up (I'm sorry I don't remember the details but it had to do with 1 of 2 ways of doing it, and this guy was apparently doing to do BOTH.) Now this shower pan thing. I honestly feel like I've called out this guy to my contractor so many times I'm not sure how to approach it without being insulting. (Or for the plumber not to be insulted when he hears what I want as relayed by our contractor.) sorry that was a long rant, basically. But any tips on how to handle the shower pan tactfully would be appreciated - and also exactly what I should be asking for.

Mesh markings on new honed marble hex tile

I'm writing this for any future issues with this mesh. Mineral spirits can leave an oil on the honed marble. I had the same problem with mesh markings. My marble (countertop) installer said to use Lacquer Thinner instead. They clean honed slabs all the time with lacquer thinner. This did take most of the mesh markings off my honed tile. I then took #0000 steel wool and worked on any remaining markings. Even this fine steel wool can hone the marble just slightly more, but honestly I can't tell between those where I used steel wool and those where I didn't. You might just experiment. So far I haven't seen where the lacquer thinner has dulled or lightened the marble tile, but my countertop installer said I could use an enhanced penetrating sealer versus just a plain sealer when we seal the tile. The enhanced sealer will darken the tile (but won't change the finish from honed to polished) so experiment first.

I posted the question earlier about sealing or not sealing some granites. I mentioned that the Black Pearl in our bathroom was not sealed but it has worn well. However, the other day DH pointed out that there are some dull spots in couple spots close to the edge of his sink----one of them near the soap dispenser. I've cleaned with alcohol and water, but as soon as it is buffed dry you can see and feel that it is dull. I wouldn't say it's rough, as it's smooth, but it's just dull. They did not seal the granite when it was installed, but for our bathroom we bought a pre-fab counter to save money. Could it be that it was pre-sealed somehow? Any ideas what to do about the dull patches? I am particularly concerned because we are supposed to have Black Pearl installed in our kitchen. We just went and looked at the slabs the other day. Now I don't know what to do---seal or don't seal? Also the fabricators offer a fifteen-year sealer. If I'm going to have it sealed, I think I'd like the fifteen-year sealer, because I worry about resealing and putting on another coat of sealer that isn't compatible with the first sealer. Another reason is that I have very bad asthma/reactive airway and have to be sure to be gone when the sealer is applied. The fewer times we need to do that the better. Nevertheless, I also wonder what makes one sealer good for a year or two and another for fifteen? Is there really something better about the fifteen-year sealer, or is it just hype? I've been waiting and saving for years to get new countertops in my kitchen, and I'd like to get it right the first time.

Renee you must be overwhelmed with all of these comments. Your countertops are GORGEOUS, so I do hope you keep them. Sophie's suggestion to stain the floors is well worth looking into. For what it is worth my suggestion for your backsplash is to go with a simple solid tile in a lighter color that coordinates with the countertop. I would suggest you not go too small with the tile- 3x6 to 4x12 would be a good size to stick with. You want to avoid too much movement in the backsplash as the counter (and the floor) have quite a bit of movement and you do not want them competing. Let the countertop be the star of the show. Good luck and let us know how it all ends up for you.

So,

They just had all these slabs that you wanted 'hanging around'? Or did they order them in for you?

Looks like it's all coming together! When is the projected date of completion and when are you moving in?

Great slabs. I love the movement in that Thunderwave. Your sons slab is so cool, I can't wait to see everything finished.

I am glad you have this part behind you. Just to be sure they don't sell yours slabs again, I think you should go pick them up and store it in your closet until it is cut. :) :) :) (kidding of course)

Ooh, I am glad you have found something. I am dying to see this coming together. Any chance you can post more bathroom pix on the bathroom forum? I would love to see pix along the way. Seems like people on that forum aren't TBO like people here are TKO. I love to see pix to get ideas!!! I don't know what croc tiles are.

I love Crema Marfil and plan to use it in my new master bath.

Beautiful-igloochic! I am so glad you found all of these! I think the granite for son's bathroom has great interest for him! The Thunder Wave is really amazing-and croc tiles are SO WONDERFUl the marble will be perfect to not distract from them! Congrats!!!

Happy, Happy, Happy for you. It has been a stressful time for you, Hope all is coming together, not only for the house (kitchen in particular), but also for your son's health issue. Your granite is fabulous. I have great ENVY for your choice, since mine is just plain vanilla and was bought on a whim and cheap!!!! But I will just have to put my POP in other elements. I can't wait to see pics of the finished Kit..... I know it will be AWESOME!!!

WOO HOO! Congratulations!

Your kitchen granite looks just like it's supposed to, and will be perfect with your wonderful tiles and over-the-top accents.

And the Crema Marfil's the perfect subtle backdrop for those CrocoTiles.

And I LOVE your son's granite! Down here we call it Black Marinace (among other names) and I was hoping to use it in one of our baths, though it may no longer be right with the accent tile I picked... (Not the one we're obsessing over on the Baths side.)

But Congratulations! I bet the Bozo who sold your other slabs will be more than happy to have such an easy out...

Just to be clear...we didn't buy these from the original guy who sold our slabs :) This is the oldest place in Alaska and they sell retail and to bozo's like my first guy (although apparently he stiffed them and can't buy there LOL). But they knew my story and they were happy to assist in placing the hex and making sure these exact slabs were mine (I worked with the owners on the purchase to be SURE!) THey know I'm filing charges on bozo so they probably would take extra care if they weren't as reputable as they are LOL

In my son's bath/shower, those tiles are a mix of Nordic Black in an Antiqued finish cut to 4x4 squares and Roman - Yellow Corn Travertine. The travertine is what the other freaks sold so I don't have enough to do either of our floors and had to fill in with a lesser tile. To my eyes, I can see a difference...others can't unless I point out the difference. His bathroom will also have a baseboard trim of the Nordic black, and his cabinet is sort of tan, so it's all black and tan, than antique golf posters made into wallpaper.

I'll post more pics in the bath forum for TBO's LOL

But for those who don't know what croc tile is. This is my shower in progress. That white gap is now filled with two shelfs and croc as well. It's been grouted and is now one big leather looking wall (it's a ceramic tile):

igloo - you've got my drooling w/ the croc tile - we've got two major baths to redo and I'm beginning to think "knowing" you is going to get very expensive for me!! BTW, I posted a couple of pics in Baths re: your marble question...

WOWWWEEEEE!!! Gorgeous stones...I love, love, love the last one especially. If I saw that one, I would have bought it for my kitchen.

Hope all goes well this time...I know your granite saga has been a royal pain in the arse.

Okay, Igloo, I have to tell you this . . . I, too, love blue, and have been following your saga with great interest (and sympathy!). We're nearing the end of our packing to move from northern Indiana to Tennessee -- DH leaves Sunday and I'll leave the following Friday. Our office staff had a "bye-bye" lunch for us today and I was bemoaning the fact that my computer leaves on the truck Sunday and I'll be off-line for almost a week. "What's the big deal?" they asked. I said, "Well, I won't know what's happening with a woman in Alaska and her granite!" I thought they'd die laughing at me . . . but we know how important this is, don't we!

Oooh, love that Thunder Wave:) I had a sudden flashback to an ice cream I used to eat when I was a kid, called Tiger Eye.

Mmmm what is it about countertops that evoke such food images in me?! Someone posted her marble counters today and I thought about butterscotch and was drooling...;)

GORGEOUS!!!!! A pox and a plague on anyone who tries to take those slabs away from you!

FYI, DH and I spent the day at this great artsy town about 1 1/2 hrs from us, and I made DH take some pics in the one of the shops for you and kk (kitchenkelly). You'll have to wait 'til he loads them onto the computer so I can post 'em for ya! :-)

hostagrams - you're not the only one. I've been offline for a few days dealing with some non-kitchen remodeling issues (long, messy story that'd take too long to tell) and one of the first things I did when I came back was to look and see what the progress was.

igloochic - You've got some wonderful slabs there. That marble is not boring at all. It's very sensual looking.

Congrats on finding some good replacements.

Wow, that's some fancy slab material for a 2 year olds bathroom, but...then again, I have certain plans for my sons bathroom too...

LOL Ya'll are funny. I'm glad we were able to get our granite in order before computers were shipped and vacations began :oP

We actually had that rush as well on our minds. We are heading to Seattle on Monday to (hopefully) finally get a diagnosis for our 2 year old's condition. We wanted to leave town with everything in place to finish the job, just in case I end up not getting to come home again (only necessary if we get the really bad diagnosis, SCID-boy in a bubble disease, so please keep your fingers crossed for us). At least as we head out, we now know that all of our contractors can finish their work and we'll be able to come home to an almost finished home (I have hours and hours of venetian plastering to do myself LOL)

I'm almost ready to plan a party at the new house...but don't want to jinx myself! Before we go, I'll get to see the downstairs shower/bath finished (stall only) which it was almost today, and my lovely chickens will be on the wall in the kitchen :)

The crocs come in a black (it's not gorgeous...you lose the debth of the pattern in that color) but also in a fabulous ivory tone...almost as cool as the brown. (Walker Zanger). The ivory would be fun to use. Dang I should have used it in DS's room LOL Oh well.

igloochic, your materials are fabulous! I have never seen or heard of the croc tiles. Very cool.

on a serious note, I hope you get the news you want regarding your DS. Our Easter is this Sunday and we will be at church tomorrow evening- I will light a candle for your son and say a special prayer for him. Update us when you can! :)

You, your DH and especially your little guy will be in my thoughts next week, hoping you have a manageable DX (something they can fix) and that you'll be plastering very soon.

I just found out that the venetian plaster that I applied to the foyer in our previous house has been painted over by the relo company. They painted the entire house BEIGE. I cried and pouted for two days.

Dawn, congrats on buying your stones- again. Love the granites and the marble. I have never seen a granite like the one for your DS. It is amazing. Can't wait till your chicks come home to roost and you post pics.
But I have seen granite similar to what you chose for your kitchen- you should live in Baltimore, girl, I drive by a slab of granite like that every day on the way downtown to work!! Makes my morning! There is a new fabricator business and they have a fenced lot next to the road where they display granite slabs and remnants(I think their operation looks sketchy but it is fun to drive by and look at what is new outside!!) too funny. I was oogling that granite again this morning.
So are you gonna camp out in the granite yard? Ya'll have grizzlys up there doncha?? Don't forget your mukluks and flashlight!!

not much to say other than I LOVE the new slabs!!!

side note for igloo - I just got back from volunteering for junior high school camp so I am completely exhausted and can't take pics now etc but I got something like 30 different samples of window treatments in the mail over the last few days. LOL wish you lived closer so you could come examine them in person. I am all excited about them but anyone else, even my DW, think that playing with window treatment samples is about the dullest thing in the world.

I don't know if I'd recommend a hex on anything, (except maybe the current administration, cough, cough), but a nice spell to bind the slabs to you would work well.
